This study aimed to evaluate the marginal microleakage of Class V cavities of All-bond 2 (Wet - bonding system), Gluma (Adhesion of resin to exposed collagen fibers), and Scotchbond Multi-purpose(Mild Etching System). Hundred extracted human teeth divided into a control and three experimental groups consisting of eight teeth. The experimental group was further subdivided into All- bond2, Gluma and Scotchbond MP groups, Vitrebond served as the control. The positive control group consisted of specimens filled with resin and with no etching, primer and bonding procesure. Polished specimens underwent temperature changed from $5^{\circ}C$ to $55^{\circ}C$ a thousand times. After thermocycling, speciemens were placed in 2 % methylene blue dye solution for 24 hours in an incubator set at $37^{\circ}C$. The teeth were sectioned buccolingually and the degree of dye penetration was observed with a stereomicroscoped(*20). The following results were obtained. 1. Both the control and the experimental group showed a lower degree of dye penetration on enamel than on dentin margins(p<0.05) 2. Gluma exhibited a statistically significant lower degree of dye penetration than All-bond 2 on enamel margins(p<0.05) Scotchbond MP also exhibited a lower degree of dye penetration than All-bone 2 but was no statistically significant. Gluma and Scotchbond MP exhibited a similar degree of dye penetration. 3. The degree of dye penetration of All-bond 2, Gluma and Scotch bond MP showed no statistically singnificance on enamel margins but was significantly lower than in the control using Vitrebond. 4. All-bond 2 exhibited a statistically significant lower degree of dye penetration than Gluma on dentin margins. All- bond 2 and Scotchbond MP showed a similar degree of dye penetration. 5. The degree of dye penetration of All-bond 2, Gluma and Scotchbond MP showed no statistically significance on dentin margins. There was neither a statistical significance with the control.
PURPOSE. Considering the importance of retention in the success and long-term clinical service of fixed partial dentures (FPDs) as well as the existing controversy regarding the effect of GLUMA desensitizer on the retention of full metal crowns cemented with RelyX U200 self-adhesive cement, this study aimed to assess the effect of GLUMA desensitizer on the retention of full metal crowns cemented using RelyX U200. MATERIALS AND METHODS. In this experimental study, 20 sound human premolars were prepared; a 0.5 mm chamfer finish line was prepared above the cementoenamel junction. The teeth were randomly assigned to two groups: a desensitizer group (n = 10, treated with GLUMA desensitizer) and a control (n = 10, no surface treatment). Full metal crowns were fabricated of base metal alloy and had a ring. All crowns were cemented with RelyX U200 and subjected to retention test by using a universal testing machine. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 20 and independent t-test. RESULTS. The mean tensile bond strength was significantly higher in the GLUMA desensitizer group ($230.63{\pm}63.8N$) compared to the control group ($164.45{\pm}39.3N$) ($P{\leq}.012$). CONCLUSION. GLUMA desensitizer increases the tensile bond strength of RelyX U200 self-adhesive cement to dentin.
Purpose: In this study, the effect of calcium sodium phosphosilicate (NovaMin) desensitizing agent, which is a powder-based system, and hydroxyethyl methacrylate and glutaraldehyde (Gluma desensitizer), which is liquid-based system, on dentinal tubule occlusion was analyzed by scanning electron microscope. The effects of the above two along with one control group were compared to determine the more effective method of sealing the dentinal tubules after initial application. Methods: Twenty specimens were allocated to each of 3 groups: Control, Gluma desensitizer, and NovaMin. Two additional samples were also prepared and treated with Gluma and NovaMin; these samples were longitudinally fractured. The specimens were prepared from extracted sound human premolars and were stored in 10% formalin at room temperature. The teeth were cleaned of gross debris and then sectioned to provide one to two dentin specimens. The dentin specimens were etched with 6% citric acid for 2 minutes and rinsed in distilled water. Control discs were dried, and the test discs were treated with the desensitizing agents as per the manufacturer's instructions. The discs as well as longitudinal sections were later analyzed under the scanning electron microscope. The proportions of completely occluded, partially occluded, and open tubules within each group were calculated. The ratios of completely and partially occluded tubules to the total tubules for all the groups was determined, and the data was statistically analyzed using nonparametric tests and statistical significance was calculated. Results: NovaMin showed more completely occluded tubules ($0.545{\pm}0.051$) while Gluma desensitizer showed more partially occluded tubules ($0.532{\pm}0.075$). The differences among all the groups were statistically significant ($P{\leq}0.05$). Conclusion: Both materials were effective in occluding dentinal tubules but NovaMin appeared more promising in occluding tubules completely after initial application.
The purpose of this study was to observe the resin infiltration pattern into dentin by various dentin bonding agents. Freshley extracted 36 sound human molars were used in this study. They were stored at $4^{\circ}C$ physiologic saline solution before experiment. All the teeth were cross-sectioned to expose dentin below about 3.0mm at the cusp tip and above 2.0mm at the cemento-enamel junction with Crystal Cutter (MC411 D, Maruto Co., Japan), and were made into specimens for this study (Fig. 1). The specimen experimental groups were divided into 9 groups by dentin surface treatment as following procedures: Group I: Treated with Gluma Cleanser followed by Gluma Primer and Sealer Group 2. Treated with Gluma Cleanser followed by Scotch bond 2 Adhesive Group 3: Treated with Gluma Cleanser followed by Tenure Solution A, Band Visar Seal Group 4: Treated with Scotchprep followed by Scotch bond 2 Adhesive Group 5: Treated with Scotchprep followed by Gluma Primer and Sealer Group 6: Treated with Scotch prep followed by Tenure Solution A, Band Visar Seal Group 7: Treated with Tenure Conditioner followed by Tenure Solution A, Band Visar Seal Group 8: Treated with Tenure Conditioner followed by Scotchbond 2 Adhesive Group 9: Treated with Tenure Conditioner followed by Gluma Primer and Sealer 27 specimens of 36 specimens were divided into 9 groups (Group 1-9), and were used for observation of resin tags. Remaining 9 specimens were divided into 3 groups (Group 1,4 and 7), and were used for observation of fractured dentin surfaces. Specimens to observe the resin tag were demineralized with 20% HCl for 14 hours, specimens to observe the fractured dentin surfaces were demineralized with 10% HCl for 3 minutes. All the specimens were gold-coated with Eiko ion coater (Eiko-engineering Co.), and observed under Scanning electron microscope (Hitachi S-2300) at 20 KV. The following results were obtained: 1. In group 1 treated with Gluma Cleanser, Gluma Primer, and Sealer, most resin tags were more than $100{\mu}m$. 2. In group 4 treated with Scotch prep and Scotchbond 2 Adhesive, most resin tags were about $10{\mu}m$. 3. In group 7 treated with Tenure conditioner, Tenure Solution A, B, and Visar Seal, most resin tags were about $10{\mu}m$ but occasionally resin tags were more than $100{\mu}m$. 4. In groups 2,3,5,6,8 and 9, the lengths of resin tags were inconsistent and the amount of resin tags were reduced.
PURPOSE. Many dentists use desensitizing agents to prevent hypersensitivity. This study compared and evaluated the effect of two desensitizing agents on the retention of cast crowns when cemented with various luting agents. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Ninety freshly extracted human molars were prepared with flat occlusal surface, 6 degree taper and approximately 4 mm axial length. The prepared specimens were divided into 3 groups and each group is further divided into 3 subgroups. Desensitizing agents used were GC Tooth Mousse and $GLUMA^{(R)}$ desensitizer. Cementing agents used were zinc phosphate, glass ionomer and resin modified glass ionomer cement. Individual crowns with loop were made from base metal alloy. Desensitizing agents were applied before cementation of crowns except for control group. Under tensional force the crowns were removed using an automated universal testing machine. Statistical analysis included one-way ANOVA followed by Turkey-Kramer post hoc test at a preset alpha of 0.05. RESULTS. Resin modified glass ionomer cement exhibited the highest retentive strength and all dentin treatments resulted in significantly different retentive values (In Kg.): GLUMA ($49.02{\pm}3.32$) > Control ($48.61{\pm}3.54$) > Tooth mousse ($48.34{\pm}2.94$). Retentive strength for glass ionomer cement were GLUMA ($41.14{\pm}2.42$) > Tooth mousse ($40.32{\pm}3.89$) > Control ($39.09{\pm}2.80$). For zinc phosphate cement the retentive strength were lowest GLUMA ($27.92{\pm}3.20$) > Control ($27.69{\pm}3.39$) > Tooth mousse ($25.27{\pm}4.60$). CONCLUSION. The use of $GLUMA^{(R)}$ desensitizer has no effect on crown retention. GC Tooth Mousse does not affect the retentive ability of glass ionomer and resin modified glass ionomer cement, but it decreases the retentive ability of zinc phosphate cement.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shearbond strength and resin-dentin interface of three different dentinal bonding systems in primary and permanent teeth. Thirty extracted human primary molars and premolars, which were non-carious and free of obvious defect, were selected for this study. All specimens were divided into six groups with two groups allocated for each of the three dentinal bonding system(All-bond 2, Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, Gluma bonding system). After completion of bonding composite to dentin using each tested dentin bonding system, bond strength measurement and histological observation were performed. The results are as follows: 1. All-bond 2 and Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, A good quality hybrid layer was identified, the morphology of which could be equated with the zone of H-E and Brown-Brenn staining. In Gluma bonding system, hybrid layer was very thin, and separated from the solid polymer. 2. All-bond 2 had the highest mean shearbond strength, followed by Scotchbond Multi-Purpose and Gluma bonding system in both primary and permanent teeth. There was no statistically significant difference between All-bond 2 and Scotchbond Multi-Purpose. Statistically significant difference could be found between Gluma bonding system and the other two groups(p<0.05). 3. The fracture patterns observed were mainly the mixture of adhesive failure and dentin dettachment pattern in All-bond 2 and Scotchbond Multi-Purpose while adhesive failure prevailed in Gluma bonding system.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of dentin bonding agents on the fibroblasts cultivated from human pulp tissue. The fibroblasts were cultured in DMEM/10%FBS medium. Whatman filter paper discs (6mm diameter) soaked with $2{\mu}l$ of dentin bonding agents were placed on a millipore filter (pore size $0.22{\mu}m$) contained in a 50mm Petri dish, and then, exposed for 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 6 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, 4 days and 7 days in $37.^{\circ}C$, 5% $CO_2$ incubator. The results of the experiments were analyzed by counting the cells and measuring the protein contents at 1 day, 4 days and 7 days. The results of this study were as follows: l. CLEARFIL NEW BOND, LITE-FIL BOND, GLUMA 3 Primer and GLUMA 4 Sealer showed cytotoxicity compared to the control group in the cell counts and the protein contents. 2. GLUMA 4 Sealer showed the least cytotoxicity among the three dentin bonding agents. 3. The results of the cell count were simialr to the results of protein content measurement. 4. LITE-FIL BOND exhibited marked cytotoxicity during 1 day, but, the cytotoxicity was slightly reduced after 4 and 7 days. 5. In GLUMA 3 Primer group, it was not possible to count the cell numbers and measure the protein contents, but the degeneration of cells was observed under the inverted phase-contrast microscope.
The purpose of this study was to observe the degree of surface obliteration of dentinal tubule using Gluma(R) desensitizer and MS coat(R) with 15 specimens made out of 15 extracted lower incisors. They were divided into Root planning group(control), Gluma(R) desensitizer group(test I ) and MS coat(R) group(test II). Degree of Obliteration was examined under the scanning electron microscope(${\times}$2000). The following results were obtained: 1. In the root planning group(control), the complete open of dentinal tubule surface was accounted for 73.8%, the partial obliteration for 17.2% and the complete obliteration for 9.0%. 2. In the Gluma(R) desensitizer group (test I), the complete open of dentinal tubule surface was accounted for 23.6%, the partial obliteration for 42.8% and the complete obliteration for 33.6%. 3. In the MS coat(R) group (test II), the complete open of dentinal tubule surface was accounted for 19.2%, the partial obliteration for 45.6% and the complete obliteration for 35.2%. 4. The average number of open dentinal tubules in the control was significantly higher than in the test I and II (P<0.05), but there were no statistically significant differences between the test I and II. 5. The average number of the partially obliterated and the completely blocked dentinal tubules in the control was significantly lower than the test I and II(P<0.05), but there were no statistically significant differences between the test I and II. The results of this study suggest that Gluma(R) desensitizer and MS coat(R) is significantly effective on dentinal tubule obliteration, therefore they were effective on hypersensitivity caused by periodontal treatment
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of dentin adhesives(Gluma$^{(R)}$ and Scotchbond 2$^{(R)}$) on the marginal adaptation of light cured composite resin (Heliosit$^{(R)}$) by using SEM. The recently extracted 30 teeth were used and round cavities were prepared on the occlusal surfaces of the teeth with predesigned depth and diameter. The teeth were divided into three groups. Group 1 : Gluma$^{(R)}$ + Heliosit$^{(R)}$ Group 2 : Scotchbond 2$^{(R)}$ + Heliosit$^{(R)}$ Group 3 : Enamelbond$^{(R)}$ + Heliosit$^{(R)}$ Filling with Heliosit, the teeth were stored in saline solution for 24 hours. After the thermocycling procedure, the teeth were cut vertically into the restorations. The SEM observation was carried out to evaluate the marginal adaptation of the composite resin. The following results were obtained. The following results were obtained. 1. The groups using Gluma$^{(R)}$ and Scotchbond 2$^{(R)}$ showed better than the control group on marginal adaptation to the dentin. 2. The group using Gluma$^{(R)}$ was superior to the group using Scotchbond 2$^{(R)}$, but the difference was not significant. 3. In all groups, the marginal gaps were wider on the pulpal walls than on the lateral walls of restorations.
Objectives: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the bond strength of 2 universal adhesives used in different application modes to bleached enamel. Materials and Methods: Extracted 160 sound human incisors were used for the study. Teeth were divided into 4 treatment groups: No treatment, 35% hydrogen peroxide, 16% carbamid peroxide, 7.5% carbamid peroxide. After bleaching treatments, groups were divided into subgroups according to the adhesive systems used and application modes (n = 10): 1) Single Bond Universal, etch and rinse mode; 2) Single Bond Universal, self-etch mode; 3) Gluma Universal, etch and rinse mode; 4) Gluma Universal, self-etch mode. After adhesive procedures nanohybrid composite resin cylinders were bonded to the enamel surfaces. All specimens were subjected to shear bond strength (SBS) test after thermocycling. Data were analyzed using a 3-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey post hoc test. Results: No significant difference were found among bleaching groups (35% hydrogen peroxide, 16% carbamid peroxide, 7.5% carbamid peroxide, and no treatment groups) in the mean SBS values. There was also no difference in SBS values between Single Bond Universal and Gluma Universal at same application modes, whereas self-etch mode showed significantly lower SBS values than etch and rinse mode (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The bonding performance of the universal adhesives was enhanced with the etch and rinse mode application to bleached enamel and non-bleached enamel.
