To investigate the characteristics of the shear wave velocity of cohesive soils and residual soils in Korea, Standard Penetration Test (SPT), Suspension PS Logging tests (SPS) and other soil tests were performed to analyze the shear wave velocity at each layer For these purposes, 2 study sites are selected: one is cohesive soils and the other is residual soils. As a results, new empirical formulas are proposed from the relationship between strength of the ground (N value) and shear wave velocity from the test data at each layer. In the case of cohesive soils, the proposed relationships are nearly similar to empirical formulas, however, in the case of residual soils there was a little difference between the empirical formulas and measured velocities in this study. Case examples for shear wave velocites are presented with depth, N-values and compared with Ohta et al. (1978) empirical formula.
Downhole seismic method is very economic and easy of operation because it uses only one borehole and simple surface source to obtain the shear wave velocity ($V_s$) profile of a site. Even though it is widely used by the site investigation companies, universities and institutes, however, the $V_s$ profile determined by downhole seismic method has often low reliability due to employment of wrong combinations of field losing equipment and interpretation method and deficiency of experience. Round robin test was performed and testing equipment and procedure were compared. Adequate downhole seismic testing equipment was constructed based on the comparison and verification study of the round robin test. The data acquisition and software interpretation were also developed for automation and quick test in field. Finally, the effectiveness and applicability were verified through the field test by using the constructed testing system.
Electromagnetic(EM) survey has been in use for over a half century as a standard routine for, mineral exploration in many parts of the world. But EM survey work and serious research effort were initiated in Korea only as late as in early 1980s, largely inspired by four pioneers who did their graduate studies in the U.S.A. in 1970s. Nevertheless domestic achievements in the field of EM survey are remarkable in the last two decades: the field operations and related interpretational skills appear to have reached a global standard, even compared with the most advanced in other countries, virtually in a whole spectrum of the method which includes magneto-tellurics(MT), Controlled Source Audio-frequency Magneto-tellurics(CSAMT), geomagnetic sounding, small loop survey systems, Very Low Frequency(VLF), Ground Penetrating Radar(GPR), time domain surveys, and noise analysis. Besides mineral exploration, EM survey has been applied in Korea to hydrogeology, geotechnical engineering, non-destructive investigation of structures, unexplored ordnance(UXO) investigation, environmental monitoring, and archaeological investigation as well. Now that original contributions of several Korean geophysicists are found even in new frontiers such as high-frequency EM survey, investigation in time-domain EM field for buried metal objects and structures, and also modem data inversion scheme, it is duly hoped that they make some technical breakthrough to unravel still entangled knots of EM survey method in a forseeable future.

A graph or topographic map can often convey larger amounts of information in a shorter time than ordinary text-based methods. To visualize information precisely it is necessary to collect all the geological information at design stage, but actually it is almost impossible to bore or explore the entire area to gather the required data. So, tunnel engineers have to rely on the judgement of expert from the limited number of the results of exploration and experiment. In this study, several programs are developed to handle the results of geological investigation with various data processing techniques. The results of the typical case study are also presented. For the electric survey, eleven points are chosen at the valley to measure the resistivity using Schlumberger array. The measured data are interpolated in 3-dimensional space by kriging and the distribution of resistivity are visualized to find weak or fractured zone. The correlation length appears to be around 5 to 20 meter in depth. Regression analyses were performed to find a correlation length. No nugget effect is assumed, and the topographic map, geologic formation, fault zone, joint geometry and the distribution of resistivity are successfully visualized by using the proposed technique.
Vibration propagated from seismic sources has damping according to distance and amplification and reduction characteristic in different regions according to topography and geological structure. The vibration propagated from the seismic source to the bedrock is largely affected by the damping according to the separation distance, which can be simply estimated through the damping equation. However, it is important to grasp geological information by location because vibration estimation transmitted to the surface are affected by the natural period of the soil located above the bedrock. Geotechnical investigation data are needed to estimate the seismic intensity based on geological information. If there is no Vs profile, the standard penetration tests are mainly used to determine the soil parameters. The Integrated DB Center of National Geotechnical Information manages the geotechnical survey data performed on the domestic ground, and there is the standard penetration test information of 400,000 holes. In this study, the possibility of quantitation the amplification coefficient for each region was examined to calculated the physical interactive seismic intensity based on geotechnical information. At this time, the shear wave column diagram was generated from the SPT-N value and ground response analysis was performed in the target area. The site coefficients for each zone and the seismic intensity distribution for the seismic motion present a significant difference according to the analysis method and the regional setting.
The internal structure of a river embankment must be delineated as part of investigations to evaluate its safety. Geophysical methods can be most effective means for that purpose, if they are used together with geotechnical methods such as the cone penetration test (CPT) and drilling. Since the dyke body and subsoil in general consist of material with a wide range of grain size, the properties and stratification of the soil must be accurately estimated to predict the mechanical stability and water infiltration in the river embankment. The strength and water content of the levee soil are also parameters required for such prediction. These parameters are usually estimated from CPT data, drilled core samples and laboratory tests. In this study we attempt to utilise geophysical data to estimate these parameters more effectively for very long river embankments. S-wave velocity and resistivity of the levee soils obtained with geophysical surveys are used to classify the soils. The classification is based on a physical soil model, called the unconsolidated sand model. Using this model, a soil profile along the river embankment is constructed from S-wave velocity and resistivity profiles. The soil profile thus obtained has been verified by geotechnical logs, which proves its usefulness for investigation of a river embankment.

The data on the pile load tests performed on 35 large drilled shafts are analyzed to investigate the load-settlement characteristics of large drilled shafts embedded in bed rocks. Generally, the settlement of large drilled shafts embedded in bed rocks is too small to determine the ultimated load with application of the regulation in design code for either the total settlement or the residual settlement. Therefore, to determine the yield load of large drilled shafts embedded in bed rocks, p(load)-logS (settlement) curve method, which has been proposed originally for the driven pile, was applied to the investigation on the data of the pile load tests. This technique shows that the yield load can be determined accurately and easily rather than other conventional techniques such as P-S, logp-logS, S-logt, and P-S curve methods. An empirical equation is proposed to represent the relationship between pile load and settlement before the yield loading condition. And the settlement of piles was related with the depth embedded in rock as well as rock properties. Based on the investigation on the data of pile load tests, the resonable regulations f3r both the total settlement and the residual settlement are proposed to determine the yield load of large drilled shafts embedded in bed rocks.
In this study, we collected data through the investigation of rock slopes of highway. By analyzing the collected data, the main factors of rock slope failure were studied. We studied on the failure types and scales according to rock types and geological structures in many rock slopes of highway. As a result, it was shown that many failed slopes were distributed in the areas of Cretaceous sedimentary rocks of south-eastern part in the Korean Peninsula and the Gneiss Complex in both Kyonggi-Do and Kangwon-Do. According to rock types, the following slope failure types were shown : that igneous rocks had the types of rock fall, plane failure, soil erosion and circular failure but had low failure frequency, and sedimentary rocks had predominantly the type of plane failure. Metamorphic rock showed the types of circular failure, wedge failure and plane failure due to poor rock qualities . According to geological structures, the following slope failure types were shown slope failure in igneous rocks was caused by joints, and in sedimentary rocks by bedding plane, and in metamorphic rocks by faults and poor rock qualities.
In this paper, the characteristics of excessive horizontal stress components in Korea were studied using more than five hundred measured data set of in-situ hydraulic fracturing test. Based on the in-situ testing data, the magnitude and orientation of the horizontal stress component and variation of stress ratio (K) with depth were investigated. And also horizontal stress magnitude versus depth relationships and distribution limits of stress ratio components were suggested. For the depth less than 310 m in the entire territory, the stress ratio has a tendency to diminish and stabilize with depth, but fur some areas, it was revealed that the excessive horizontal stress fields with stress ratio close to 3.0 below 200 m in depth have formed. The results from the investigation of excessive horizontal stress regions showed that there existed several regions where the localized excessive horizontal stress was big enough to potentially induce brittle failure around the openings at less than 300 m in depth.

The stability of structure, effectiveness of design and construction are very important factors in soil-structure design. The design-parameter is based on the test through laboratory-test and field-test. There are two ways to obtain the design-parameter. One is to through test, and the other is through relative documents and references. Recently, statistics has been used to get reliable data. In this study, Kriging method as Geostatistics and the theory of Bayesian's inference are used and the design-parameters are obtained. As the result of this study to the design-parameter is reliable and information about soil condition and soil properties in design and construction is easily found.
