  • In this paper, we have proposed 3D shape reconstruction using superquadrics and single z-buffer Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG) rendering algorithm. Superquadrics can obtain various 3D model using 11 parameters and both superquadrics and deformed-superquadrics play a role of primitives which are consisted of CSG tree. In addition, we defined some effective equations using z-buffer algorithm and stencil buffer for synthesizing 3D model. Using this proposed algorithm, we need not to consider the coordinate of each 3D model because we simply compare the depth value of 3D model.

  • This study aims to improve the teaching and learning method on the conic sections. To do that the researcher analyzed the impact of dynamic geometry software on students' problem solving of the conic sections. Students often say, "I have solved this kind of problem and remember hearing the problem solving process of it before." But they often are not able to resolve the question. Previous studies suggest that one of the reasons can be students' tendency to approach the conic sections only using algebra or analytic geometry without the geometric principle. So the researcher conducted instructions based on the geometric and historico-genetic principle on the conic sections using dynamic geometry software. The instructions were intended to find out if the experimental, intuitional, mathematic problem solving is necessary for the deductive process of solving geometric problems. To achieve the purpose of this study, the researcher video taped the instruction process and converted it to digital using the computer. What students' had said and discussed with the teacher during the classes was checked and their behavior was analyzed. That analysis was based on Branford's perspective, which included three different stage of proof; experimental, intuitive, and mathematical. The researcher got the following conclusions from this study. Firstly, students preferred their own manipulation or reconstruction to deductive mathematical explanation or proving of the problem. And they showed tendency to consider it as the mathematical truth when the problem is dealt with by their own manipulation. Secondly, the manipulation environment of dynamic geometry software help students correct their mathematical misconception, which result from their cognitive obstacles, and get correct ones. Thirdly, by using dynamic geometry software the teacher could help reduce the 'zone of proximal development' of Vigotsky.

  • Nowadays, with advanced 3D printing techniques, the custom-made implant can be manufactured for the patient. Especially in skull reconstruction, it is difficult to design the implant due to complicated geometry. In large defect, an autograft is inappropriate to cover the defect due to donor morbidity. We present the process of manufacturing the 3D custom-made implant for skull reconstruction. There was one patient with skull defect repaired using custom-made 3D titanium implant in the plastic and reconstructive surgery department. The patient had defect of the left parieto-temporal area after craniectomy due to traumatic subdural hematoma. Custom-made 3D titanium implants were manufactured by Medyssey Co., Ltd. using 3D CT data, Mimics software and an EBM (Electron Beam Melting) machine. The engineer and surgeon reviewed several different designs and simulated a mock surgery on 3D skull model. During the operation, the custom-made implant was fit to the defect properly without dead space. The operative site healed without any specific complications. In skull reconstruction, autograft has been the treatment of choice. However, it is not always available and depends on the size of defect and donor morbidity. As 3D printing technique has been advanced, it is useful to manufacture custom-made implant for skull reconstruction.

  • Computed tomography, which obtains section images from reconstruction process using projection images, has been applied to various fields. The spatial resolution of the reconstructed image depends on the device used in CT system, the object, and the reconstruction process. In this paper, we investigates the effect of the number of projection images and the pixel size of the detector on the spatial resolution of the reconstructed image under the parallel beam geometry. The reconstruction program was written in Visual C++, and the matrix size of the reconstructed image was $512{\times}512$. The numerical bar phantom was constructed and the Min-Max method was introduced to evaluate the spatial resolution on the reconstructed image. When the number of projections used in reconstruction process was small, artifact like streak appeared and Min-Max was also low. The Min-Max showed upper saturation when the number of projections is increased. If the pixel size of the detector is reduced to 50% of the pixel size of the reconstructed image, the reconstructed image was perfectly recovered as the original phantom and the Min-Max decreased as increasing the detector pixel size. This study will be useful in determining the detector and the accuracy of rotation stage needed to achieve the spatial resolution required in the CT system.

  • Inspection and shape measurement of three-dimensional objects are widely needed in industries for quality monitoring and control. A number of visual or optical technologies have been successfully applied to measure three-dimensional surfaces. However, those conventional visual or optical methods have inherent shortcomings such as occlusion and variant surface reflection. X-ray vision system can be a good solution to these conventional problems, since we can extract the volume information including both the surface geometry and the inner structure of any objects. In the x-ray system, the surface condition of an object, whether it is lambertian or specular, does not affect the inherent characteristics of its x-ray images. In this paper, we propose a three-dimensional x-ray imaging method to reconstruct a three dimensional structure of an object out of two dimensional x-ray image sets. To achieve this by the proposed method, two or more x-ray images projected from different views are needed. Once these images are acquired, the simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique(SART) is usually utilized. Since the existing SART algorithms have several shortcomings such as low performance in convergence and different convergence within the reconstruction volume of interest, an advanced SART algorithm named as USART(uniform SART) is proposed to avoid such shortcomings and improve the reconstruction performance. Because, each voxel within the volume is equally weighted to update instantaneous value of its internal density, it can achieve uniform convergence property of the reconstructed volume. The algorithm is simulated on various shapes of objects such as a pyramid, a hemisphere and a BGA model. Based on simulation results the performance of the proposed method is compared with that of the conventional SART method.

  • This paper presents a novel 3D model representation, called hybrid model representation, to overcome existing 3D volume-based indoor scene reconstruction mechanism. In indoor 3D scene reconstruction, volume-based model representation can reconstruct detailed 3D model for the narrow scene. However it cannot reconstruct large-scale indoor scene due to its memory consumption. This paper presents a memory efficient plane-hash model representation to enlarge the scalability of the indoor scene reconstruction. Also, the proposed method uses plane-hash model representation to reconstruct large, structural planar objects, and at the same time it uses volume-based model representation to recover small detailed region. Proposed method can be implemented in GPU to accelerate the computation and reconstruct the indoor scene in real-time.

In this paper, 3D measuring system is developed by using stereo vision. The relation between left image and right image is obtained by using 8 point algorithm, and fundamental matrix, epipole and 3D reconstruction algorithm are used to measure 3D dimensions. 3D measuring system was developed by Visual Basic, in which 3D coordinates would be obtained by simple mouse clicks. This software would be applied to construction area, home interior system, rapid measuring system.

  • Optical phase conjugate mechanism and edge enhancement by degenerate four wave mixing (DFWM) in photorefractive material are described, and image reconstruction is perfromed sucessfully in BaTiO3 single crystal. Also, the edge enhancement is carried out in the crystal by the same DFWM geometry. But the intensities of three incident beams are inverted. Good quality of edge enhancement is observed in real-time (processing time 10 sec) with low incident light intensity (5.38mW/cm\ulcorner.
