Integrated CAD/CAE System for Planing Hull Form Design (활주형 선박의 선형설계를 위한 통합 CAD/CAE 시스템)

  • In this paper a free-form hull design program and performance prediction program for planing boat is introduced. This program enables the designer to do complex geometric hull shape design on a personal computer and accurately to predict power requirements for a given loading and velocity. For a free form design, Bezier curve model is adopted as a basic representation tool of curves and surfaces, and this program has versatile functions to do fairing jobs with a convenient graphical user interface. After creating a hull form the geometric data is provided in a manner compatible with a variety of analysis tools including 'Motion Analysis(by Zarnick)' for prediction of motion characteristics in regular waves, 'Running Attitude (by Savitsky)' for prediction of the running attitude and required power.

  • Various geometric modeling techniques for a hull have been developed with wide application of computer to the ship design. Up to now, they are used for the representation of the sculptured surface with the piecewise polynominal curves or surfaces for a conventional hull. In this paper, a convenient and accurate modeling technique that is instancing and blending of the geometry primitives is introduced for a non-conventional hull such as SWATH, trimaran, caisson etc. Geometric characteristics, hydrostatic particulars and stability of the definded hull are calculated.

  • This paper presents a methodology to enable the tolerances on mating parts of an assembly to be specified and be compatible to the precision of an assembly robot so as to achieve maximum system performance. The measure of performance is defined as the Probability of Successful Assembly (PSA). A typical loose fastener assembly, usually called peg-in-a-hole is investigated. The Geometric Tolerancing System is adopted to represent position tolerances of mating parts. Two models are presented by considering modifiers on a position tolerance, Regardless of Feature Size (RFS) and Maximum Material Condition (MMC). Using these models, it is analyzed how the Standard Limits and Fits recommended by ANSI influence the performance of an assembly robot. For this analysis, the Standard Limits and Fits are transformed to the representation scheme of the Geometric Tolerancing System. Due to low PSAs when the Standard Limits and Fits are taken into account, the effect of chamfers around a hole is also analyzed.

  • In this paper, we present an interactive 3D character modeling and animation including a data management tool for editing the animation. It includes an animation editor for changing animation sequences according to the modified structure of 3D object in the object structure editor. The animation tool has the feature that it can produce motion data independently of any modeling tool including our modeling tool. Differently from conventional 3D graphics tools that model objects based on geometrically calculated data, our tool models 3D geometric and animation data by approximating to the real object using 2D image interactively. There are some applications that do not need precise representation, but an easier way to obtain an approximated model looking similar to the real object. Our tool is appropriate for such applications. This paper has focused on the data management for enhancing the automatin and convenience when editing a motion or when mapping a motion to the other character.

  • In the present study, a shape design optimization scheme in shell structures is implemented based on the integrated framework of geometric modeling and analysis. The common representation of B-spline surface patch is used for geometric modeling. A geometrically-exact shell finite element is implemented. Control points or the surface are employed as design variables. In the computation of shape sensitivity, semi-analytical method is employed. Sequential linear programming is applied to the shape optimization of surfaces. The developed integrated framework should serve as a powerful tool to design and analysis of surfaces.

  • This paper introduces a geometric modelling system adopted in a newly developed preprocessor for finite element analysis of three dimensional structures. The formulation is characterized by hierachical construction of structural model which consists of control points, curves, surfaces and solids. Various surface and solid modelling schemes based on blending functions and boundary representation are systematized for finite element mesh generation. The modelling system is integrated with model synthesis and operations which facilitate modelling of complex structures.

  • This paper investigate the optimum thickness distribution of plate structure with different essential boundary conditions in the fundamental natural frequency maximization problem. In this study, the fundamental natural frequency is considered as the objective function to be maximized and the initial volume of structures is used as the constraint function. The computer-aided geometric design (CAGD) such as Coon's patch representation is used to represent the thickness distribution of plates. A reliable degenerated shell finite element is adopted calculate the accurate fundamental natural frequency of the plates. Robust optimization algorithms implemented in the optimizer DoT are adopted to search optimum thickness values during the optimization iteration.   • The inverse kinematics problem of a reclaimer which excavates and transports raw materials in a raw yard is investigated. Because of the geometric feature of the equipment in which scooping buckets are attached around the rotating disk, kinematic redundancy occurs in determining joint variable. Link coordinates are introduced following the Denavit-Hartenbery representation. For a given excavation point the forward kinematics yields 3 equations, however the number of involved joint variables in the equations is four. It is shown that the rotating disk at the end of the boom provides an extra passive degree of freedom. Two approaches are investigated in obtaining inverse kinematics solutions. The first method pre-assigns the height of excavation point which can be determined through path planning. A closed form solution is obtained for the first approach. The second method exploits the orthogonality between the normal vector at the excavation point and the z axis of the end-effector coordinate system. The geometry near the reclaiming point has been approximated as a plane, and the plane equation has been obtained by the least square method considering 8 adjacent points near the point. A closed form solution is not found for the second approach, however a linear approximate solution is provided.

  • This study analyzed how two sixth graders recognized, generalized, and represented functional relationships in exploring geometric growing patterns. The results showed that at first the students had a tendency to solve the given problem using the picture in it, but later attempted to generalize the functional relationships in exploring subsequent items. The students also represented the patterns with their own methods, which in turn had an impact on the process of generalizing and applying the patterns to a related context. Given these results, this paper includes issues and implications on how to foster functional thinking ability at the elementary school.

Direct Fairing for Geometric Modeling of Hull Surface (선형의 기하학적 모델링을 위한 직접순정법에 관한 연구)

  • When a geometric modeling of a hull form for ship design and hull production is done, a hull fairing is a tedious process which wastes a lot of time, but it is unavoidable because hull consist of the sculptured surfaces. This paper presents the mathematical method of the direct fairing to overcome the tediousness of cross fairing. Bi-cubic B-spline surface description was adopted for the representation of the hull surface. The fairing process was executed by minimizing the strain energy in a shell plate. The color-encoded Gaussian curvature and strain energy were visualized on the screen to illustrate the fairness of the surface. The geometric information generated from the faired hull surface model was interfaced with the basic design calculation package and the hull production system.
