  • Wide tunnels, such as those with high filling, can suffer limited applicability and also reduced structural stability. Therefore, to improve these limitations of precast cut-and-cover tunnel segments, this study proposes rib reinforcement of the vaults of the precast segments. Large-sized experiments assess the effectiveness of the various rib-reinforced precast arch cut-and-cover tunnel structures, and compare them against otherwise similar non-rib-reinforced specimens. The results show that the rib-reinforced precast cut-and-cover segments are suitable for building wide tunnels with high filling.

  • Cast-in-place concrete lining is commonly used in tunnel lining, but cast-in-place concrete lining has problems with construction and quality control. Precast segment lining is being used to solve these problems. In general, precast segment lining is known to have improved durability and easy maintenance such as rehabilitation of structures. This study compared the durability of 22 tunnel linings constructed with precast segments or cast-in-place reinforced concrete.

  • In this study, we carried out a survey on the degree of recognition for the brand of the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) to contribute to reestablishing the status and role of KIGAM as an institution that people proud of by effectively delivering KIGAM's various research activities and achievements to people. About 49.9% of external publics recognized that there was relevance between research achievements of geo-technology and national brand. On the contribution of research achievements of geo-technology to promoting Korea's power of science and technology, 42.3% gave positive answers. On research achievements of mineral resources technology, just 14.4% replied they saw such results. As alternatives to promote the degree of recognition for brand, we suggested development of beneficial message, operation of brand management committee, promotion of involvement of research achievements of mineral resources technology about people-friendly subjects, development and distribution of "board game for education on mineral resources technology" for youths, activation of location PR, activation of online Q&A bulletin board, finding out star researchers, and president's PI activities.

  • Underground lifelines such as water supply/sewer pipe, power cable and gas pipe are indispensable facilities to the life of urban society. These lifelines have been constructed long time ago and buried positioning information is not precisely recorded. Moreover, they have been concentrated on the narrow area and are complicatedly entangled in 3-dimension. In the fourth industrial revolution, a 3-dimensional visualization for underground lifelines is strongly required, and a database (D/B) with precise positioning information should be preceded. In this study, image processing technology for precise positioning of underground buried lifelines is introduced, which is able to build the database more accurately, efficiently and practically.

  • Pulse electrokinetic technology is proposed for improving the dewatering-process from clay-sandy soil. Proposed electrokinetic technology is to be the dewatering process due to fluid movement of current flow for the stability of clay-sandy soils. Samples produced in this study were completed to verify the proposed performance for 7 days by gradually increasing the pressure to the final pressure of 30 psi ($2.11kgf/cm^2$) through the compression process. In this study, pulse electrokinetic treatment and conventional continuous electrokinetic treatment are tested and observed, respectively. The condition of continuous electrokinetic treatment is a continuous process during 48 hours. And the condition of pulse electrokinetic treatment system is to interrupt the power three times for 48 hours, every 8 hours. These treatments are that the voltage gradient is 3 V/cm. As a result, the efficiency of pulse electrokinetic is similar to the continuous electrokinetic. The power consumption efficiency of pulse electrokinetic is better than continuous electrokinetic.

  • In recent years, world has witnessed many man-made activities related to both above and underground blasts. Details on behaviour of shallow foundations subjected to blast loads and induced liquefaction is scarce in literature. In this paper, typical shallow strip foundation in saturated cohesionless soils subjected to both above and underground blasting have been simulated by using finite difference based numerical model FLAC3D. Peak particle velocity (PPV) has been obtained to propose critical values for which bearing capacity failure for shallow foundations with soil liquefaction can occur. Typical results for pore pressure ratio (PPR) for various scaled distances are compared to PPR values obtained by using empirical equation available in literature which shows good agreement. Critical design values obtained in the present study for PPV and PPR to estimate the scaled distance, bearing capacity failure and liquefaction susceptibility can be used effectively for design of shallow strip foundation in cohesionless soil subjected to both above and under ground blast loads.

  • Recently remote sensing technology is applied for construction planning and design areas by use of remote sensed satellite images according to engineering application technology in the various experimental tasks. In this study, it was applied for 3 dimensional terrain analysis and basic design by comparing with present railway and newly expanded double-tract railway route of forest sites on the new construction site of 15km at national railway lines, and then showed 3-D perspective images and fly simulation images to examine possibility of various application as terrain analysis modeling and running simulation at the corresponding course. As a result of its application, it gained the results not only improvement of present methods but also real various application possibilities.

  • Recently, road subsidence has been increasing in urban areas, threatening the safety of citizens. In the lower part of the road, various road facilities such as water supply and drainage pipelines and telecommunication facilities are buried, and the deterioration of the facilities causes the road subsidence. In particular, in the case of old sewer pipes which are attracting attention as a main cause of road subsidence, the management of sewer pipe replacement, repair and reinforcement is being performed depending on the burial year. Therefore, in this study, we tried to suggest a reliable road subsidence risk assessment method considering various sewer specifications and surrounding environment information and CCTV exploration result and GPR exploration result.

  • This study was carried out to understand depositional environment and genesis of clayey soils that distributed in the Dongup area. On the basis of detailed observation and description on mineralogy, geochemical composition, geophysical properties, paleontological analysis of cored sediments, three sedimentary unit have been distinguished. From bottom to top, they are early Holocene freshwater muddy deposit(Unit I, fluvial swamp), late Holocene silt and muddy deposit(Unit II, alluvial deposit), late Holocene muddy deposit(Unit III, fluvial swamp). Unit II is divided into three part: the lower part-unweathered massive silt and muddy deposit, middle part-weathered layered slit and muddy deposit and upper part-weathered massive muddy deposit.

  • The soil loss by rainfalls or runoffs has been one of the main environment problems in 20th century. The soil loss cause the various problems those are decreasing of the agricultural productivity, desolating of pasture land and disturbing of water flowing. Therefore, it is very important to measure properly various factors those are affecting to soil loss and to recognize a seriousness of soil loss problem. In this study, we use the USLE(Universal Soil Loss Equation) as a basic approaching way for soil loss analysis in a watershed, and the GSIS(Geo-Spatial Information System) technique is applied to evaluate for factors those are related to the USLE. The results of this study are consisted of three parts those are to build up the various topographical information that is needed for analysis of wide area soil loss by using the USLE, to evaluate the factors those are needed to the USLE, to estimate the soil loss condition of subbasin in the watershed.
