Tooth Modification for Spur Gear for Articulated Hauler's Final Drive (트럭 최종감속기 평기어의 치형최적화에 관한 연구)

  • Construction equipment is heavily loaded during normal operation. In recent years, there is a trend that lower gear noise levels are demanded for drivers to avoid annoyance and fatigue during operation. For articulated hauler's final drive, meshing transmission error(T.E.) is the excitation that leads the tonal noise known as gear whine, and radiated gear whine is also the dominant source of noise in the whole gearbox. This paper presents a method for the analysis of the tooth profile modification, and the prediction of transmission error under the loaded torques for the spur gear pair of the articulated hauler's final drive. And the transmission error, transmission error harmonics and contact stress are also calculated and compared before and after tooth modification under one torque. The simulation result shows that the transmission error and contact stress under the loads can be minimized by the appropriate tooth profile modification.

  • When gears mesh, shock and noise are produced as results of tooth error and tooth deformation under load. Transmission error (TE) is the most important cause of gear noise and vibration because TEs affect the changes of the force and the speed of gears. Gear tooth modification research plays a positive role in reducing TE and improving the design level and transmission performance of transmission systems. In high-precision manufacturing gear, gear tooth modification is also commonly used to reduce noise in practical applications. In order to study the accuracy of gear transmission, some empirical gear profile micro-modifications are introduced, and a helical gear pair is modeled and analyzed in RomaxDesigner software to investigate the utility of these modification methods. Some of these will be selected as experimental proposals for gear pairs, and these manufactured gears will be tested and compared in a semi-anechoic room later. The final purpose of this study is to find reasonable and convenient empirical formulae to facilitate improved gear production.

  • In this study, the sliding wear in spur gears, using Archard's wear model, is analyzed. Formulas of tooth sliding wear depth along the line of action are derived. The tooth profile is modified Id make a smooth transmission of the normal loads and the cylinder profile for reducing the pressure spike is suggested. The sliding wear rate is calculated with these profiling results. We expect these modification methods to contribute to the reduction of sliding wear not only in the root, but the tip of tooth and tooth edge.

  • In this study, designing of precise linear transferring device which can be applied to industrial machine and robot industry has been introduced. The direction of power flow and output feature are similar to current Rack-Pinion type. However, unlimited length extensity via rack modulizing, and securing high velocity transportation have been realized by applying Pin-Pinion Gear type at the operation part. The analysis has been calculated to obtain the Pin-Pinion Gear's optimized tooth profile. As a result of research, it is impossible to control precisely even overlap at the teeth of involute and sprocket. Because they have peculiar gearing structure. Therefore, modified cycloid tooth has been proposed to perform high velocity, precise control without backlash.

  • The free curve gear is a non-circular gear without any relating center, which can perform free curve motion for complicated mechanisms, and minimize the work area. In this study, an algorithms for tooth profile generation of free curve involute gear is developed. The algorithm uses the involute gear creating principle in which a gear can be generated by rolling with another standard involute one. Cycloid me and third polynomial curve gears were designed and verified by computer graphics. These gears are manufactured in the wire-cut EDM and examined in engagement with a standard spur gear. The results showed that the proposed algorithm is successful to design and to manufacture the free curve gear with concave and convex profiles.

Sub-surface Stress Analysis on Spur Gear Teeth in the EHL Conditions

  • The sub-surface stress field beneath the gear's contact surface caused by the surface pressure in lubricated condition is analyzed. To evaluate the influence of the clearances between a gear tooth and a pinion tooth on the stress field, two kinds of tooth profile models - conventional cylinder contact model and new numerical model - were chosen. Kinematics of the gear is taken into account to obtain the numerical model which is the accurate geometric clearances between a gear tooth and a pinion tooth. Transient elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) analysis is performed to get the surface pressure. The sub-stress field is obtained by using Love's rectangular patch solution. The analysis results show that the sub-surface stress is quite dependent on both the surface pressures and the profile models. The maximum effective stress of the new model is lower than that of the old model. The depth where the maximum effective stress occurs in the new model is not proportional to the intensity of the external load.

A Study on Correction of the Gear Tooth Profile Error by Finish Roll Forming (전조가공을 이용한 기어의 치형오차수정에 관한 연구)

  • This study deals with the correction of gear tooth profile error by finish roll forming. First, we experimentally confirmed that the tooth profile error is a synthesis of the concave error and the pressure angle error. Since various types of tooth profile errors appear in the experiments, we introduced evaluation parameters for rolling gears to objectively evaluate profile quality. Using these evaluation parameters, we clarified the relationship among the tooth profile error, the addendum modification factor (A. M. factor), and the tool loading force. We verified the character of concave error, pressure angle error, tool loading force and number of cycles of finish roll forming by using a forced displacement method. This study makes clear that tool loading force and number of cycles of finish roll forming are very important factors that affect involute tooth profile error. The results of the experiment and analysis show that the proposed method reduces concave and pressure angle errors.

Analysis of Gear Noise and Design for Gear Noise Reduction (저소음 치차설계를 위한 치형수정에 관한 연구)

  • The area of gear vibration and noise, has recently been the focus of many studies. The proper kinematic and geometric design of gears, the mathematical modeling of gear system are essential for a good design. This work present a gear disign for reducing noise, and practical approaches used for machinery noise reduction slong with the summary of methods available for predicting gear noise in terms of the transmis- sion error, and show a comparative study with other methods. A new tooth profile modification is proposed for reducing vibration and noise of involute gears. The method is based on the use of cubic spline curves. The tooth profile is constrained to assume an involute shape during the loaded operation. Thus the new gear profile assures conjugate motion at all points along the line of action. The new profile is found to result in a more uniform static transmission error compared to not only standard involute profile but also modificated profile therby contributing to the improvement of vibration and noise characteristics of the gear.

Mechanical characteristics of involute-circular arc composite tooth profile (인벌류우트-圓弧 合成齒形의 諸特性)

  • In this study, full-rounded tip curve of rack and its mating fillet curve of pinion in Involute-circular arc composite tooth profile are derived. Mechanical characteristics are calculated analytically, i.e., Specific sliding, Nominal bending stress at working root circle and the Contact factor of the arc of contact in circular arc part to the arc of double contact. These characteristics compared with standard involute tooth profile are improved in circular arc part of composite tooth profile. To obtain more efficient composite tooth profile, we studied these characteristics with regard to the changes of unwound angle and radius of circualr arc. And a design method of composite tooth profile is suggested. Composite tooth profile are compared with standard involute tooth profile.

  • This paper describes a computer aided design system for spur and helical gears. To establish the appropriate program, an integrate approach based on a rule-base system was adopted. This system is implemented on the personal computer and its environment is a commercial CAD package called AutoCAD. This system includes a main program and five sub-modules such as data input module, tooth profile drawing module, strength calculation module, and drawing edit module. In the main program, all the sub-modules are loaded and the type of gear and tooth profile are selected. In the data input module, the variables which are necessary to the design of gear are selected from the database. In the drawing module, from the calculated results, the required gear tooth is produced on the screen. The developed system that aids gear designer provides powerful capabilities for gear design.
