  • This paper studies the application of a fuzzy-ARTMAP neural network to digital communications channel equalization. This approach provides new solutions for solving the problems, such as complexity and long training, which found when implementing the previously developed neural-basis equalizers. The proposed fuzzy-ARTMAP equalizer is fast and easy to train and includes capabilities not found in other neural network approaches; a small number of parameters, no requirements for the choice of initial weights, automatic increase of hidden units, no risk of getting trapped in local minima, and the capability of adding new data without retraining previously trained data. In simulation studies, binary signals were generated at random in a linear channel with Gaussian noise. The performance of the proposed equalizer is compared with other neural net basis equalizers, specifically MLP and RBF equalizers.

  • This paper considers a two-user Gaussian interference channel with energy harvesting transmitters. Different than conventional battery powered wireless nodes, energy harvesting transmitters have to adapt transmission to availability of energy at a particular instant. In this setting, the optimal power allocation problem to maximize the sum throughput with a given deadline is formulated. The convergence of the proposed iterative coordinate descent method for the problem is proved and the short-term throughput maximizing offline power allocation policy is found. Examples for interference regions with known sum capacities are given with directional water-filling interpretations. Next, stochastic data arrivals are addressed. Finally, online and/or distributed near-optimal policies are proposed. Performance of the proposed algorithms are demonstrated through simulations.

  • A simple but accurate analytical model for the lateral channel electric field in gate-offset structured Lightly Doped Drain MOSFET has been developed. Our model assumes Gaussian doping profile, rather than simple uniform doping, for the lightly doped region and our model can be applied to LDD structures where the junction depth of LDD is not identical to the heavily doped drain. The validity of our model has been proved by comparing our analytical results with two dimensional device simulations. Due to its simplicity, our model gives a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in reducing the electric field in the LDD MOSFET. The model shows clearly the dependencies of the lateral channel electric field on the drain and gate bias conditions and process, design parameters. Advantages of our analytical model over costly 2-D device simulations is to identify the effects of various parameters, such as oxide thickness, junction depth, gate/drain bias, the length and doping concentration of the lightly doped region, on the peak electric field that causes hot-electron pohenomena, individually. Our model can also find the optimum doping concentration of LDD which minimizes the peak electric field and hot-electron effects.

  • Most works on importance sampling (IS) as an efficient evaluation technique havd been done in an additibe white gaussian noise channel (Awgn). In this paper we propose a CQ(conventional importance sampling and quasi-translantion) IS technique for the mobile radio channel modeled as Rician fading, and analyze the IS estimator's variance to determine optimum IS parameters and the minimum number of run times. Reference showed that CIS technique has a poor performance for systems with meories, but it is shown that the CIS technique can be improved by combining with quasi-translation technique even for systems with memories. Here the CQ IS technique modifies the variance of additive noise and also performs quasi-translation for the fading distribution. We determine the optimum IS parameters of the proposed CQ IS estimator and whow that the simulation gains are about 10$^{3}$~10$^{6}$ for the mobile communication systems with memories in case of the expected BERs 10$^{-5}$ ~10$^{-8}$ .

  • This paper proposes an efficient scheme to track a time variant channel induced by multi-path Rayleigh fading in mobile MIMO-OFDM systems with null sub-carriers. The proposed adaptive channel tracking scheme removes in the frequency domain the interfering signals of the other transmit (Tx) antennas by using a predicted channel frequency response before starting the channel estimation. Time domain channel estimation is then performed to reduce the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). The simulation results show that the proposed method is better than the conventional channel tracking method [3] in time varying channel environments. At a Doppler frequency of 300 Hz and bit error rates (BER) of 10-3, signal-to-noise power ratio (Eb/N0) gains of about 2.5 dB are achieved relative to the conventional channel tracking method [3]. At a Doppler frequency of 600 Hz, the performance difference between the proposed method and conventional one becomes much larger.

  • The I/Q unbalance which is generated by non-ideal components such as a $90^{\circ}$ phase shifter and I/Q filters is an inevitable physical phenomenon and leads to performance degradation when we implement a coherent two-dimensional (2-D) modulation/demodulation system. This paper provides an exact and general expression for the SEP(symbol error probability) of DVB-S2 system with I/Q phase and amplitude unbalance over AWGN channel. Coordinate rotation and shift techniques used to redefine a received signal are key mathematical tools. In conclusion, the derived result is expressed as a linear combination of the 2-D Gaussian Q-functions.

  • In this paper, we present an exact and general expression involving two-dimensional Gaussian Q-functions for the bit error rate (BER) of hierarchical MPSK with I/Q phase and amplitude imbalances over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. First we derive a BER expression for the k-th bit of hierarchical 4, 8, 16-PSK signal constellations when Gray code bit mapping is employed. Then, from the derived k-th bit BER expression, we present the exact and general average BER expression for hierarchical MPSK with I/Q phase and amplitude imbalances. This result can readily be applied to numerical evaluation for various cases of practical interest in an I/Q unbalanced hierarchical MPSK system, because the one- and two-dimensional Gaussian Q-functions can be easily and directly computed usinB commonly available mathematical software tools.

  • The error rate equation of MSK(Minimum Shift Keying) signal transmitted through the fading channel has been derived in the interference and impulsive noise environments. The error rate performance of MSK system have been evaluated and shown in figures as parameters of carrier-to-noise power ratio(CNR), carrier-to-interferer power ratio(CIR), impulsive index, the ratio of Gaussian noise power component to impulsive noise power component, and fading figure. The results show that, in the fading environment, the error is occurred more frequently by Gaussian noise in the deep fading, however in the shallow fading, impulsive noise is more dominant than Gaussian noise. And in thepresence of interference and fading, interferer deteriorates the MSK receiving system severely even if the interferer is weak.

  • This paper introduces M-PPAM(M-ary Pulse Position and Amplitude Modulation) architecture, combined PPM(Pulse Position Modulation) with PAM(Pulse Amplitude Modulation). Since M-PPAM can transmit several bits using one pulse, it is mon effective than PPM or PAM. Also, to obtain the same data transmission rate with PPM or PAM, M-PPAM can use a long pulse repetition period. This method will be able to use in the multi-path fading environment such as indoor condition. To accomodate multiple users, direct sequence technique is used. This paper has provided the modeling method of the M-PPAM DS-UWB receiver covering multi-user interference(MUI) with the Standard Gaussian Approximation under Gaussian channel. The performance of the receiver is simulated.

  • In this paper, the Euclidean distance between the probability density functions (PDFs) for biased errors and a Dirac-delta function located at zero on the error axis is proposed as a new performance criterion for adaptive systems in non-Gaussian noise environments. Also, based on the proposed performance criterion, a supervised adaptive algorithm is derived and applied to adaptive equalization in the shallow-water communication channel distorted by severe multipath fading, impulsive and DC-bias noise. The simulation results compared with the performance of the existing MEDE algorithm show that the proposed algorithm yields over 5 dB of MSE enhancement and the capability of relocating the mean of the error PDF to zero on the error axis.
