  • All objects emit thermal radiation and this radiation is the basis of the techniques used to detect flames. The usual phenomena occurring in the initial stage of a fire are generally invisible products of a combustion and visible smoke. Liquid or gaseous materials do not undergo a smoldering stage such fires develop very rapidly. Also, the heat generated by the initial flames is usually not sufficient to active a heat detector. In this case the most effective criterion for automatic fire detection is the flame. In fire regulation of korea, the compulsory standard provided that a flame detector shall be installed a place of the attachment hight of detector is higher than 20 m, chemical plants, hangar, refinery, etc.. The result of the research and development are discriminated between a flame and other radiant emitters, developed PZT pyroelectric element is based on the use of photo-voltanic cell, developed IR band-pass filter that only allow a 4.3 radiation wavelength to reach the sensors and developed IR flame detector.

  • The application of Carbon and graphite based materials in unprotected environment is limited to a temperature of $450^{\circ}C$ or so because of their susceptibility to oxidation at this temperature and higher. To over come these obstacles a low cost chemical vapour reaction process (CVR) was developed to give crystalline and high purity SiC coating on graphite and isotropic C/C composite. CVR is most effective carbothermal reduction method for conversation of a few micron of carbon layer to SiC. In the CVR method, a sic conversation layer is formed by reaction between carbon and gaseous reagent silicon monoxide at high temperature. Characterization of SiC coating was carried out using SEM. The other properties studied were hardness density and conversion efficiency.

  • In this paper, a co-axial type ozonizer varied with discharge gap was designed and manufactured for investigating (1) discharge characteristics with variation of output voltage power supply, flow rate and gap distance (2) ozone generation and solubility characteristics with variation of flow rate, gap distance and discharge power. Pure oxygen was used as process gas of the co-axial type ozonizer.

  • Ab initio and density functional theory methods have been employed to study all theoretically possible conformers of fluoroacetic acid. Molecular geometries and energetic of cis and trans monomers and cis dimers in gaseous phase have been obtained using HF, B3LYP and MP2 levels of theory, implementing 6-311++G(d,p) basis set. It was found that cis rotamers are more stable. In addition, it was found that in comparison with acetic acid the strength of hydrogen bonding in fluoroacetic acid decreased. The infrared spectrum frequencies and the vibrational frequency shifts are reported. Natural population and atom in molecule analysis performed to predict electrostatic interactions in the cyclic H-bonded complexes and charges. The proton transfer reaction is studied and activation energy is compared with acetic acid proton transfer reaction.

  • Thermal transpiration device(Knudsen pump) having no moving parts can self-pump the gaseous propellant by temperature gradient only (cold to hot). We designed, fabricated the Knudsen pump and analyzed pressure gradient efficiency of membrane according to Knudsen number under vacuum condition. In this paper, we measured presented pumping efficiency of Knudsen pump according to Hanji membrane.

  • Development of a dynamic engine model is essential to predict and analyze of dynamic characteristics from a natural gas engine. Reducing the harmful exhaust emissions can be accomplished by a precise air-fuel ratio control. In this paper, the dynamic engine model was proposed and included mixture formation and intake process because the dynamic characteristics can be affected by the mixture components such as an air and a gaseous fuel. The air mass flow, the partial pressure ratio, and the gas constant are changed by variations of the components in the mixture formation and intake process. The dynamic engine model is applied to the natural gas engine for validation test. Experimental results show that the dynamic engine model is effective to predict the dynamic characteristics of the natural gas engine.

  • Gasoline engine have proved its utility in light, medium and heavy duty vehicle in every sector of the world community. The concern about long term availability of petroleum and the increasing threat for the environment by the increasing load of vehicular emission, compel the technology to upgrade itself for meeting the challenges. CNG is environmentally clean alternative to the existing SI Engines with out much change in the hardware. Many researchers have found this as a potential substitute to meet the energy requirement. Higher octane number and higher self ignition temperature make it a good gaseous fuel. Although power output is slightly lesser than the gasoline it's thermal efficiency is better than the gasoline for the same SI Engine. Results showed that reduced CO, hydrocarbon emissions is a favorable outcome, with slight increase in $NO_x$ emission when compared with gasoline fuel to dual fuel mode in the existing SI Engines.

  • A series of fire experiments has been conducted to provide an improved understanding of the fire structure of under-ventilated compartment fires. A comprehensive and quantitative assessment of gaseous species from the fire was made in the upper layer of fire in a 40 % reduced scale ISO 9705 fire compartment. The global equivalence ratio (GER) concept was used to characterize the fire behavior for various fire sizes, fuel types and ventilation conditions. The oxygen concentration in the upper layer reached to zero near the global equivalence ratio of $0.4{\sim}0.6$ while the carbon monoxide concentration increases with increasing the global equivalence ratio. Classification parameters of ISO19706 were also compared with the reduced scale experimental data for under ventilation fire.

  • Humans rely on the availability of a supply of gaseous oxygen for survival. If the minimal requirements for oxygen are not met, both mental and physical abilities and performance are degraded rapidly. So oxygen systems are required for the aircraft operating at high altitude to prevent physical and psychological problems, or loss of consciousness in an aircraft pilot, flight crew, or passengers. If oxygen system and equipments are to be included in the type design of an airplane, applicant should consider applicable airworthiness requirements and operating rules. In this paper we analyze the various oxygen system requirements for the type of aircraft, oxygen system, and operating conditions.

  • High-order harmonics from gaseous atoms driven by an intense femtosecond laser pulse can form an attosecond pulse train. By selecting suitable harmonic generation conditions, the harmonic spectrum can be broad enough to form sub-hundred attoseconds. One serious limitation, however, comes from the inherent attosecond chirp originating from the harmonic generation process. We have proposed to compensate for the positive attosecond chirp by making use of negative group delay dispersion of a metallic x-ray filter or a noble gas. We generated 241-as pulses from neon and compressed them to 106 as after propagating through argon, close to the transform-limited duration of 98 as.
