The virtual Frisch-grid method for room-temperature radiation detectors has been widely used because of its simplicity and high performance. Recently, side electrodes were separately attached to each surface of the detectors instead of covering the entire detector surface with a single electrode. The side-electrode structure enables the measurement of the three-dimensional (3D) gamma-ray interaction in the detector. The positional information of the interaction can then be utilized to precisely calibrate the response of the detector for gamma-ray spectroscopy and imaging. In this study, we developed a 3D position-sensitive 5 × 5 × 12 mm3 cadmium-zinc-telluride (CZT) detector and applied a flattening method to correct detector responses. Collimated gamma-rays incident on the surface of the detector were scanned to evaluate the positional accuracy of the detection system. Positional distributions of the radiation interactions with the detector were imaged for quantitative and qualitative evaluation. The energy spectra of various radioisotopes were measured and improved by the detector response calibration according to the calculated positional information. The energy spectra ranged from 59.5 keV (emitted by 241Am) to 1332 keV (emitted by 60Co). The best energy resolution was 1.06% at 662 keV when the CZT detector was voxelized to 20 × 20 × 10.
Most high energy cosmic rays (CRs) are thought to be produced by diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) in supernova remnants (SNRs) within the Galaxy. Plasma and MHD simulations have shown that the self-excitation of MHD waves and amplification of magnetic fields via plasma instabilities are an integral part of DSA for strong collisionless shocks. In this study we explore how plasma processes such as plasma instabilities and wave-particle interactions can affect the energy spectra of CR protons and electrons, using time-dependent DSA simulations of SNR shocks. We demonstrate that the time-dependent evolution of the shock dynamics, the self-amplified magnetic fields and $Alfv{\acute{e}nic$ drift govern the highest energy end of the CR energy spectra. As a result, the spectral cutoffs in nonthermal X-ray and ${\gamma}$-ray radiation spectra are regulated by the evolution of the highest energy particles, which are injected at the early phase of SNRs. We also find that the maximum energy of CR protons can be boosted significantly only if the scale height of the magnetic field precursor is long enough to contain the diffusion lengths of the particles of interests. Thus, detailed understandings of nonlinear wave-particle interactions and time-dependent DSA simulations are crucial for understanding the nonthermal radiation from CR acceleration sources.
For prompt gamma ray imaging for biomedical applications and environmental radiation monitoring, we propose herein a multiple-scattering Compton camera (MSCC). MSCC consists of three or more semiconductor layers with good energy resolution, and has potential for simultaneous detection and differentiation of multiple radio-isotopes based on the measured energies, as well as three-dimensional (3D) imaging of the radio-isotope distribution. In this study, we developed an analytic simulator and a 3D image generator for a MSCC, including the physical models of the radiation source emission and detection processes that can be utilized for geometry and performance prediction prior to the construction of a real system. The analytic simulator for a MSCC records coincidence detections of successive interactions in multiple detector layers. In the successive interaction processes, the emission direction of the incident gamma ray, the scattering angle, and the changed traveling path after the Compton scattering interaction in each detector, were determined by a conical surface uniform random number generator (RNG), and by a Klein-Nishina RNG. The 3D image generator has two functions: the recovery of the initial source energy spectrum and the 3D spatial distribution of the source. We evaluated the analytic simulator and image generator with two different energetic point radiation sources (Cs-137 and Co-60) and with an MSCC comprising three detector layers. The recovered initial energies of the incident radiations were well differentiated from the generated MSCC events. Correspondingly, we could obtain a multi-tracer image that combined the two differentiated images. The developed analytic simulator in this study emulated the randomness of the detection process of a multiple-scattering Compton camera, including the inherent degradation factors of the detectors, such as the limited spatial and energy resolutions. The Doppler-broadening effect owing to the momentum distribution of electrons in Compton scattering was not considered in the detection process because most interested isotopes for biomedical and environmental applications have high energies that are less sensitive to Doppler broadening. The analytic simulator and image generator for MSCC can be utilized to determine the optimal geometrical parameters, such as the distances between detectors and detector size, thus affecting the imaging performance of the Compton camera prior to the development of a real system.

The synthesis, X-ray crystallography, spectroscopic (IR, UV-vis), and electrochemical properties of the title compound, $[H_3O][Cr(dipic)_2][H_3O^+.Cl^-]$ (1), ($H_2dipic$ = 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid), are reported. This complex crystallizes in the monoclinic space group Cc with a = 14.9006(10) ${\AA}$, b = 12.2114(8) ${\AA}$, c = 8.6337(6) ${\AA}$, ${\alpha}=90.00^{\circ}$, ${\beta}=92.7460(10)^{\circ}$, ${\gamma}=90.00^{\circ}$, and V = 1569.16(18) ${\AA}^3$ with Z = 4. The hydrogen bonding and noncovalent interactions play roles in the stabilization of the structure. In order to gain a better understanding of the most important geometrical parameters in the structure of the complex, atoms in molecules (AIM) method at B3LYP/6-31G level of theory has been employed.
Polarization is a basic property of light and is fundamentally linked to the internal geometry of a source of radiation. Polarimetry complements photometric, spectroscopic, and imaging analyses of sources of radiation and has made possible multiple astrophysical discoveries. In this article I review (i) the physical basics of polarization: electromagnetic waves, photons, and parameterizations; (ii) astrophysical sources of polarization: scattering, synchrotron radiation, active media, and the Zeeman, Goldreich-Kylafis, and Hanle effects, as well as interactions between polarization and matter (like birefringence, Faraday rotation, or the Chandrasekhar-Fermi effect); (iii) observational methodology: on-sky geometry, influence of atmosphere and instrumental polarization, polarization statistics, and observational techniques for radio, optical, and $X/{\gamma}$ wavelengths; and (iv) science cases for astronomical polarimetry: solar and stellar physics, planetary system bodies, interstellar matter, astrobiology, astronomical masers, pulsars, galactic magnetic fields, gamma-ray bursts, active galactic nuclei, and cosmic microwave background radiation.

This paper introduces a novel concept of the pulsed neutron facility (PNF) for maximizing the production of the thermal neutrons and its application to medical use based on prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) using Monte Carlo simulations. The PNF consists of a compact D-T neutron generator, a graphite pile, and a detection system using Cadmium telluride (CdTe) detector arrays. The configuration of fuel pins in the graphite monolith and the design and materials for the moderating layer were studied to optimize the thermal neutron yields. Biological samples - normal and cancerous breast tissues - including chlorine, a trace element, were used to investigate the sensitivity of the characteristic γ-rays by neutron-trace material interactions and the detector responses of multiple particles. Around 90 % of neutrons emitted from a deuterium-tritium (D-T) neutron generator thermalized as they passed through the graphite stockpile. The thermal neutrons captured the chlorines in the samples, then the characteristic γ-rays with specific energy levels of 6.12, 7.80 and 8.58 MeV were emitted. Since the concentration of chlorine in the cancerous tissue is twice that in the normal tissue, the count ratio of the characteristic g-rays of the cancerous tissue over the normal tissue is approximately 2.
The molecular structure of a natural compound was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The compound was isolated by methanol extraction and repeated chromatography from the stem of Paulownia tomentosa. Yellow prismatic crystals of the compound, which were recrystallized from tetrahydrofuran, are triclinic, with a = 7.310 (6), b = 10.753(6), c = 11.586(5) ${\AA}.\;\alpha= 93.30(6),\;\beta=105.62(10),\;\gamma=109.49(7)^\circ,\;D_x=1.514,\;D_m=1.51 g/cm^3$, space group P1 and Z = 2. The structure was solved by direct method, and refined by least-squares procedure to the final R-value of 0.032 for 1271 independent reflections $(F\le3\sigma{(F))}$. The compound is one of new furanquinone analogue. The molecule has a nearly planar conformation with an intramolecular hydrogen bond. In the crystal, the planar molecules are arranged as a prallel sheet-like pattern, and these stackings are stabilized by the O-H...O type intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The other intermolecular contacts appear to be the normal van der Waals interactions.

Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) is one of the most valuable oilseed crop in the world. It is widely used in various industries, such as food, animal feed, energy and chemical industries. In order to improve the industrial requirements for rapeseed, useful agronomic characteristics (higher yields and disease resistance etc.) and modified oil traits (fatty acid composition and fat content) are important in rapeseed. However, Korea has limiting genetic resources of novel traits in rapeseed. In this research, novel rapeseed mutant genotypes by mutation breeding was developed. The mutant lines were generated by the treatment of the seeds of the original cultivar 'Tamra' with 700 Gy of gamma-ray (60Co). Mutants showing varied in flowering time, crude fat content, seed yield and fatty acid content that exhibited stable inheritance of the mutated characteristics from M5 to M7 generations were selected. We investigated genetic variation using SNPs identified from GBS analysis in rapeseed mutant lines derived from the gamma-ray, and interactions between the major agronomic and the oil traits. Significantly associated SNP loci were explored along with candidate genes using SNPs obtained by GBS analysis. As a results of association mapping, a total of 322 SNPs were significantly associated with agronomic traits (155 SNPs) and oil traits (167 SNPs). A total of 70 genes were annotated from agronomic characteristics SNPs; among them 7 genes significantly enriched in developmental process, and a total of 70 genes were annotated from crude fat content and fatty acid compositions SNPs; among them, 11genes were significantly enriched in biosynthetic process. These results could be used for the selection of rapeseed cultivar with enhanced qualities and potential economic benefits.
