  • The multi scale wavelet-Galerkin method implemented in an adaptive manner has an advantage of obtaining accurate solutions with a substantially reduced number of interpolation points. The method is becoming popular, but its numerical efficiency still needs improvement. The objectives of this investigation are to present a new numerical scheme to improve the performance of the multi scale adaptive wavelet-Galerkin method and to give detailed implementation procedure. Specifically, the subdomain technique suitable for multiscale methods is developed and implemented. When the standard wavelet-Galerkin method is implemented without domain subdivision, the interaction between very long scale wavelets and very short scale wavelets leads to a poorly-sparse system matrix, which considerably worsens numerical efficiency for large-sized problems. The performance of the developed strategy is checked in terms of numerical costs such as the CPU time and memory size. Since the detailed implementation procedure including preprocessing and stiffness matrix construction is given, researchers having experiences in standard finite element implementation may be able to extend the multi scale method further or utilize some features of the multiscale method in their own applications.

  • In this paper a capacitance matrix method is developed for the Poisson equation on a rectangle $$ (1-1) Lu \equiv -(u_{xx} + u_{yy} = f, (x, y) \in \Omega \equiv (0, 1) \times (0, 1) $$ with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition $$ (1-2) u = 0, (x, y) \in \partial\Omega $$ where $\partial\Omega$ is the boundary of the region $\Omega$.

  • In this study, the adaptive analysis procedure of crack propagation based on the element-free Galerkin(EFG) method is presented. The adaptivity analysis in quasi-static crack propagation is achieved by adding and/or removing the node along the background integration cell that are refined or recovered according to the estimated error. These errors are obtained basically by calculating the difference between the values of the projected stresses and original EFG stresses. To evaluate the performance of proposed adaptive procedure, the crack propagation behavior is investigated for several examples. The results of these examples show the efficiency and accuracy of proposed scheme in crack propagation analysis.

  • In this paper, the adaptive nodal generation procedure based on the estimated local and global error in the element-free Galerkin (EFG) method is proposed. To investigate the possibility of h-type adaptivity of EFG method, a simple nodal refinement scheme is used. By adding new node along the background cell that is used in numerical integration, both of the local and global errors can be controlled adaptively. These errors are estimated by calculating the difference between the values of the projected stresses and original EFG stresses. The ultimate goal of this study is to develop the reliable nodal generator based on the local and global errors that is estimated posteriori. To evaluate the performance of proposed adaptive procedure, the convergence behavior is investigated for several examples.

  • In this study, a new method coupling of Element-Free Galerkin(EFG) method and Infinite Elements(IE) method is presented for extending application of the EFG method to engineering problems in unbounded domain. EFG method and IE method are briefly reviewed, and then the coupling procedure of the two methods is proposed. Numerical Algorithm by way of EFG-lE coupling technique is also developed. Numerical results illustrate the performance of the proposed technique. The accuracy of numerical solutions by the developed algorithm is guaranteed in comparing those of the other methods.

  • In order to examine the effect of constant excitation on nonlinear interactions in vibrating modes of circular plates, we added a constant term to a harmonic excitation. A two-degree-of freedom system is derived by using the Galerkin's procedure. The system is shown to have quadratic and cubic nonlinearities subjected to a harmonic excitation.

  • The complex resonant frequency problem of a superconductor patch is formulated in terms of an integral equation which is the kernel of a dyadic Green's function. To include the effect of the superconductivity of the microstrip patch, the surface complex impedance of the superconductor film is introduced using the two fluids model of Gorter and Casimir. The Galerkin procedure is used in the resolution of the electric field integral equation. Numerical results concerning the effect of the operating temperature of a superconductor patch on the characteristics of the antenna are presented.

  • In this study, error estimates using the stress projecting scheme and adaptive nodal generation procedure in the element-free Galerkin(EFG) method are proposed. The essence of proposed error estimates is to use the difference between the values of the projected stress and these given directly by the EFG solution. The stress projection can be obtained simply by taking product of shape function based on a different domain of influence with the stresses at nodes. An adaptive procedure based on error estimates is discussed in this paper. By use of background integration cell, adding node scheme at high error norm area is proposed. To demonstrate the performance of proposed scheme, the convergence behavior is investigated for several examples

  • In this study, the fracture phenomena of optical disks are discussed by theoretical and experimental approaches and then some recommendations are presented to prevent the fracture. Linear equations of motion are discretized by using the Galerkin approximation. From the discretized equations, the dynamic responses are computed by the generalized- time integration method. As a fracture criterion for optical disks, the critical crack length is presented. From experimental methods, the fracture procedure is analyzed. The fracture occurs when disks have crack on the inner radius of the disks. Since the crack growth and the fracture result from the stress concentration on the tip of the crack, a measure should be taken to overcome the stress concentration. This problem can be resolved by the structural modification of a disk. This study proposes 3 types of improved optical disks.
