  • A compact and broadband balun is designed using a conventional right-handed transmission line (RHTL) and a left-handed transmission line (LHTL) with lumped elements only. The proposed balun maintains a phase difference of $180^{\circ}{\pm}12^{\circ}$ at the output ports for the frequency range of 1.27 GHz-2.69 GHz. Nevertheless, the circuit size is merely $9.5mm{\times}12.7mm$. To verify the performance of the proposed balun, we attached it to a dipole-type antenna and observed that the return loss is greater than 10 dB for the frequency range between 1.86 GHz and GHz. The radiation pattern and peak gain are similar to those of the dipole antenna with a conventional balun.

  • A 2.4 GHz low phase noise fully integrated LC voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) in $0.18\;{\mu}m$ CMOS technology is presented in this paper. The VCO is optimized based on phase noise reduction. The design of the VCO uses differential varactors which are adopted for symmetry of the circuit, and consider AM-PM conversion due to a cross-coupled pair. The VCO is designed to draw 3 mA from 1.8 V supply voltage. Simulated phase noise is -137.3 dBc/Hz at 3 MHz offset. The tuning range is found to be 300 MHz range from 2.3 GHz to 2.6 GHz.

  • A microstrip patch array designed at 35 GHz is described for use in the detection of the position of moving targets. To obtain wide detection range, the array is arranged to give a narrow beamwidth in the elevation plane and a wide beamwidth on the azimuth plane. This can be achieved by aligning the electric field plane of each element to the array axis. Employing a 3 dB-tapered feed network, the array has a side lobe level of less than -20 dB and wider azimuth beam width of 12.8$^{\circ}$ simultaneously.

  • Monolithic SiGe heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) variable gain amplifiers (VGAs) with a feedforward configuration have been newly developed for 5 GHz applications. Two types of the feedforward VGAs have been made: one using a coupled-emitter resistor and the other using an HBT-based current source. At 5.2 GHz, both of the VGAs achieve a dynamic gain-control range of 23 dB with a control-voltage range from 0.4 to 2.6 V. The gain-tuning sensitivity is 90 mV/dB. At $V_{CTRL}$= 2.4 V, the 1 dB compression output power, $P_{1-dB}$, and dc bias current are 0 dBm and 59 mA in a VGA with an emitter resistor and -1.8 dBm and 71mA in a VGA with a constant current source, respectively.

  • A new dual-loop digital delay-locked loop (DLL) using a hybrid (binary + sequential) search algorithm is presented to achieve both wide-range operation and high delay resolution. A new phase-interpolation range selector (PIRS) and a variable successive approximation register (VSAR) algorithm are adopted to resolve the boundary switching and harmonic locking problems of conventional digital DLLs. The proposed digital DLL, implemented in a $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS process, occupies an active area of $0.19mm^2$ and operates over a wide frequency range of 0.15-1.5 GHz. The DLL dissipates a power of 11.3 mW from a 1.8 V supply at 1 GHz. The measured peak-to-peak output clock jitter is 24 ps (effective pk-pk jitter = 16.5 ps) with an input clock jitter of 7.5 ps at 1.5 GHz. The delay resolution is only 2.2 ps.

  • Recent progresses in the live electrooptic imaging (LEI) technique are reviewed with emphasis on its functionality of real-time visual accesses to traveling electric waves in the GHz range. Together with the principles, configurations, and procedures for the visual observation experiments by an LEI camera system, the following results are described as examples indicating the wide application ranges of the technique; Ku-band waves on arrayed planar antennas, waves on a Gb/s-class digital circuit, W-band waves traveling both in slab-waveguide modes and aerially, backward-traveling wave along composite right/left-handed transmission line, and, waves in monolithic microwave integrated circuit module case.

  • A low cost solution employing harmonic oscillation to the frequency synthesizer at 5.8 GHz is proposed. The proposed frequency synthesizer is composed of 2.9GHz PLL chip, 2.9GHz oscillator, and 5.8GHz buffer amplifier. The measured data shows a frequency tuning range of 290MHz, ranging from 5.65 to 5.94GHz, about 0.5dBm of output power, and a phase noise of -107.67 dBc/Hz at the 100kHz offset frequency. All spurious signals including fundamental oscillation power (2.9GHz) are suppressed at least 15dBc than the desired second harmonic signal.

  • Lots of integration work has been done in order to miniaturize the devices for communication. To do this work, one of key work is to get miniaturized inductor with high Q factor for RF circuitry. However, it is not easy to get high Q inductor with silicon based substrate in the range of GHz. Although silicon is well known for its good electrical and mechanical characteristics, silicon has many losses due to small resistivity and high permittivity in the range of high frequency. MEMS technology is a key technology to fabricate miniaturized devices and LTCC is one of good substrate materials in the range of high frequency due to its characteristics of high resistivity and low permittivity. Therefore, we proposed and studied to fabricate and analyze the inductor on the LTCC substrate with MEMS fabrication technology as the one of solutions to overcome this problem. We succeeded in fabricating and characterizing the high Q inductor on the LTCC substrate and then compared and analyzed the results of this inductor with that on a silicon and a glass substrate. The inductor on the LTCC substrate has larger Q factor value and inductance value than that on a silicon and a glass substrate. The values of Q factor with the LTCC substrate are 12 at 3 GHz, 33 at 6 GHz, 51 at 7 GHz and the values of inductance is 1.8, 1.5, 0.6 nH in the range of 5 GHz on the silicon, glass, and LTCC substrate, respectively.

  • The national standards of microwave power in X-band and Ku-band were established using the waveguide microcalorimeters and have been disseminated to the related industries to contribute to industrial development. Through the comparisons and analysis of the measured effective efficiencies for waveguide thermistor mounts in the recent years, the accuracy for maintenance of power standards was confirmed.
