The utilization of buildings can be improved by extending them vertically. However, the added load of the extension might require building foundations to be underpinned; otherwise, the loads on the foundations might exceed their bearing capacity. In this study, a preloading method was presented aiming at transferring partial loads from existing piles to underpinning piles. A pneumatic-type model preloading device was developed and used to carry out centrifuge experiments to evaluate the load-displacement behavior of piles, the pile-soil interaction during preloading, and the additional loading caused by vertical extension. The results showed that the preloading devices effectively transfer load from existing piles to underpinning piles. In the additional loading test of group piles, the load-sharing ratio of a pile increased with its stiffness. The load-sharing ratio of a preloaded micropile was less than that of a non-preloaded micropile as a result of the reduction in axial stiffness caused by preloading before additional loading. Therefore, a slight reduction of the load-sharing capacity of an underpinning pile should be considered if the preloading method is applied. Further, two full scale preloading devices was developed. The devices preload underpinning piles and thereby produce reaction forces on a reaction frame to jack existing piles upward, thus transferring load from the existing piles to the underpinning piles. Specifically, screw-type and hydraulic-jack type devices were developed for the practical application of foundation underpinning during vertical extension, and their operability and load transfer effect verified via full-scale structural experiments.
When evaluating energy balance and temperature in reduced-scale fire experiments, which are conducted as an alternative to full-scale fire experiments, it is important to consider the similarity in the scale among these experiments. In this paper, a method considering the similarity of energy balance is proposed for setting the conditions for reduced-scale experiments of mechanically ventilated compartment fires. A small-scale fire experiment consisting of various cases with different compartment geometries (aspect ratios between 0.2 and 4.7) and heights of vents and fire sources was conducted under mechanical ventilation, and the energy balance in the quasi-steady state was evaluated. The results indicate the following: (1) although the compartment geometry varies the energy balance in a mechanically ventilated compartment, the variation in the energy balance can be evaluated irrespective of the compartment size and geometry by considering scaling factor F (∝heffAwRT, where heff is the effective heat transfer coefficient, Aw is the total wall area, and RT is the ratio of the spatial mean gas temperature to the exhaust temperature); (2) the value of RT, which is a part of F, reflects the effects of the compartment geometry and corresponds to the distributions of the gas temperature and wall heat loss.
The essential difference between precast concrete structures and in situ concrete structures lies in the precast concrete panel structres, it is necessary to understand the bahavior of joints and their implications regarding overall structural behavior. Form such a point of view, this experimental study observes the components and joint behavior under the stress states expected of precast concrete panel structures subjected to lateral loads. 2 full-scale subassemblages were fabricated and tested. The test results show that the characteristics of horizontsl joints and wall coupling beams mainly govern the whole hahavior of P.C. structres.
Brick veneer over steel stud backup wall is lighter and easier to construct compared to brick veneer over concrete masonry backup wall. However, due to the relatively low stiffness of the steel stud backup, the brick veneer tends to crack under wind load. This paper briefly introduces a new panelized brick veneer with steel frame backup wall system that is developed to potentially address this problem. The experimental study of the performance of this system under simulated wind loading is discussed in detail. The test setup details and the test specimens are introduced, results of major interests are presented, and performance of the new system is evaluated based on the test results.
When high waves and storm surge strike simultaneously, the characteristics of the fluid field change drastically from overtopping according to the wave runup height to overflow through a transition state that combines overtopping and overflows. However, an estimation model or evaluation method has not yet been established because there is not enough engineering data. This study developed a wave overtopping-overflow transition model based on a full-scale experiment involving wave overtopping and overflow transition, which appropriately reproduced the effect of waves or the temporal change in inundation flow. Using this model to perform a calculation for the wave overtopping and overflow transition process under typical circumstances, this study determined the wave runup height and features of the inundation flow under time series changes as an example.
The objective of the present study is to develop methodology for the assesment of combustion stability of liquid rocket injectors. To simulate actual combustion occurring inside of a thrust chamber, a full-scale injector has been employed in the study, which burns gaseous oxygen and mixture of methane and propane. The main idea of the experiment is that the mixing mechanism is considered as a dominant factor significantly affecting combustion instability in a full-scale thrust chamber. Single & multi split triplet injectors have been used with an open-end cylindrical combustion chamber. The characteristics revealed by excited dynamic pressures in gaseous combustion show degrees of relative acoustic damping depending on operating conditions. Upon test results, the direct comparison between various types of injectors can be realized for the selection of the best design among prospective injectors.
The objective of the present study is to conduct model combustion tests for double swirl coaxial injectors to identify their combustion stability characteristics. Gaseous oxygen and mixture of methane and propane have been used as simulant propellants. Two model chambers tuned to the If acoustic resonance mode of a full-scale thrust chamber were manufactured to be used as a combustion cylinder. The main idea of the experiment is that the mixing mechanism is considered as a dominant factor significantly affecting combustion instability in a full-scale thrust chamber. Self-excited dynamic pressure values in a model chamber show different combustion stability zones with respect to a recess number. Upon test results, couplings between combustion conditions and the IT acoustic resonance mode become strengthened with the increase of a recess length.
A mixture experiment is a special type of response surface experiment in which the factors are the ingredients or components of a mixture, and the response is a function of the proportions of each ingredient. Evolutionary operation is useful to improve on-line full-scale manufacturing processes by systematically changing the levels of the process variables without jeopardizing the product. This paper presents an evolutionary operation procedure for large-scale mixture production processes based on simplex search procedure, which can be beneficial to practitioners who should improve on-line mixture process quality while meeting the production schedule of the mixture product.
