Analyses of Influence of Frictional Heat on the Contact Stress of High-speed Micro-gears

  • When a small gear rotates at a very high speed over 40,000 rpm, frictional heat is generated on the gear surfaces. Thermal deformations and stresses arising from frictional heat may lower the efficiency and fatigue life of the high-speed gear. Especially, such frictional heat has much stronger effects on the performance of millimeter-sized high-speed gears used for surgical and dental hand-pieces, due to a small surface area. An analytical equation was derived to calculate frictional temperature on a mating gear surface and conduction heat transfer analysis was performed. Thermal deformation and contact stresses were then calculated using FEM for gears used for medical hand-pieces. The contact stresses of the meshed gear and pinion increase by 19.4% and 16.4%, respectively, when the frictional thermal deformations are considered.

  • Friction stir welding(FSW) was studied using commercial tool, FLOW-3D. The purpose of this study is to suggest a method to apply frictional heat in Computational fluid dynamics(CFD) analysis. Cylindrical tool shape was used, and the interface cells between tool surface and workpiece were tracked by its geometrical relations in order to consider the frictional heat in FSW. After tracking the interface cells, average area concept was used to calculate the frictional heat, which is related to interface area. Also three-dimensional heat source and visco-plastic flow were modeled. The frictional heat generation rate calculated numerically from the suggested algorithm was validated with the analytical solution. The numerical solution was well matched with the analytical solution, and the maximum percentage of error was around 3%.

Propagation Characteristics of a Surface Crack on a Semi-Infinite Body Due to Frictional Heating (마찰열에 의한 반무한체 표면균열의 전파특성)

  • In this paper, to examine the propagation of inclined surface crack due to frictional heating, analytic model is considered as the semi-infinite elastic body subjected to the thermo-mechanical loading of an asperity moving with a high speed. Considering the moving of frictional heat source and convection on a semi-infinite surface having inclined crack, theoretical analysis was carried out to estimate the propagation characteristics of thermo-mechanical crack. Numerical results showed that stress intensity factor $K_\prod/P_0\sqrt{c}$ is increasing with increasing velocity and frictional coefficient, inclined degree, decreasing crack length and the maximum value of it is positioned at the trailing edge. So it is shown that the propagation probability of surface crack is high at the trailing edge of contact area as increasing velocity and frictional coefficient, inclined degree, as decreasing crack length.

  • A linear elastic fracture mechanics analysis of multiful subsurface cracks propagation in a half-space subjected to moving thermomechanical surface traction was peformed using the finite element method. The effect of frictional heat at the sliding surface on the crack growth behavior is analyzed in terms of the thermal load and peclet number. The crack propagation direction is predicted in light of the magnitudes of the maximum shear and tensile stress intensity factor ranges. When moving thermomechanical surface traction exists, subsurface horizontal cracks are propagation in-plane crack growth rate at the beginning but they are propagation out-of-plane crack growth rate by the frictional heat which is occurrence by the repeated sliding contact.

  • A method has been developed to measure the surface temperature in a sliding tribosystem. The determination of the surface temperature was inferred from the temperature of hot spots which were generated by frictional heat. The temperature of hot spots was determined by regressing those digitized data on Gecim-Winer's theoretical model. The experimental results are discussed considering the important factors such as PV and frictional heat. The surface temperature rise is related to the thermal conductivity in low PV range. As PV increases, it reaches nearly constant value called the critical temperature.

  • The surface temperature at the interface of bodies in a sliding contact is one of the most important factors influencing the behavior of machine components. The calculation of the surface temperature at a sliding contact interface has been an interesting and important subject for tribologist. Temperature analyses were usually performed under the consideration contacted two bodies as semi-infinite. But the analysis was difficulty in being applied to finite body and considering the boundary condition. In this study, contact temperature rise of two finite bodies and surfaces due to frictional heating under the rectangular and the circular sliding contact is calculated. Heat partition factor is calculated using semi-infinite solid analysis and the temperature of the finite bodies is calculated using FVM. It will be shown that Most frictional heat in the fore part of contact region for sliding direction is conducted into body that has a moving heat source and the site of the maximum temperature rise moves to the opposite direction of sliding during sliding.

  • The sliding contact interface of machine components such as bearings, gears frequently operates in lubrication at the inception of sliding failure under high loads, speed and slip. The surface temperature at the interface of bodies in a sliding contact is one of the most important factors influencing the behavior of machine components. Most surface failure in sliding contact region result from frictional heat generation. However, it is difficult to measure temperature rise experimentally. So the calculation of the surface temperature at a sliding contact interface has long been an interesting and important subject for tribologist. The surface temperature rise is related in contact pressure, sliding speed, material properties and lubrication thickness. Though roughness, load, ect all of the condition, are same, film thickness varies with velocity. In this study, surface temperature rise due to frictional heating in lubrication is calculated with various velocities.   • A brake disk and a pad are important parts that affect the braking stability of a railway vehicle. Especially, because a brake disk stops the vehicle using conversion of the kinetic energy to frictional energy, thermal fatigue cracks are generated by the cyclic thermal load, as frictional heat, on a frictional surface and these cracks cause the fracture of a brake disk. Therefore, many researches for the thermal stress must be performed to improve the efficiency of brake disk and ensure the braking stability. In this study, we performed the thermal stress analysis for a ventilated brake disk with 3-D analysis model. For that, we simplified the shape of a ventilated hole to minimize problems that could be occurred in analysis process. Thermal stress analysis was performed in case that pressure distributions on a frictional surface is constant and is not. To determine pressure distributions of irregular case, pressure distribution analysis for a frictional surface was carried out. Finally using the results that were obtained through pressure distribution analysis, we carried out thermal stress analysis of each case and investigated the results of thermal stress analysis.

Characteristics of Sapphire Wafers Polishing Depending on Ion Conductivity of Silica Sol (실리카졸의 이온전도도 변화에 따른 사파이어 웨이퍼의 연마 특성)

  • CMP(Chemical Mechanical Polishing) Processes have been used to improve the planarization of the wafers in the semiconductor manufacturing industry. Polishing performance of CMP Process is determined by the chemical reaction of the liquid sol containing abrasive, pressure of the head portion and rotational speed of the polishing pad. However, frictional heat generated during the CMP process causes agglomeration of the particles and the liquidity degradation, resulting in a non-uniform of surface roughness and surface scratch. To overcome this chronic problem, herein, we introduced NaCl salt as an additive into silica sol for elimination the generation of frictional heat. The added NaCl reduced the zata potential of silica sol and increased the contact surface of silica particles onto the sapphire wafer, resulting in increase of the removal rate up to 17 %. Additionally, it seems that the silica particles adsorbed on the polishing pad decreased the contact area between the sapphire water and polishing pad, which suppressed the generation of frictional heat.
