  • This work focuses on the dynamic analysis of thermal barrier coated straight and curved turbine blades modelled as functionally graded sandwich panel under thermal environment. The pre- twisted straight/curved blade model is considered to be fixed to the hub and, the complete assembly of the hub and blade are assumed to be rotating. The functionally graded sandwich composite blade is comprised of functionally graded face-sheet material and metal alloy core. The constituents' material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependent, however, the overall properties are evaluated using Voigt's micromechanical scheme in conjunction with the modified power-law functions. The blade model kinematics is based on the equivalent single-layer shear deformation theory. The equations of motion are derived using the extended Hamilton's principle by including the effect of centrifugal forces, and further solved via 2D- isoparametric finite element approximations. The mesh refinement and validation tests are performed to illustrate the stability and accurateness of the present model. In addition, frequency characteristics of the pre-twisted rotating sandwich blades are computed under thermal environment at various sets of parametric conditions such as twist angles, thickness ratios, aspect ratios, layer thickness ratios, volume fractions, rotational velocity and blade curvatures which can be further useful for designing the blade type structures under turbine operating conditions.

  • The properties of Al-doped ZnO (AZO) films were investigated as a function of H2/(Ar + H2) gas ratio using an AZO (2 wt% Al2O3) ceramic target in a radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering system. The deposition process was done at 200 ℃ and in 2 × 10-2Torr working pressure and with various ratios of H2/(Ar + H2) gas. During the AZO film deposition process, partial H2 gas affected the AZO film characteristics. The electron resistivity (~ 9.21 × 10-4 Ωcm) was lowest and mobility (~17.8 ㎠/Vs) was highest in AZO films when the H2/(Ar + H2) gas ratio was 2.5%. When the H2/(Ar + H2) gas ratio was increased above 2.5%, the electron resistivity increased and mobility decreased with increasing H2/(Ar + H2) gas ratio in AZO films. The carrier concentration increased with increasing H2/(Ar + H2) gas ratio from 0% to 7.5%. This phenomenon was explained by reaction of hydrogen and oxygen and additional formation of oxygen vacancy. The average optical transmission in the visible light wavelength region over 90% and an orientation of the deposition was [002] orientation for AZO films grown with all H2/(Ar + H2) gas ratios.

  • This paper introduced some advantages of the time-frequency analysis of vibration and investigated, using the time-frequency transform, the characteristics of the transient motion of a tractor seat, which occurred during the tractor traversed over a rectangular obstacle on the flat surface. The characteristics of the short-time courier and wavelet transforms as time-frequency analysis methods were introduced and discussed to figure out which is more suitable to the analysis of the transient motions of agricultural tractors. Using each transform, transient vibration of a tractor seat was analyzed. Results of the analysis showed that the transient vibration of the seat was influenced by the natural frequencies of vertical mode of chassis, pitching mode of engine and pitching mode of cab of the tractor. The time sequence of the natural mode of tractor vibration was also revealed by the time-frequency analysis. The vibration path analysis by the time-frequency transform showed that the vibration energies transmitted from the front mounts to the seat were less than those from the rear mounts. The energy reduction ratios between the cab mounts and seat were also estimated to be about 72∼78%. The front mounts showed larger reduction than the rear mounts. However, the reduction difference between the right and left sides mounts was negligibly small. The short time Fourier transform was found to be a proper method for investigating the transient motions of farm machines and their effects on the ride vibration.

  • In this paper, numerical simulations of both low- and high-frequency buzz phenomena at the throttle ratios (T.R.) in Nagashima's experiment are performed. The dominant frequencies of the low-and high-frequency buzz in the experiment are about 109 Hz with T.R.=0.97 and 376 Hz with T.R.=0.55, respectively. An axisymmetric solver with the S-A turbulence model is used for the simulations, and DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform) on pressure histories is conducted for the buzz frequency analysis. In the present simulations, the free-stream Mach number and the Reynolds number based on the inlet diameter are 2 and $10^7$, respectively. Both the low- and high-frequency buzz phenomena are accomplished without the changes in the grid topology. The dominant frequency of the simulation is about 125 Hz with T.R.=0.97, while it is 399 Hz with T.R.=0.55.

  • In this paper, the derivation of the protection ratio for the digital microwave system with diversity is newly suggested for a basic guidance of initial planning for frequency coordination, and computational results are presented for an actual radio frequency band. The net filter discrimination has been also examined to see the effect of the adjacent channel protection ratio caused by adjacent channel interference. In addition, the protection ratios for the space or frequency diversity system are analyzed in terms of diversity improvement factors to find out an equivalent allowable noise-to-interference ratio (N/I) from degraded fade margin. According to results for 6.2 GHz system, with the space diversity of 25 m distance between antennas or the frequency diversity of ${\Delta}f/f=0.05$, under 64-QAM and 60 km at BER $10^{-6}$, the protection ratio can be greatly reduced in comparison to the non-diversity system. So, assuming that only the same protection ratio as the non-diversity system is kept, it is shown that the system with diversity may get more interference level of N/I allowing from 9.0 to - 5.9 dB or from 6.0 to - 4.3 dB for the space or frequency diversity. In consequence, it is concluded that the diversity system is more robust or tolerable for interferences or fades, which may play an important role in overcoming N/I to some extent.

  • The sensitivity of the product to the ongoing sinusoidal disturbances of the process has been investigated in the film casting of viscoelastic polymer fluids using frequency response analysis. As demonstrated for fiber spinning process (Jung et al., 2002; Devereux and Denn, 1994), this frequency response analysis is useful for examining the process sensitivity and the stability of extensional deformation processes including film casting. The results of the present study reveal that the amplification ratios or gains of the process/product variables such as the cross-sectional area at the take-up to disturbances exhibit resonant peaks along the frequency regime as expected for the systems having hyperbolic characteristics with spilt boundary conditions (Friedly, 1972). The effects on the sensitivity results of two important parameters of film casting, i.e., the fluid viscoelasticity and the aspect ratio of the casting equipment have been scrutinized. It turns out that depending on the extension thinning or thickening nature of the fluid, increasing viscoelasticity results in enlargement or reduction of the sensitivity, respectively. As regards the aspect ratio, it has been found that an optimum value exists making the system least sensitive. The present study also confirms that the frequency response method produces results that corroborate well those by other methods like linear stability Analysis and transient solutions response. • A new method is proposed to generate a 32-tupling frequency millimeter wave (MMW) with eight Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs) connected in parallel. Theoretical analyses and simulation experiments are conducted. The optical sideband suppression ratio (OSSR) of the obtained ±16th order optical sidebands are 61.54 dB and 61.42 dB, and the radio frequency spurious suppression ratios (RFSSRs) of the generated 32-tupling frequency MMW are 55.52 dB and 55.27 dB based on the theoretical analysis and simulation experiments, respectively; these outcomes verified the feasibility of the new method. The main parameters used to affect the stability of the generated signal are the modulation index and extinction ratio of MZM. Their effects on the OSSR and RFSSR of the generated signals are investigated when they deviate from their designed values. Compared with the other proposed methods for the generation of 32-tupling frequency MMW by MZM, our method has the best spectral purity and stability, and it is expected to have important MMW over fiber applications.

  • This research addresses experimentally the relationship between the excitation frequency and both hoop and axial wall stresses in a water storage tank. A low-density polyethylene tank with six different aspect ratios (water level to tank radius) was tested using a shake table. A laminar box with sand represents a soil site to simulate Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI). Sine excitations with eight frequencies that cover the first free vibration frequency of the tank-water system were applied. Additionally, Ricker wavelet excitations of two different dominant frequencies were considered. The maximum stresses are compared with those using a nonlinear elastic spring-mass model. The results reveal that the coincidence between the excitation frequency and the free-vibration frequency of the soil-tank-water system increases the sloshing intensity and the rigid-like body motion of the system, amplifying the stress development considerably. The relationship between the excitation frequency and wall stresses is nonlinear and depends simultaneously on both sloshing and uplift. In most cases, the maximum stresses using the nonlinear elastic spring-mass model agree with those from the experiments.

  • The transformer is fabricated with two piezoelectric vibrator with the divided electrodes and adhesive insulator. We applied the electric input to the driving vibrator in parallel and connect the output voltage to the generating vibrator in series to the resistor load near its fundamental resonance frequency. Then we investigate output voltage in series twice as large as in parallal. Moreover we investigate the load characteristics at resonance frequencies under various resistor and the frequency characteristics near the resonance frequency under no load. Its equvalent circuit is derived from the Mason's model of a thickness-driven piezelectric vibrator. By its equevalent circuit, symbolic expressions for input impedances, voltage ratios, resonance frequencies, and bandwidths have been derived. The values calculated from those symbolic exprssions are shown to agree well with the measurement values.

  • In current study, natural frequency response of fiber metal laminated (FML) fibrous composite panels is optimized under different combination of the three classical boundary conditions using particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and finite strip method (FSM). The ply angles, numbers of layers, panel length/width ratios, edge conditions and thickness of metal sheets are chosen as design variables. The formulation of the panel is based on the classical laminated plate theory (CLPT), and numerical results are obtained by the semi-analytical finite strip method. The superiority of the PSO algorithm is demonstrated by comparing with the simple genetic algorithm.
