A fully coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical model is established to evaluate frost heave behaviour of saturated frost-susceptible soils. The method is based on mass conservation, energy conservation, and force equilibrium equations, which are fully coupled with each other. These equations consider various physical phenomena during one-dimensional soil freezing such as latent heat of phase change, thermal conductivity changes, pore water migration, and the accompanying mechanical deformation. Using the thermo-hydro-mechanical model, a sensitivity analysis study is conducted to examine the effects of the geotechnical parameters and external conditions on the amount of frost heave and frost heaving rate. According to the results of the sensitivity analysis, initial void ratio significantly affects each objective as an individual parameter, whereas soil particle thermal conductivity and temperature gradient affect frost heave behaviour to a greater degree when applied simultaneously. The factors considered in this study are the main factors affecting the frost heaving amount and rate, which may be used to determine the frostbite sensitivity of a new sample.

In this research, we used fly-ash and blast-furnace slag as substitute material of cement and fine aggregate, and we, through experiments, researched and analyzed the features of high-flowable concrete added high efficiency AE water reduction agent. The results are below. 1. Liquefaction generally presented high-slump flow value; on the other hand, partial segregation was observed in case of mixing proportion with 65 cm slump flow and above. This segregation was partially improved in accordance with mixing admixture. 2. Compressive strength according to mixing admixture and increasing mixing ratio of fly-ash were subject to be declined when it was initially cast-in, but its gap was improved when time was fully passed. 3. After mixing blast-furnace slag and fly-ash as substitute material, the result showed that the modulus of elasticity against freezing & melting was improved according to mixing blast-furnace slag and also increased in accordance with increasing pulverulent-body volume. 4. According to increasing the mixing volume of fly-ash, the durability factor was deteriorated because compressive strength became lower as well as air content was decreased when it was initially case-in. 5. The minimum air content to secure durability was 3.7%, for that reason, we had better secure admixture such as air entraining agent when cast-in high-flowable concrete.
Chemical admixture stabilization has been extensively used in both shallow and deep stabilization in order to improve inherent properties of the soil such as strength and deformation behavior. An increment in strength, a reduction in compressibility, an improvement of the swelling or squeezing characteristics and increasing the durability of soil are the main aims of the admixtures for soil stabilization. Recently, the various advanced cement stabilizer mixing technique was developed. Advanced cement stabilizer mixing technique is environmentally-friendly and has an excellent mixing property and outstanding mixing speed. In this study, to develop the rural road pavement technology using cement stabilizer, compaction and unconfined compression test were performed with various mixing ratio and two types of soil(clay and silty soil). And the freezing/thaw test and bending strength test performed to develop suitable cement stabilizer material for stabilization of rural road. Based on the test results, the liquid types of cement stabilizer material and silty soil mixture are most suitable for rural road construction and although the mixing ratio is low, cement stabilizer mixture is effective for durability of rural road surface layer.

This paper presents some research results on the shrinkage characteristics and frost resistance before and after cracking of FR-ECC(Fire Resistance-Engineered Cementitious Composite). Also, a waterstop performance and exfoliating resistance of multi-layer lining specimens using FR-ECC and flexural performance of beam member by repaired FR-ECC are estimated in this paper. Experimental results indicate that the plastic shrinkage crack and length change ratio of FR-ECC have been reduced as compared with that of the existing repair mortar, and that its crack resistance on the dry shrinkage is improved under the confining stress. As well as FR-ECC has been great in the frost resistance and its tensile properties under the cracked state have been not reduced by freezing and thawing reaction. In addition, beam member by repaired FR-ECC have been increased in the flexural properties such as initial crack moment, yeild moment, and its crack width has been controled in a stable by the frexural failure.
In this study, we examined the effect of a liposome-based extender (Optixcell) and a tris-citric egg-yolk extender (Triladyl) on the frozen-thawed spermatozoa characteristics and the calving rate. The percentages for the total motility of the frozen-thawed spermatozoa were similar in the Optixcell and Triladyl groups. However, among the motile spermatozoa with a straight line velocity (VSL) ${\geq}25{\mu}m/sec$, the curvilinear velocity (VCL, ${\mu}m/sec$), VSL (${\mu}m/sec$), average path velocity (VAP, ${\mu}m/sec$), amplitude of lateral head displacement (ALH, ${\mu}m$), beat cross frequency (BCF, Hz), and plasma membrane integrity of the frozen-thawed spermatozoa for the Optixcell group were significantly higher than those for the Triladyl group. Furthermore, the calving rate in the Optixcell group (79.0%) was higher than that of the Triladyl group (62.8%). However, the acrosomal membrane integrity of the frozen-thawed spermatozoa in the Optixcell and Triladyl groups was not significantly different. These results indicate that semen freezing with Optixcell improved the motility and plasma membrane integrity of frozen-thawed spermatozoa and the calving rate of Hanwoo cows (native Korean cattle). In conclusion, our results suggest that semen freezing with the liposome-based extender Optixcell is more efficient than with the tris-citric egg-yolk extender Triladyl for improved offspring production.
Liquid hydrogen (LH2) has a higher density than gaseous hydrogen, so it has high transport efficiency and can be stored at relatively low pressure. In order to use efficient bulk hydrogen in the industry, research for the LH2 supply system is needed. In the high-pressure hydrogen station based on LH2 currently being developed in Korea, a heat exchanger is used to heat up supercritical hydrogen at 700 bar and 60 K, which is pressurized by a cryogenic high-pressure pump, to gas hydrogen at 700 bar and 300 K. Accordingly, the heat exchanger used in the hydrogen station should consider the design of high-pressure tubes, miniaturization, and freezing prevention. A helical heat exchanger generates secondary flow due to the curvature characteristics of a curved tube and can be miniaturized compared to a straight one on the same heat transfer length. This paper evaluates the heat transfer performance through parametric study on the distance between coils, guide effect, and anti-icing design of helical heat exchanger. The helical heat exchanger has better heat transfer performance than the straight tube exchanger due to the influence of the secondary flow. When the distance between the coils is uniform, the heat transfer is enhanced. The guide between coils increases the heat transfer performance by increasing the heat transfer length of the shell side fluid. The freezing is observed around the inlet of distribution tube wall, and to solve this problem, an anti-icing structure and a modified operating condition are suggested.
This study is about the estimation of the mechanical properties of cement grout material using a magnetic field treated water instead of tap water. The water that passed through a magnetic system is called MFTW. Similar research indicates that 5% of cement dosage can be saved by decreasing bleeding of concrete and improving resistance to freezing. The reason why MFTW can improve characteristics of concrete can be explained by molecular structure of water. Magnetic force makes water clusters into single molecule or small ones. Hence, the activity of water is improved by the magnetic force. While hydration of cement particles is on progress, the MFTW can penetrate the core region of cement particles more easily. Therefore, the hydration can be carried out more efficiently and the compression strength of concrete is highly improved. The sample of the sodium silicate cement grout's homogel using the MFTW results in highly compressive strength increases in compressive strength approximately from 20% to 50%.
New strain needs to maintain desirable characteristics for long term when it was bred, but in lapse of time it degenerates into a bad condition. Therefore the influence of temperature on the viability and survival rates of Lentinula edodes strains were examined after cryopreservation. Also, liquid nitrogen preservation for L. edodes has been proved to be one of the most reliable method. However, a mechanical damage of strain is inevitable during cryopreservation of the fungus because the fungus is very sensitive to stress of cooling rate in the freezing process. So we tried to find out state change of L. edodes with a programmable freezer. L. edodes strains were preserved at $-20^{\circ}C$, $-80^{\circ}C$ and $-196^{\circ}C$ for 50 days. At $-20^{\circ}C$, its mycelial growth became extinct. When thawed, the growth of mycelia which were preserved at $-80^{\circ}C$ was fastest. Attempts were made to investigate viability of L. edodes strains after freezing at $-80^{\circ}C$ and $-196^{\circ}C$, respectively. As the result, more than 90% showed high survival rate of strains tested at $-80^{\circ}C$ and $-196^{\circ}C$. Mycelial growth between apical and basal parts of colony after freezing preservation for 50 days was compared. At apical and basal parts, the survival rates showed 100% at $-80^{\circ}C$, but 98% and 94% at $-196^{\circ}C$, respectively. We confirmed that the ice crystal formation temperatures of L. edodes strains were $-6.0^{\circ}C$ for Sanlim 1, $-5.5^{\circ}C$ for the Sanlim 2, $-4.0^{\circ}C$ for the Sanlim 3 and $-15.5^{\circ}C$ for the Sanzo 302. These results indicated that L. edodes strains showed completely different responses to the ice crystal formation. We knew the fact that even the same species, especially L. edodes, they displayed completely different responses to the same freezing condition. Also, this has nothing to do with the connection between temperature type and freezing point. And a protocol was tried to minimize state change of L. edodes strains using programmable freezer when they are frozen, but it was not effective on them.
The Characteristics of nocturnal temperature fields were analyzed to understand the factors of freezing-and-cold damages on orange orchards in Cheju Island. Temperatures were measured from January 7th through 27, 1995 at 25 sites in an area of 1x1.25$ extrm{km}^2$, Wasan-ri, Chochon-up, Pukcheju-kun located on the northeastern slope of Mt.Hanla. Several other weather elements such as wind and cloud were observed as supplementary data. Surface weather maps were also analyzed to clarify the influence of prevailing pressure patterns on the temperature fields. The vertical temperature profiles were obtained at the height from the ground up to 360 cm in 30 cm intervals at site 3, a frost hollow, and site 10 on the upper slope. The results show that freezing damages occured in the hollows, terrain depressions, rather than at the upper slope due to nocturnal radiation cooling as well as accumulation of cold airflow from Mt.Hanla. Windbreaks of densely planted Japanese ceders with stone-walls also roled as obstacles to the cold airflow in nights with Clear skies and light winds. The maximum intensity of temperature inversion in hollows, quasi-cold air lake, was 3.1$^{\circ}C$. Cold air from Mt.Hanla was trapped in the depressions up to a height of 90cm forming frost pocket. Man-made facilities such as shelterbelt or stone-wall which are built to prevent the penetration of cold north-westeries in winter aggravated the cold damage. The differance of daily minimum temperatures between before and behind shelterbelts was 2.$0^{\circ}C$. The man-made convection by smudgin which raised the temperatures up to 3.8$^{\circ}C$ can reduce the cold damage in the hellows.

As the customer's interest for sidewalk block in the street or apartment complex is increasing, the materials of block which had been a concrete block exclusively are varied to clay paver, native rock and wood etc. Especially, the sales volume of clay paver which is environment-friendly and ergonomic is dramatically increasing every year with two digits growth rate, however, many problems like "Edge Cracking" "Freezing Breakage" "Bending Breakage" "Joint Gap" are happening frequently within a couple of hours after installation due to the durabilities. Because of the characteristics of Ceramic products, clay pavers are very easy to be broken when they are bumped against each other. In addition, they are relatively fragile by a freezing expansion breakage when exposed to water due to hydrophilic property as well as the intensity and absorptance of the products are varied with small difference from the production process such as production equipment and process control. Therefore, it costs a lot of money to repair the breakdown unless production and installation is carried out according to the strict criteria of the quality control. In this study, the symptoms of breakdown frequently happened in clay paver are classified by each type and finally the solution for this problem in the production of brick, installation and criteria of quality control through compressive strength and absorptance test is suggested.
