Formulation and evaluation a finite element model for free vibration and buckling behaviours of functionally graded porous (FGP) beams

  • This paper addresses the finite element modeling of functionally graded porous (FGP) beams for free vibration and buckling behaviour cases. The formulated finite element is based on simple and efficient higher order shear deformation theory. The key feature of this formulation is that it deals with Euler-Bernoulli beam theory with only three unknowns without requiring any shear correction factor. In fact, the presented two-noded beam element has three degrees of freedom per node, and the discrete model guarantees the interelement continuity by using both C0 and C1 continuities for the displacement field and its first derivative shape functions, respectively. The weak form of the governing equations is obtained from the Hamilton principle of FGP beams to generate the elementary stiffness, geometric, and mass matrices. By deploying the isoparametric coordinate system, the derived elementary matrices are computed using the Gauss quadrature rule. To overcome the shear-locking phenomenon, the reduced integration technique is used for the shear strain energy. Furthermore, the effect of porosity distribution patterns on the free vibration and buckling behaviours of porous functionally graded beams in various parameters is investigated. The obtained results extend and improve those predicted previously by alternative existing theories, in which significant parameters such as material distribution, geometrical configuration, boundary conditions, and porosity distributions are considered and discussed in detailed numerical comparisons. Determining the impacts of these parameters on natural frequencies and critical buckling loads play an essential role in the manufacturing process of such materials and their related mechanical modeling in aerospace, nuclear, civil, and other structures.

  • The purpose of this study is to present the dwelling space by attaching or inserting the mobile space unit to the fixed building by providing the temporary dwelling space for those suffering from flood disaster, natural disaster or solitary old people or the space and program that the completed building in the city can not provide such as temporary events in the bridge, passage space, walking space for the handicapped, stores located between street blocks, and plaza. Therefore, this study was intended to investigate temporary dwelling space through the composition of space and the experiment of the applicability of the program through the methods of movement, folding, module, expansion and evolution of mobile space. An attempt was made to apply the concept of ‘mobile space’ to the dwelling space not only with a focus on the freedom of variable and changeable physical movement but also with a focus on the existence of the nomad and the way of thinking that bleaks away from a given value system and code, creates a new value and continues to move to a new domain. This study attempted to analyze how the concept of ‘mobile space’ has been developed in what form and method they have been applied and interpreted in the historical background. It attempted to resolve the concepts of movement and mobility through the experiment so that they might apply to the space of contemporary city. This study attempted to experiment this possibility using the mobile space unit and apply it.

A study on the private autonomies of the disputants in the process of conciliation (민사조정의 활성화와 사적자치)

  • Conciliation is one of the most effective ADR(alternative dispute resolution) which takes the place of civil procedure. It is achieved with disputants' independent will. The disputants negotiate each other, and make peaceful settlement. If a compromise is effected between the two, it regards the compromise as a judgement of the Supreme Court. This effect on the conciliation is afford a basis for the private autonomies. But nowadays, the practical use of the private autonomies is not thoroughgoing enough in our country. It is a matter of no uncommon occurrence for the member of a conciliation commission to form a conclusion about the dispute and to persuade the disputants to accept the conclusion. Even the judges have a tendency to conduct a conciliation like civil procedure. Under these circumstances, it's harsh to the disputants that a compromise in the conciliation has an effect like the judgement of the Supreme Court. So you should reconsider carefully the role or service of a conciliation commission. The role of a conciliation commission must be to guarantee an atmosphere of freedom, and for disputants to negotiate without restraint. So the members of a conciliation commission should make an offer the disputants the information on the members and proceedings of the conciliation. It will make the disputants have a firm belief that the members are fair and conciliation will be progressed in a fair. Moreover they have to notify the disputants of the estimated norms which is concerned in the dispute, too. It will facilitate the negotiation and compromise, and will justify claim preclusion(res judicata) which is based on Korean Civil Conciliation Law(Article 29) says that conciliation has the full force and effect of a civil judgement of the Supreme Court.

Smart System Identification of Super High-Rise Buildings using Limited Vibration Data during the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake

  • A method of smart system identification of super high-rise buildings is proposed in which super high-rise buildings are modeled by a shear-bending system. The method is aimed at finding the story shear and bending stiffnesses of a specific story only from the horizontal floor accelerations. The proposed method uses a set of closed-form expressions for the story shear and bending stiffnesses in terms of the limited floor accelerations and utilizes a reduced shear-bending system with the same number of elements as the observation points. A difficulty of prediction of an unstable specific function in a low frequency range can be overcome by introducing an ARX model and discussing its relation with the Taylor series expansion coefficients of a transfer function. It is demonstrated that the shear-bending system can simulate the vibration records with a reasonable accuracy. It is also shown that the vibration records at two super high-rise buildings during the 2011 Tohoku (Japan) earthquake can be simulated with the proposed method including a technique of inserting degrees of freedom between the vibration recording points. Finally it is discussed further that the time-varying identification of fundamental natural period and stiffnesses can be conducted by setting an appropriate duration of evaluation in the batch least-squares method.

Exaggeration Shown in Contemporary Knit Fashion (현대 니트 패션에 나타난 과장성)

  • This research aims to explicate how we reveal our identity and emphasize beauty in our passion for beauty. It also attempts to find out our sense of beauty in exaggeration of visual expressions. The purpose is to represent how the contemporary knit fashion is various and exaggerated in our modern fashion world, and also to give the direction of new knitwear designs through the visual analysis of exaggerated knit fashion. Literature research was done by studying reference books and magazines, leading papers and based on a dissertation thesis. This study collected 787 designer's works published in the world's big Four collections from the 2000 S/S to 2011 S/S, in 23 seasons during 12 years. In answer to 9 experts about the criteria of classification, 520 works were chosen and analyzed according to the standard of exaggerated knitwear. The result of the study is the followings: The type of exaggeration shown in contemporary knit fashion was classified in three categories; Enlarge exaggeration, reduce exaggeration and transform exaggeration. As a sub-category, enlarge exaggeration was classified into three categories; Volume expansion and the expansion by the material, gauge and larger composition application expansion. Reduce exaggeration appeared as mini-reduction, skinny-reduction and transform exaggeration was respectively classified into deformation of the shape and patterns. The characteristics of exaggeration shown in contemporary knit fashion appeared as the new formative sense. In terms of fuller sense and surface, using various materials, gauge, changes in the composition represented challenges for textiles. The exaggerated contemporary knitwear expressed sex appeal using tight-fitting effect. Contemporary knit fashion simplified the design by taking advantage of the strong elastic attributes. It showed the beauty of women, expressed variability and limitless knit characteristics beyond the conventional thinking. In addition, it has been well represented as a form of freedom, amusement and diversity.

Distributed Structural Analysis Algorithms for Large-Scale Structures based on PCG Algorithms (대형구조물의 분산구조해석을 위한 PCG 알고리즘)

  • In the process of structural design for large-scale structures with several thousands of degrees of freedom, a plethora of structural calculations with large amount of data storage are required to obtain the forces and displacements of the members. However, current computational environment with single microprocessor such as a personal computer or a workstation is not capable of generating a high-level of efficiency in structural analysis and design process for large-scale structures. In this paper, a high-performance parallel computing system interconnected by a network of personal computers is proposed for an efficient structural analysis. Two distributed structural analysis algorithms are developed in the form of distributed or parallel preconditioned conjugate gradient (DPCG) method. To enhance the performance of the developed distributed structural analysis algorithms, the number of communications and the size of data to be communicated are minimized. These algorithms are applied to the structural analyses of three large space structures as well as a 144-story tube-in-tube framed structure.

The therapeutic effect of relative satisfaction on pain treatment: focus on gobchuchum (a hunchback dance) of Ok-jin Gong

  • Ok-jin Gong's hunchback dance is considered to be a strange dance in Korea. However, there have been no reports of the effects of music and dance therapy as a pain treatment. The aim of this article is to argue that watching and listening to the hunchback dance of Ok-jin Gong may have significant effects as a form of pain treatment. The creator of this style of dance suspected that dance in general can be an outlet for our inner emotions. Her dance in this case has received critical and complimentary reviews as well. However she has been cited as the main culprit behind the destruction of traditional dance forms in the Korean dance world. Nonetheless, her bewitching stage presence attracted much attention. She satirized the feelings of the under privileged' through music and dance. We tend to feel somehow relative poverty and small in the presence of a rich and successful man. On the other hand, the artist felt that it is the public who would be relatively comforted and satisfied in the presence of the weak and handicapped. A free spirit that makes us forget pain is the very essence of her dancing. Her dance and music sound as if she sublimated her sadness and ugliness, changing it to happiness and beauty. She puts herself in a low position and spreads a sense of freedom and relief to the world. Hence, the author felt that innumerable people have been comforted in these ways by her dance.

Computational and Experimental Studies on Added Resistance of AFRAMAX-Class Tankers in Head Seas (선수파 중 AFRAMAX급 유조선의 부가저항에 대한 실험과 수치계산)

  • When a ship sails in a seaway, the resistance on a ship increases due to incident waves and winds. The magnitude of added resistance amounts to about 15–30% of a calm-water resistance. An accurate prediction of added resistance in waves, therefore, is essential to evaluate the performance of a ship in a real sea state and to design an optimum hull form from the viewpoint of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations such as Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI). The present study considers added resistance problem of AFRAMAX-class tankers with the conventional bow and Ax-bow shapes. Added resistance due to waves is successfully calculated using 1) a three-dimensional time-domain seakeeping computations based on a Rankine panel method (three-dimensional panel) and 2) a commercial CFD program (STAR-CCM+). In the hydrodynamic computations of a three-dimensional panel method, geometric nonlinearity is accounted for in Froude-Krylov and restoring forces using simple wave corrections over exact wet hull surface of the tankers. Furthermore, a CFD program is applied by performing fully nonlinear computation without using an analytical formula for added resistance or empirical values for the viscous effect. Numerical computations are validated through four degree-of-freedom model-scale seakeeping experiments in regular head waves at the deep towing tank of Hyundai Heavy Industries.

Development and Walking Pattern Generation of Biped Humanoid Robot (이족보행 휴머노이드 로봇의 개발과 보행패턴 생성)

  • As research on the practical use of robots has continued since the past, advancements into each field of society are being continuously tried in modern society, breaking bounds from the previous experimental environment. However, in order for robots to be applied to the real environment, the production cost, which is considered to be the biggest disadvantage of commercializing the existing robot platform, and the adaptability issue in working environments in terms of human standards must be considered. This paper proposes a robot of biped walking form, which conforms to the degree of freedom and the size of human beings. By replacing the encoder with a combined module of potentiometer, the high cost of production is reduced, and by adopting a modular design that is easy to replace parts, the maintenance cost of robots is reduced. Finally, stability was verified by applying a walking pattern to two dummy robots of different sizes and motor arrangements. In this paper, after developing the real biped walking robots, the performance and usability were verified through walking experiments and applying the walking pattern using the developed robots.

Analysis of Taste of Middle-aged Korean Men Based on Self-image and Fashion style (한국 중년 남성의 자기이미지와 패션스타일 유형에 따른 취향 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to define the tastes of middle-aged Korean men by analyzing their characteristics, such as self-image, and fashion style. This study was carried out by using the Q methodology for survey research. The results of this study are as follows; First, the self-images of middle-aged men were classified into 'comfortable, calm, neat, and gentle,' 'realistic, active, sociable, and familiar,' 'sensible, emotional, romantic, and rational,' 'refined, emotional, luxurious, and sophisticated,' and 'aggressive, sensible, realistic, and rational.' Second, by analyzing the congruity of clothing form, fashion accessory, and fashion color types, this study was classified into the following 10 fashion styles: 'modern classic,' 'sophisticated,' 'town casual,' 'traditional casual,' 'comfortable,' 'chic casual,' 'contemporary,' 'gentle classic,' 'classic sporty,' and 'soft classic.' Third, this study analyzed the self-images and fashion styles of the men, and produced the following personal tastes of middle-aged men: 'success-oriented,' 'ability possession,' 'internal stability-oriented,' 'freedom-oriented,' 'self-satisfaction,' 'individuality compromise,' 'emotional release,' 'stability-oriented,' 'practicability-oriented,' and 'youth effort' types. By combining those types with social dimensions, this study produced the following tastes of middle-aged men: 'stabilized traditions,' 'achievements with high sociality,' 'youthful individuality,' 'active self-realization,' and 'realistic, logical pursuit.' The results of this study can be used as a meaningful data for developing the marketing strategy, which reflects the middle-aged men's changed tastes.
