  • In this paper. boundary element method is applied to the analysis of nonlinear free surface wave. A particular concern is given to the treatment of the open boundaries at the in-flow boundary and out-flow boundary, which uses the mass-flux and energy-flux considering the continuity of fluid. By assuming the fluid to be inviscid and incompressible and the flow to be irrotational. the problem is formulated mathematically as a two-dimentional nonlinear problem in terms of a velocity potential. The equation(Laplace equation) and the boundary conditions are transformed into two boundary integral equations. Due to the nonlinearity of the problem. the incremental method is used for the numerical analysis. Numerical results obtained by the present boundary element method are compared with those obtained by the finite element method and also with experimental values.

  • In this study, flow characteristics around the hull form of KLNG are investigated by numerical simulations. The numerical simulations of the turbulent flows with the free surface around KLNG have been carried out at Froude number 0.1964 using the FLUENT 6.3 solver with Reynolds stress turbulence model. Several GEOSIM models are adopted to consider the scale effect attendant on Reynolds number. Furthermore, a full scale ship is calculated and the result is compared with the numerical results of GEOSIM models. The calculated results of GEOSIM models and the full scale ship are compared with the experiment data of MOERI towing tank test and Inha university towing tank test. Moreover, wake distribution on the propeller plane of the full scale ship is estimated using the numerical results of GEOSIM models. The prediction result is directly compared with the simulation result in full scale.

  • In order to analyze the characteristics of propeller exciting force, the hybrid grid is adopted and the numerical prediction of KCS ship model is performed for hull-propeller-rudder system by Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) method and volume of fluid (VOF) model. Firstly, the numerical simulation of hydrodynamics for bare hull at oblique state is carried out. The results show that with the increasing of the drift angle, the coefficients of resistance, side force and yaw moment are constantly increasing, and the bigger the drift angle, the worse the overall uniformity of propeller disk. Then, propeller bearing force for hull-propeller-rudder system in oblique flow is calculated. It is found that the propeller thrust and torque fluctuation coefficient peak in drift angle are greater than that in straight line navigation, and the negative drift angle is greater than the positive. The fluctuation peak variation law of coefficient of side force and bending moment are different due to various causes.

  • This paper addresses a method for numerical simulation in the pressing process of hot glass. Updated Lagrangian finite element formulations are employed for the flow and energy equations to accommodate moving meshes. The model is assumed axi-symmetric and creep flow is assumed due to the high viscosity. Commercial software ANSYS is used to solve the coupled flow and energy equations. Moving contact points as well as free surface during the pressing are effectively calculated and updated by utilizing API functions of CAD software Unigraphics. The mesh distortion problem near the wall is overcome by automatic remeshing, and the temperatures of the new mesh are conveniently interpolated by using a unique function of ANSYS. The developed model is applied to the pressing process of TV glasses. In conclusion, the presented method shows that the pressing process accompanying moving boundary can be simulated by effectively combining general purpose software without resorting to special dedicated codes.

  • The source and source/dipole distribution methods using 3-dimensional panel method have been widely used for ship motion analysis. When these methods are used, large errors in the predicted hydrodynamic coefficients are introduced around the irregular frequencies caused by the resonance of imaginary internal flow. Therefore, the irregular frequencies need to be removed for an accurate prediction of ship motion. This paper adopts 3-dimensional translating and oscillating Green function derived by Wu. The adaptive integration method, stretching transform and stationary phase method are used for the calculation of the calculation of Green function and the integral equation is derived by distributing the Green function n ship surface and inner free-surface. The condition of zero normal velocity, that is, wall condition on inner free-surface has been successfully used for the removal of irregular frequencies in oscillating problems. The calculations are carried out for series 60($C_B=0.7$) vessel and the results are compared with those of other theoretical analyses and experiment.

  • Plasma polymerized thin films have been deposited on Si(lOO) substrates at $25-400^{\circ}C$ using thiophene ($C_4H_4S$) precursor by plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (PACVD) method for low-dielectric device application. In order to compare physical properties of the as-grown thin films, the effects of the plasma power, gas flow ratio and deposition temperature on the dielectric constant and thermal stability were mainly studied. XRD and TED studies revealed that the as-grown thin films have highly oriented amorphous polymer structure. XPS data showed that the polymerized thin films that grown under different RF power and deposition temperature as well as different gas ratio of $Ar:H_2$ have different stoichiometric ratio of C and S compared with that of monomer, indicating a formation of mixture polymers. Moreover, we also realized that oxygen free and thermally stable polymer thin films could be grown at even $400^{\circ}C$. The results of SEM, AFM and TEM showed that the polymer films with smooth surface and sharp interface could be grown under various deposition conditions. From the electrical property measurements such as I-V and C-V characteristics, the minimum dielectric constant and the best leakage current were obtained to be about 3.22 and $10-11{\;}A/\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively.

  • The application of contra-rotating rotors for higher specific speed pump has been proposed in our studies, which is in principle effective for reducing the rotational speed and/or the pump size under the same specification of conventional axial flow pump. In the previous experiments of our prototype, the cavitation inception at the tip region of the rear rotor rather than that of the front rotor and the strong potential interaction from the suction surface of the rear rotor blade to the pressure surface of the front one were observed, indicating the possibility to further improve the pump performance by optimizing rotational speed combination between the two rotors. The present research aims at the design of rear rotor with lower rotational speed. Considering the fact that the incoming flow velocity defects at the tip region of the rear rotor, an integrated inflow model of 'forced vortex' and 'free vortex' is employed. The variation of maximum camber location from hub to tip as well as other related considerations are also taken into account for further performance improvement. The ideas cited above are separately or comprehensively applied in the design of three types of rear rotor, which are subsequently simulated in ANSYS CFX to evaluate the related pump performance and therefore the whole low speed design idea. Finally, the experimental validation is carried out on one type to offer further proofs for the availability of the whole design method.

  • The effects of electroless nickel immersion gold (ENIG) and organic solderability preservative (OSP) surface finishes on the in-situ intermetallics reaction and the electromigration (EM) reliability of Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu (SAC305) solder bump were systematically investigated. After as-bonded, $(Cu,Ni)_6Sn_5$ intermetallic compound (IMC) was formed at the interface of the ENIG surface finish at solder top side, while at the OSP surface finish at solder bottom side,$ Cu_6Sn_5$ and $Cu_3Sn$ IMCs were formed. Mean time to failure on SAC305 solder bump at $130^{\circ}C$ with a current density of $5.0{\times}10^3A/cm^2$ was 78.7 hrs. EM open failure was observed at bottom OSP surface finish by fast consumption of Cu atoms when electrons flow from bottom Cu substrate to solder. In-situ scanning electron microscope analysis showed that IMC growth rate of ENIG surface finish was much lower than that of the OSP surface finish. Therefore, EM reliability of ENIG surface finish was higher than that of OSP surface finish due to its superior barrier stability to IMC reaction.

  • Under the influence of non-uniform magnetic field, melt flow in steady state and oxygen concentration in unsteady state are numerically investigated. The strength of the applied characteristic magnetic fields are B=0.1T, 0.2T, and 0.3T, respectively. The buoyancy effects due to the crucible wall heating and the thermocapillary effects due to the surface tention at the free surface are suppressed differentially by the non-uniform magnetic fields. As the intensity of characteristic magnetic fields is increasing, the recirculation region in the meridional plane is moving toward the growing crystal, and is diminishing. The oxygen concentration on the growing surface of crystals is decreasing and the uniformity of the oxygen concentration is increasing as the intensity of the magnetic fields is increasing.

  • The development of pre-set wavelength G$\ddot{o}$rtler vortices are studied in the boundary-layer flows on concave surfaces of 1.0 and 2.0 m radius of curvature. The wavelengths of the vortices were pre-set by thin wires of 0.2 mm diameter placed 10 mm upstream and perpendicular to the concave surface leading edge. Velocity contours were obtained from velocity measurements using a single hot-wire anemometer probe. The most amplified or dominant wavelength is found to be 15 mm for free-stream velocity of 2.1 m/s and 3.0 m/s on the concave surface of R = 1 m and 2 m, respectively. The velocity contours in the cross-sectional planes at several streamwise locations show the growth and breakdown of the vortices. Three different regions can be identified based on the growth rate of the vortices. The occurrence of a secondary instability mode is also shown in the form of mushroom-like structures as a consequence of the non-linear growth of the G$\ddot{o}$rtler vortices. By pre-setting the vortex wavelength to be much larger and much smaller than the most amplified one, the splitting and merging of G$\ddot{o}$rtler vortices can be respectively observed.
