  • A penalty frame method is proposed for the coupled analysis of finite elements with independently modeled substructures. Although previously reported hybrid interface method by Aminpour et al (IJNME, Vol 38, 1995) is accurate and reliable, it requires non-conventional special solution algorithm such as multifrontal solver. In present study, an alternative method has been developed using penalty frame constraints, which results in positive symmetric global stiffness matrices. Thus the conventional skyline solver or band solver can be utilized in the solution routine, which makes the present method applicable in the environment of conventional finite element commercial software. Numerical examples show applicability of the present method.

  • The definition of the Dual system is that the total seismic force resistance is to be provided by the combination of the moment frame and the shear walls or braced frames in proportion to their stiffness and the moment frame shall be capable of resisting at least 25% of the design force in Korean Building Code 2005 (KBC 2005). But, the definition of moment frame is ambiguous whether the moment frame include the imaginary columns in the shear wall (Case I) or include only the columns outside the shear wall (Case II). 60-story RC building was designed as dual system for Case I and Case II, and the required strength and reinforcement are compared. Moment and axial capacity of the shear wall of Case II decreased about 5% due to the absence of the column in the shear wall. The requirement of upper and bottom reinforcement of slab in Case II increased 13% and 40%, respectively, when compared to those of Case I. The required longitudinal reinforcement in columns for Case II is about 1.5 times larger than that of Case I.

  • High-rise residential buildings in these days tend to adopt a building frame system as primary earthquake resisting structural system for some architectural reasons. But there exist several ambiguities in designing such building frame systems according to current codes, with regards to : the effective stiffness property of RC cracked section in static and dynamic analyses, analytical model to evaluate story drift ratio and, deformation compatibility requirements of frames. The comparative study for these issues by appling IBC 2000 and KBC 2005 to a typical building frame system shows that demands of member strength and story drift ratio can be different significantly depending on designer's interpretation and application of code requirements.

  • The natural period calculation equations specified in the current building code are empirical formulas that depend on height and material type of the structure. Building with the upper wall and lower frame type is a unique structure which composed of two different structural system This type of structure needs either the deep transfer girder or the thick transfer plate that brings the sudden change of stiffness and mass. Therefore the natural period equations recommended by the current code can not be applied directly. In this study the natural period of building with typical plan obtained by dynamci analysis is compared with that of various codes. Ad approximate estimation equation for the natural period of building with the upper wall and lower frame type obtained by regression analysis is recommended. by the current code can not be applied directly. • Recently, according to environmental regulations, the automobile industry has been conducting various research on the use of composite materials to increase fuel efficiency. However, there has not been much research on lightweight chassis components. Therefore, in this research, the purpose of this study is to apply composite materials to the sub-frame of chassis components to achieve equivalent levels of stiffness, strength, NVH performance and 50% lightweight compared to the steel sub-frame. First, the Natural frequency of steel and composite specimens was compared to the damping characteristics of composite materials. Then, in this study, the Lay-up Sequence was derived to maximize the stiffness and strength of the sub-frame by applying composite materials. And this lay-up Sequence is proposed to avoid heat shrinkage due to curing during manufacturing. This process was designed based on a FEM structural analysis, and a Natural frequency and frequency response function graph was confirmed based on a modal analysis. The prototype type composite sub-frame was manufactured based on the design and the F.E.M analysis was verified through a modal experiment. Furthermore, it was fitted to the actual vehicle to verify the natural frequency and the indoor noise vibration response, including idling and road noise. This result was confirmed to be equivalent to the steel sub-frame. Finally, the composite sub-frame weight was confirmed to be about 50% of the steel sub-frame.

  • Generally, the steel rigid frame has been analyzed using finite element analysis tools. While many efforts have been poured into the understanding and accurate prediction for the nonlinear behavior of the columns and beam-columns connections, the base of the columns are modeled as simply hinged or fixed. However, the base of the steel columns practically is neither fixed not hinged. It behaves as semi-rigid. In this paper, the supports of the columns we modeled as semi-rigid and the importance of such approach in moment-resisting columns is evaluated. Two typical buildings designed by the US specification are modeled and analyzed by the finite element based on stiffness method and flexibility method. The column bases of three-story buildings are modeled as rotational springs with a varying degree of stiffness and strength that simulates the semi-rigidity of the base. Depending on the degree of stiffness and strength, the semi-rigidity varies from the hinged to the fixed. Buildings with semi-rigid column bases behaves similarly to the building with fixed bases. It has been numerically observed through the pushover and nonlinear time history analyses that the decrease of the stiffness of the column base induces the rotational demand on the int air beams. an increase of rotation demands on the first store connections and lead to a soft-story mechanists Due often to the construction and environmental effects, undesired reduction of column base stiffness may cause an increase of rotation demands on the first store connections and lead to a soft-story mechanism.

  • In this study, a comparative analysis have been conducted to examine seismic reinforcement effect of a school building that is designed with a CBD (Channel Beam Damper) system supported by H-frame with existing non-seismic RC frame. As a result of experiment, seismic reinforcement specimen with CBD system showed hysteretic characteristics of a large ellipse with great energy dissipation ability and increased strength and stiffness, while non-seismic design specimen showed rapid reduction in strength and brittle shear failure at top and bottom of the left and right column. In addition, comparing the stiffness reduction between the two specimens, CBD system was effective in preventing the reduction of stiffness. Energy dissipation ability of specimen reinforced by CBD system was about 4.0 times higher than the non-reinforced specimen. Such enhancement in energy dissipation ability could be considered as the result of improved strength and deformation for further application in designing of seismic reinforcement.

  • Shear walls have high stiffness and strength; however, they lack energy dissipation and repairability. In this study, an innovative slotted shear wall featuring vertical slots and steel energy dissipation connectors was developed. The ductility and energy dissipation of the shear wall were improved, while sufficient bearing capacity and structural stiffness were retained. Furthermore, the slotted shear wall does not support vertical forces, and thus it does not have to be arranged continuously along the height of the structure, leading to a much free arrangement of the shear wall. A frame-slotted shear wall structure that combines the conventional frame structure and the innovative shear wall was developed. To investigate the ductility and hysteretic behavior of the slotted shear wall, finite element models of two walls with different steel connectors were built, and pushover and quasi-static analyses were conducted. Numerical analysis results indicated that the deformability and energy dissipation were guaranteed only if the steel connectors yielded before plastic hinges in the wall limbs were formed. Finally, a modified D-value method was proposed to estimate the bearing capacity and stiffness of the slotted shear wall. In this method, the wall limbs are analogous to columns and the connectors are analogous to beams. Results obtained from the modified D-value method were compared with those obtained from the finite element analysis. It was found that the internal force and stiffness estimated with the modified D-value method agreed well with those obtained from the finite element analysis.

  • The objective of this paper is to report the result of an experimental program conducted on the strengthening of nonductile RC frames by using external mesh reinforcement and plaster application. The main objective was to test an alternative strengthening technique for reinforced concrete buildings, which could be applied with minimum disturbance to the occupants. Generic specimen is two floors and one bay RC frame in 1/2 scales. The basic aim of tested strengthening techniques is to upgrade strength, ductility and stiffness of the member and/or the structural system. Six specimens, two of which were reference specimens and the remaining four of which had deficient steel detailing and poor concrete quality were strengthened and tested in an experimental program under cyclic loading. The parameters of the experimental study are mesh reinforcement ratio and plaster thickness of the infilled wall. The effects of the mesh reinforced plaster application for strengthening on behavior, strength, stiffness, failure mode and ductility of the specimens were investigated. Premature and unexpected failure mode has been observed at first and second specimens failed due to inadequate plaster thickness. Also third strengthened specimen failed due to inadequate lap splice of the external mesh reinforcement. The last modified specimen behaved satisfactorily with higher ultimate load carrying capacity. Externally reinforced infill wall composites improve seismic behavior by increasing lateral strength, lateral stiffness, and energy dissipation capacity of reinforced concrete buildings, and limit both structural and nonstructural damages caused by earthquakes.
