Forming of a silencer case was studied using a virtual tryout method. First, the appropriate blank shape was determined by cutting off the undeformed part of the rectangular blank. Then drawbeads were designed such that the formation of wrinkles on the shoulders and pipe connection can be prevented. Finally, the shape bead was designed such that fracture and formation of wrinkles around the pipe connection can be avoided. The prototype of the silencer case was manufactured in accordance with the conditions of the virtual tryout process. By comparing the formability of the prototype with the results of finite element analysis, it was found that the forming of the prototype agreed well with the results of analysis.

Based on detailed FE limit analyses, the present paper provides tractable approximations fer plastic limit pressure solutions fur axially through-wall-cracked pipe; axially (inner) surface-cracked pipe; circumferentially through-wall-cracked pipe; and circumferentially (inner) surface-cracked pipe. In particular, for surface crack problems, the effect of the crack shape, the semi-elliptical shape or the rectangular shape, on the limit pressure is quantified. Comparisons with existing analytical and empirical solutions show a large discrepancy in circumferential short through-wall cracks and in surface cracks (both axial and circumferential). Being based on detailed 3-D FE limit analysis, the present solutions are believed to be the most accurate, and thus to be valuable information not only for plastic collapse analysis of pressurised piping but also for estimating non-linear fracture mechanics parameters based on the reference stress approach.
Liquid phase sintered silicon carbides were obtained by sintering of $\alpha$-SiC and $\beta$-SiC powders as starting materials at 2173K and 2273K respectively. The SiCplatelet seeds of different sizes were obtained by a repeated ball milling and sedimentation. Their mean size (d50) were 2.217 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ 13.67 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 22.17${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ respectively 6wt%Al2O3-4 wt% Y2O3 was used as the sintering additives for the liquid phase sintering. The two silicon carbides had a bimodal microstructure consisting of small matrix grains and large platelike grains when the SiCplatelet seeds were added. In the case of the $\beta$-SiC the appreciable phase transformation occurred as sintering temperature increased from 2173K to 2273K and resulted in matrix shape change from equiaxed into platelike grains. In contrast there was no shape change for the $\alpha$-SiC. The size of large grains in the $\alpha$-SiC of large grains in the $\alpha$-SiC was larger than that of the large grains in the $\beta$-SiC These results suggested that the growth of the $\alpha$-SiCplatelet in the $\alpha$-SiC matrix was more favored than that of the $\alpha$-SiCplatelet in the $\beta$-SiC matix. The three point flexural strength decreased as the added seed size increased. Fracture toughness values of samples sintered at 2273K were higher than those of samples sintered at 2173K.

We studied on the nondestructive evaluation of the elastic wave signals of locally wall thinned straight pipe. Wavelet transform was applied for the time-frequency analysis of waveforms obtained by fracture wave detector due to the dropping steel ball. The time-frequency analysis provides time variation of each frequency component involved in a waveform, which makes it possible to evaluate the shape of local wall thinning at each frequency. In this study, comparison by wavelet transform of the AE signals and monotonic bending tests without internal pressure are conducted on 1.91 inch diameter full-scale carbon steel pipe specimens. As the results of tests, fracture behaviors could be shown by the characteristic of mechanical strength of locally wall thinned pipes and the waveforms could be evaluated for the integrity insurance of the piping system according to the length and depth range of the deffeted shape pipes in the real field.
Applicability of laser micro welding process to the fabrication of medical devices was investigated. Austenitic stainless steel wire (SUS304) was spot melted and crosswise welded, which is one of the most possible welding process for the fabrication of medical devices, by using a Nd-YAG laser. Effects of welding parameters on the microstructure, tensile strength and corrosion resistance were discussed. In the spot melting, melted metal width decreased with decreasing the input energy and pulse duration. Controlling the laser wave to reduce laser noise which occurred in the early stage of laser irradiation made reasonable welding condition wider in the welding condition of small pulse duration such as 2ms. The microstructure of the melted metal was a cellular dendrite structure and the cell size of the weld metal was about 0.5~3.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Tensile strength increased with the decrease of the melted metal width and reached to a maximum about 660MPa, which is comparable with that for the tempered base metal. Even by immersion test at 318K for 3600ks in quasi biological environment (0.9% NaCl), microstructure of the melted metal and tensile strength hardly changed from those for as melted material. In the crosswise welding, joints morphologies were classified into 3 types by the melting state of lower wire. Fracture load increased with input energy and melted area of lower wire, and reached to a maximum about 80N. However, when input energy was further increased and lower wire was fully melted, fracture load decreased due to the burn out of weld metal.
Mechanical properties of steel-concrete interface were evaluated on the basis of experimental observations. The properties included bond strength, unbounded and bonded friction angles, residual level of friction angle, mode I fracture energy, mode II bonded fracture energy and unbonded slip-friction energy under different levels of normal stress, and shape parameters to define geometrical shape of failure envelope. For this purpose, a typical type of constitutive model of describing steel-concrete interface behavior was presented based on a hyperbolic three-parameter Mohr-Coulomb type failure criterion. The constitutive model depicts the strong dependency of interface behavior on bonding condition of interface, bonded or unbounded. Values of the interface parameters were determined through interpretation of experimental results, geometry of failure envelope and sensitivity analysis. Nonlinear finite element analysis that incorporates steel-concrete interface as well as material nonlinearities of concrete and steel were performed to predict the experimental results.

Fracture mechanics analysis for cracked pipes is essential for applying the leak-before-break (LBB) concept to nuclear piping design. For LBB assessment, crack instability and leak rate should be predicted accurately for through-wall cracked pipes. In a nuclear piping system, elbows are connected with straight pipes by circumferential welding; this weld region is often considered a critical location. Hence, accurate crack assessment is necessary for cracks in the interface between elbows and straight pipes. In this study, the stress intensity factor (SIF) and elastic crack opening displacement (COD) were estimated through detailed 3D elastic finite element (FE) analyses. Based on the results, closed-form solutions of shape factors for calculating the SIFs and elastic CODs were proposed for circumferential through-wall cracks in the abovementioned interfaces under internal pressure. In addition, the effect of the elbow on shape factors was investigated by comparing the results with the existing solutions for a straight pipe.
Purpose: The majority of nasal bone fractures have been managed by routine procedure of closed reduction and intranasal packing. However, nasal packing can cause nasal injury, hypoxia and patient's discomfort. And, synechiae formation is a frequently occurred after the nasal surgery. Various methods are used to reduce the incidence of synechiae formation. The purpose of this study was to compare routine procedure and nasal packing with reverse "U" shaped silicone sheet with respect to postoperative nasal synechiae formation and final outcome. Methods: We analyzed the medical records of 100 patients with nasal bone fracture who were operated by closed reduction in the last one year. The silicone sheet was designed in reverse "U" fan - shape and inserted between the middle turbinate and the septal wall. Nasal packing was removed at two days after the operation, and silicone sheet was removed at 10 to 14 days. Results: Synechiae in the middle meatus developed in 2 of 75 patients. Although synechiae between the middle meatus and nasal septum occurred in patients, the patients did not complaint of any olfactory disturbance and nasal obstruction. Conclusion: The reverse "U" fan - shape silicone sheet caused less pain for patients and no significant differences in outcome were found. The results of this study suggest that insertion of silicone sheet between the middle meatus and septum can be a useful method in the prevention of intranasal synechiae formation. The reverse "U" silicone sheet is a good alternative for routine packing methods.
The use of composite restorative materials is established due to continuing improvements in the materials and restorative techniques. Composite resins are widely used for the restoration of cervical lesions because of esthetics, good physical properties and working time. There are several types of cavity design for class V composite resin filling, but inappropriate cavity form may affect bonding failure, microleakage and fracture during mastication. Cavity preparations for composite materials should be as conservative as possible. The extent of the preparation is usually determined by the size, shape, and location of the defect. The design of the cavity preparation to receive a composite restoration may vary depending on several factors. In this study, 5 types of class V cavity were prepared on each maxillary central incisor. The types are; 1) V-shape, 2) round(U) shape, 3) box form, 4) box form with incisal bevel and 5) box form with incisal bevel and grooves for axial line angles. After restoration, in order to observe the concentration of stress at bonding surfaces of teeth and restorations, developing a 2-dimensional finite element model of labiopalatal section in tooth, surrounding bone, periodontal ligament and gingiva, based on the measurements by Wheeler, loading force from direction of 45 degrees from lingual side near the incisal edge was applied. This study analysed Von Mises stress with SuperSap finite element analysis program(Algor Interactive System, Inc.). The results were as follows : 1. Stress concentration was prevalent at tooth-resin bonding surface of cervical side on each model. 2. In model 2 without line angle, stress was distributed evenly. 3. Preparing bevel eliminated stress concentration much or less at line angle. 4. Model with round-shape distributed stress concentration more evenly than box-type model with sharp line angle, therefore decreased possibility of fracture. 5. Adding grooves to line angles had no effect of decreasing stress concentration to the area.

The purpose of this study was to compare the stress distributions of NiTi rotary instruments based on their cross-sectional geometries of triangular shape-based cross-sectional design, S-shaped cross-sectional design and modified rectangular shape-based one using 3D FE models. NiTi rotary files of S-shaped and modified rectangular design of cross-section such as Mtwo or NRT showed larger stress change while file rotation during simulated shaping. The stress of files with rectangular cross-section design such as Mtwo, NRT was distributed as an intermittent pattern along the long axis of file. On the other hand, the stress of files with triangular cross-section design was distributed continuously. When the residual stresses which could increase the risk of file fatigue fracture were analyzed after their withdrawal. the NRT and Mtwo model also presented higher residual stresses. From this result, it can be inferred that S-shaped and modified rectangular shape-based files were more susceptible to file fracture than the files having triangular shape-based one.
