Although corn (Zea mays L.) hybrids are now widely grown as a silage crop in Korea, but agronomic data and silage quality of the corn hybrids produced from farmer's fields have not been published. Therefore, a research survey assessing forage yield and quality of the corn hybrids was conducted at 8 and 13 dairy farms in 1988 and 1989, respectively. in Yoju and Ichon. Kyeongi Province. In 1988, percent ear bearing plants, plant population, ear/total dry matter ratio. percent dry matter and dry matter yield of corn hybrids were 75.3%, 75,826 plants/ha, 38.3%, 23.8% and 12,661 kg/ha. respectively. compared with corresponding values of 79.5%. 79,981 plants/ha, 41.1%. 20.7% and 16.152 kg/ha in 1989, but 11.9% of rice black streaked dwarf virus (RBSDV) was recorded in 1989. The Flieg's score of corn silage made by dairy farmers ranged from 70 to 100 and averaged 91. The corn silage produced from dairy farms was characterized as a high quality grade. Survey data indicated that late maturing types of corn hybrids with a higher plant population were grown at farmer's fields. As a result, the performances of the corn hybrids produced by farmers were much lower than those of research institutes. Therefore, dairy farmers in the mid-northern regions of Korea should grow more early maturing corn hybrids and use much lower plant population than those of the present.

In order to investigate rice stem proteome in response to heat stress, rice plants were subjected to heat treatment at 42$^{\circ}C$ and total soluble proteins were extracted from stem tissues, and were fractionated with 15% PEG (poly ethylene glycol) and separated by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-DE). After staining of 2-DE gels, 46 of differentially expressed proteins were extracted, digested by trypsin, and subjected to matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) analysis. Proteins were identified through database search by using peptide mass fingerprints. Among them, 10 proteins were successfully identified. Seven proteins were up- and 3 proteins were down-regulated, respectively. These proteins are involved in energy and metabolism, redox homeostasis, and mitochondrial small heat shock proteins. The identification of some novel proteins in the heat stress response provides new insights that can lead to a better understanding of the molecular basis of heat-sensitivity in plants, and also useful to molecular breeding of thermotolerant forage crops.
Benzobicyclon induces phytotoxicity to Tongil type rice, although it is an efficient herbicide in paddy. This study was performed to figure out the benzobicyclon-induced phytotoxicity responses of whole crop forage rice genotypes that have the genetic background similar to Tongil type rice, under wet-seeded and transplanted conditions. Mogwoo demonstrated whitening symptom at all the temperatures in both wet-seeding and transplanting by the application of standard and double rates of benzobicyclon. Nokyang, Mogyang and Suweon560 exhibited no or negligible whitening and their plant heights were not reduced at standard rate of benzobicyclon. But in double rate application in wet-seeding, the three genotypes showed 0-8% of white plants at all temperature treatments and reduction in plant height was comparatively larger at $27^{\circ}C$. In transplanting, the double rate application of benzobicyclon at 24 and $27^{\circ}C$ induced 0-32% of whitening plants depending on genotypes while no whitening plants were observed at 18 and $21^{\circ}C$ in all genotypes. Reduction in biomass by double rate of benzobicyclon at 24 and $27^{\circ}C$ was greater than at 18 and $21^{\circ}C$. It is concluded that Mogwoo is extremely sensitive to benzobicyclon and Nokyang, Mogyang and Suweon560 are tolerant to the standard rate of benzobicyclon.

Several regenerated plants were obtained from anther culture of the hybrid lines of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) X Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.). When the anthers of the hybrid plants were incubated for 20 days on callus induction medium, MS medium containing 30 g/$\ell$ of sucrose, 2 mg/$\ell$ of NAA and 1 mg/$\ell$ of kinetin, their calli were induced. The mean ratio of callus induction was 11.6 percent, and the mean of callus weight was 9.1 mg/callus/anther. When the calli of the hybrid plants were incubated for 50 days on plant regeneration medium, MS medium containing 30 g/$\ell$ of sucrose, 1 mg/$\ell$ of NAA and 2 mg/$\ell$ of kinetin, the hybrid plants were regenerated. The mean ratio of plant regeneration was 27.1 percent and line Hyb-1 showed highest regenerabillity with the frequency of 30.2 percent.

Shoot morphological characteristics were affected by plant population densities in alfalfa. Shoots per plant, yield per shoot, yield per plant, and stem diameter increased with decreasing alfalfa population density. Winter survival was maximized at a plant population of $45plants\;m^{-2}$ or less. The grams of TNC per root increased as the stand density decreased. The lowest LT 50 occurred at the lowest stand density ($16plants\;m^{-2}$ having 25 cm plant spacing) and the highest LT 50 was attained at the highest stand density($494plants\;m^{-2}$ having 4.5 cm plant spacing). There were no differences in shoot morphology, winter survival, and cold hardiness in between 'Algonquin'and 'Vernal'. From this study, high stand density of alfalfa ($278plants\;m^{-2}$ or more) appears to be of little advantage compared to low stand density in terms of winter survival and cold hardiness.

There are differences in opinion as to whether nitrogen fertilizer should be used when establishing alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). Various reports show that under a hot environment, rhizobia (Rhizobium meliloti) are not as effective in fixing atmospheric nitrogen as they are under moderate temperatures. It is also believed that the addition of nitrogen fertilizer inhibits nodulation of alfalfa seedlings. A replicated experiment was conducted under controlled environmental conditions at the University of Nevada-Reno, Reno, Nevada, USA, to determine the effects of nitrogen application on seedling growth and nodulation of alfalfa grown in a hot environment. Sterile sand was used as the growing media to which a complete nutrient solution minus nitrogen was applied volumetrically to each pot daily. In addition, half of the pots received NH4-$NO_3$, at the rate of 11.2 kg per ha at seeding and at two and four weeks after planting giving a total nitrogen application rate of 33.6 kg per ha during the seven-week experimental period. Rhizobia inoculant (R-12) consisted of a mixture of strains 171-15a, 1682c and 80 PI 265 of (Rhizobium meliloti). Inoculant was applied to the seeds prior to planting and to the sand media at two and four weeks after seeding. Twenty seeds were planted in pots 14.0 cm in diameter and 11.5 cm deep. Plants were thinned to ten plants per pot after emergence and were grown in a controlled environment chamber with a 16-hour light period. Soil temperature at 6 cm depth ranged from 17.4^{\circ}C.$ to 31.1^{\circ}C.$ and had a daily mean of 26.5^{\circ}C.$. Plants were harvested at weekly intervals for seven weeks. Root, shoot and total length, dry weight, volume and number of nodules per plant were determined. Root, shoot, and total length were greater in seedlings grown in soil where nigrogen was applied than that grown in soil to which no nitrogen was applied. The average size of the seedlings as determined by volume and weight was more than two times greater where plants were fertilized with nitrogen. Nodule number per seedling was also greater when nitrogen was applied compared to those which received no nitrogen. The differences were greater as the plants became older. The rhizobia did not fix enough nitrogen for adequate growth of seedlings. This is probably due to high temperature growing conditions that caused the rhizobia to become relatively ineffective as compared to cooler growing conditions. Data suggests it would be desirable to apply nitrogen at seeding when alfalfa is established under hot conditions that occur in mid- or late summer.

This experiment was carried out to identify the main pathogens infected with Piper sudangrass and to evaluate the qualitative and quantitative damage of the plants infected with leaf blight (Helminthosporium turcicum PASS) under different levels of nitrogen fertilizer (20, 30 and 40 kg/10a). The experiment was design as a randomized block design with 4 replications at experimental field of Livestock Experiment Station in Suweon, 1984. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The main fungi isolated from sudangrass were identified as Helminthoporium turcicum and Collectotricum graminicolum, but 1 species fungus was not identified. 2. Leaf blight was first found on June 20 and appeared extremely in the regrowth plants from July to September. The rate of attack was associated with increasing of nitrogen fertilization (P<0.01). 3. Fresh and dry matter yields were as much as 47 and 38 percentage lower in leaf blight infected plants (disease severity: V) than those of no visible infection. 4. Concentrations of crude fat and crude protein were decreased in the plants infected with Helminthosporium leaf blight, but lignin content was increased. Dry matter and organic matter digestibility of the plants were negative correlated with the infection of leaf blight(P<0.01).

To develop transgenic birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) plants tolerant to environmental stress, Arabidopsis NDPK gene (AtNDPK) was introduced into birdsfoot trefoil plants using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation and expressed powerfully under the control of the SWPA2 promoter. The expression vector, pCAMBIA2300 was used for introduction of AtNDPK gene into birdsfoot trefoil plants. The transformed calli were selected on kanamycin containing medium and then regenerated. The transformed birdsfoot trefoil plants were cultivated fur 4 months on BOi2Y medium. Genomic DNA PCR and Southern blot analysis confirmed the incorporation of AtNDPK into the birdsfoot trefoil genome.

To investigate the physiological effects of mycorrhizal colonization on drought stress tolerance in white clover, the responses of leaf water potential (${\Psi}_{PL}$), relative water content (RWC), leaf dry mass, photosynthesis rate, transpiration, stomatal conductance, proline and ammonia were assessed periodically during 7 days in non-AM and AM plants under wellwatered or drought-stressed conditions. Under well-watered conditions, the examined parameters were not significantly changed or very little affected by AM symbiosis. Drought decreased water potential, relative water content, photosynthesis rate, transpiration and stomatal con ductance by 68.6%, 22.7%, 97.7%, 83.9% and 84.9%, respectively, in non-AM plants, meanwhile 46.8%, 13.4%, 50.3%, 44.8% and 54.7%, respectively, in AM plants. In addition, drought increased ammonia and proline by 31.8% and 162%, respectively, in non-AM plants, while 20.9% and 76.9%, respectively, in AM plants. These results clearly showed that mycorrhizal colonization significantly relieved the responses of physiological parameters to drought stress in white clover.
To examine the potentiality of grassland dominated with turf-type grasses, which are mainly used for the establishment of green spaces, forage production and its utilization as forage resources, dry matter yield and forage quality of three different turf-type mixtures were estimated throughout three consecutive experimental years. According to the experiment, the mean of dry matter(DM) yield, chemical composition, DM digestibility, crude protein dry matter(CPDM) and digestible dry matter(DDM) yield was not significantly different among species(p > 0.05) over three experimental years. Botanical composition of three dominant species(tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass) was 42, 35 and 28%, respectively, in three mixtures at the last cutting(6th) in 2001. The botanical composition of three dominated species such as tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass was maintained 84% of the total plants in all types of mixtures. Therefore, It is observed that the mixture types did not closely affect the botanical composition. But botanical composition of the other species such as redtop(8%) and creeping bentgrass(6${\sim}$7%) was low. Especially, that of red fescue was the least(1${\sim}$2%) of all mixed species. As mentioned above, any difference was not observed in DM yields, forage quality and botanical composition among mixture types. Therefore, any types of mixtures can be used as public green spaces like school ground areas or river-sides, and as forage resources additionally.
