Bottom ash from a coal-fired power plant is usually landfilled to a nearby site, which causes a growing environmental concern and increased operating costs. One way of recycling the bottom ash is to produce light-weight aggregate (LWA) using a rotary kiln. This study investigated the temperature profiles of raw LWA particles in a rotary kiln to identify the range of operating conditions appropriate for ideal bloating. For this purpose, a new simulation method was developed to integrate a 1-dimensional model for the bed of LWA particles and the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for the fuel combustion and gas flow. The temperature of LWA particles was found very sensitive to the changes in the air preheating temperature and excess air ratio. Therefore, an accurate control of the operation parameters was essential to achieve the bloating of LWA particles without excessive sintering or melting.
The scour phenomenon involves the erosive potential of flowing water and the relative ability of the soil to resist erosion. The scour phenomenon in cohesive soils is much different from that in non-cohesive soils. Granular soils resist erosion by their buoyant weight and the friction between the particles. The soil particles are dislodged individually from the bed under the action of the eroding fluid. Scour in cohesive soils is much slower and more dependent on soil properties than that in non-cohesive soils. Therefore the analysis models for estimating erosion characteristics of cohesive soils should consider not only flowing water but also the relative ability of the soil to resist erosion. In this study, erosion characteristics for the clay-silt mixed soil will be analyzed as a fundamental study for development of bridge scour analysis and design system considering scour resistance capacity of a soil. For this analysis, the relationship between scour characteristics and soil properties was evaluated through scour rate test with Kaolinite samples remolded using various loading and contents of silt.
Our patient was a 2.3 kg, male of 33 weeks gestation and spontaneous vaginal delivery. Copious salivary secretion, mild aspiration pneumonia episode due to tracheoesophageal fistula and intermittent cyanotic appearance due to hypoxia were noted shortly after birth. Head up position, frequent upper pouch suction, and adequate fluid and antibiotic therapy were done in incubator. Combined Chest and abdominal film was revealed gas in the stomach and an haziness in right chest with mediastinal shift to the right side. Esophagogram revealed markedly dilated proximal esophagus as blind pouch, and Two dimensional echocardiography showed the Ventricular Septal Defect. The conclusion was congenital esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula, Vogt-Gross type C, Waterston Risk Category B. Surgical correction with Beardmore anastomosis was performed extrapleurally through 3rd rib bed after the cannulation of umbilical vein and preliminary gastrostomy. The fistula was closed by triple ligation and the upper pouch was then brought down to the presenting surface of the lower esophageal segment that incised, and end to side anastomosis was underwent using interrupt suture placed through the full thickness of both upper pouch and lower esophageal segment. The postoperative patient was well tolerated and recovered uneventfully, permitted feeding on 7th postoperative day after esophagogram.
3D printing AM processes have advantages in complex shapes, customized fabrication and prototype development stage. However, due to various parameters based on both the machine and the material, the AM process can produce finished output after several trials and errors in the initial stage. As such, minimizing or optimizing negative factors for various parameters of the 3D printing AM process could be a solution to reduce the trial-and-error failures in the early stages of such an AM process. In addition, this can be largely solved through software simulation in the preprocessing process of 3D printing AM process. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate a simulation technology for the AM software, especially Ansys Inc. The metal 3D printing AM process, the AM process simulation software, and the AM process simulation processor were examined. Through this study, it will be helpful to understand 3D printing AM process and AM process simulation processor.
Experiments were performed to measure the critical heat flux (CHF) on a vertical surface abutting a coarse packed bed of spherical particles. This geometry is representative of a CANDU reactor calandria tubesheet facing the end shield cavity during the in-vessel retention (IVR) phase of a severe accident. Deionized light water was used as the working fluid. Low carbon steel shielding balls with diameters ranging from 6.4 to 12.7 mm were used, allowing for the development of an empirical correlation of CHF as a function of shielding ball diameter. Previously published data is used to develop a more comprehensive empirical correlation accounting for the impacts of both shielding ball diameter and heating surface height. Tests using borosilicate shielding balls demonstrated that the dependence of CHF on shielding ball thermal conductivity is insignificant. The deposition of iron oxide particles transported from shielding balls to the heating surface is verified to increase CHF non-trivially. The results presented in this paper improve the state of the knowledge base permitting quantitative prediction of CHF in the CANDU end shield, refining our ability to assess the feasibility of IVR. The findings clarify the mechanisms governing CHF in this scenario, permitting identification of potential future research directions.

A novel steel-pipe energy pile is introduced, in which the deformed rebars for main reinforcing are replaced with steel pipes in a large diameter cast-in-place energy pile. Here, the steel pipes act as not only reinforcements but also heat exchangers by circulating the working fluid through the hollow hole in the steel pipes. Under this concept, the steel-pipe energy pile can serve a role of supporting main structures and exchanging heat with surrounding mediums without installing additional heat exchange pipes. In this study, the steel-pipe energy pile was constructed in a test bed considering the material properties of steel pipes and the subsoil investigation. Then, the thermal performance test (TPT) in cooling condition was conducted in the constructed energy pile to investigate thermal performance. In addition, the thermal performance of the steel-pipe energy pile was compared with that of the conventional large diameter cast-in-place energy pile to evaluate its applicability. As a result, the steel-pipe energy pile showed 11% higher thermal performance than the conventional energy pile along with much simpler construction processes.
Fluid muds commonly occur in estuarine environments, but their ancient examples have rarely been studied in terms of depositional characteristics and processes. Cores of estuarine channel deposits of the Early Cretaceous McMurray Formation, Alberta, Canada show various mudstone layers that possess depositional characteristics of high clay-concentration flows. These mudstone layers are examined in detail through microscopic observation of thin sections and classified into three microfacies (<1 to 25 mm thick) on the basis of sedimentary texture and structures. Structureless mudstone (Microfacies 1) consists mainly of clay particles and contains randomly dispersed coarser grains (coarse silt to fine sand). This microfacies is interpreted as being deposited by cohesive mud flows, i.e., fluid muds, which possessed sufficient strength to support suspended coarser grains (quasi-laminar plug flow). Silt-streaked mudstone (Microfacies 2) mainly comprises mudstone with dispersed coarse grains and includes very thin, discontinuous silt streaks of coarse-silt to very-fine-sand grains. The texture similar to Microfacies 1 indicates that Microfacies 2 was also deposited by cohesive fluid muds. The silt streaks are, however, suggestive of the presence of intermittent weak turbulence under the plug (upper transitional plug flow). Heterolithic laminated mudstone (Microfacies 3) is characterized by alternation of relatively thick silt laminae and much thinner clay laminae. It is either parallel-laminated or low-angle cross-laminated, occasionally showing low-amplitude ripple forms. The heterolithic laminae are interpreted as the results of shear sorting in the basal turbulent zone under a cohesive plug. They may represent low-amplitude bed-waves formed under lower transitional plug flows. These three microfacies reflect a range of flow phases of fluid muds, which change with flow velocities and suspended mud concentrations. The results of this study provide important knowledge to recognize fluid-mud deposits in ancient sequences and to better understand depositional processes of mudstones.
Gold mineralization of Samjeong and Yongjang gold mines in Uichang area shows characteristics of Bonanza-type gold deposits. Ores are mainly developed along the contact parts between quartz vein and arkosic sandstone beds(Fe-rich bed) in sedimentary rock. Electrum, silver sulfide and sulfate minerals are mainly in the ores. On the other hand, gold mineralization is less developed in cherty rock and andesitic rock than arkosic sandstone. The study highlights characteristics of gold precipitation in the deposit on the basis of numerical modelling of the reactions between the assumed hydrothermal ore fluids with multicomponent heterogeneous equilibrium calculations. Aqueous species, gases and minerals, containing electrum are included in the calculations. The reaction result between hydrothermal ore fluids and arkosic sandstone show that pH increasing in the ore-forming fluid would trigger precipitation of quartz, chlorite, sericite, chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, electrum, actinolite and feldspar. The numerical modelling also illustrates the drastic increase of pH and desulfidation lead to precipitation of electrum. Ag/Au ratios in the ore vary with pH conditions and subsequently precipitation of silver-bearing sulfides such as acanthite and polybasite. The modelling of the reaction between andesitic rock and ore-forming fluid shows that mineral assemblages of the case are analogous to ones of the reaction between arkosic sandstone and fluid except the latter has little portion of electrum. The abovementioned modelling results suggest that gold-silver mineralization is bounded by host rocks at the study area.
Active carbon which has the smallest bulk and wet density was found as the best support media among 4 different kinds of materials(celite, natural zeolite, Pusuk stone, active carbon) to make a proper fluidized-bed with small energy consumption. Its minimum and optimum fluidization velocity were found as 0.03cm/sec and 0.25cm/sec, respectively. As organic loading rate for methane fermentation was increased, CODcr removal efficiencies of all the media were decreased. But, CODcr, removal efficiencies of active carbon was maintained more than 90% in this experimental range of the organic loading rate. Larger amount of microorganism was adsorbed on the active carbon which has very high specific surface area. At the organic loading rate of 16g CODcr,/l day, its adsorbed cell mass was 157mg/g. Comparing natural zeolite with roast celite, adsorbed cell mass did not increase in proportion to specific surface area of the media. Even though roast celite has the same specific surface area as the Pusuk stone, its organic removal ability was superior to that of the Pusuk stone, which explains that the relatively great surface roughness and the positive surface charge are important for cell adsorption. It was concluded that the support media for anaerobic fluidized reactor should have small wet density and small fuidization velocity, if possible, in order to increase cell adsorption by reducing the fluid shear stress.

An energy pile is one of the novel ground heat exchangers (GHEX's) that is a economical alternative to the conventional closed-loop vertical GHEX. The combined system of both a structural foundation and a GHEX contains a heat exchange pipe inside the pile foundation and allows a working fluid circulating through the pipe, inducing heat exchange with the ground formation. In this paper, a group of energy piles equipped with parallel U-type (5, 8 and 10 pairs) heat exchange pipes was constructed in a test-bed by fabricating in large-diameter cast-in-place concrete piles. In addition, a closed-loop vertical GHEX with 30m depth was constructed nearby to conduct in-situ thermal response tests (TRTs) and to compare with the thermal performance of the cast-in-place energy piles. A series of thermal performance tests was carried out with application of an artificial cooling and heating load to evaluate the heat exchange rate of energy piles. The applicability of cast-in-place energy piles was evaluated by comparing the relative heat exchange efficiency and heat exchange rate with preceding studies. Finally, it is concluded that the cast-in-place energy piles constructed in the test-bed demonstrate effective and stable thermal performance compared with the other types of GHEX.
