The Visualization of the Flow Field through Ship's Propulsion Mechanism of Weis-Fogh Type using the PIV

  • The Flow fields of a ship's propulsion mechanism of Weis-Fogh type were investigated by the PIV. Velocity vectors and velocity profiles around the operating and stationary wings were observed at opening angles of ${\alpha}=15^{\circ} and $30^{\circ}$, velocity ratios of V/U=$0.5{\sim}1.5$ and Reynolds number of Re=$0.52{\times}10^4{\sim}1.0{\times}10^4$. As the results the fluid between wing and wall was inhaled in the opening stage and was jet in the closing stage. The wing in the translating stage accelerated the fluid in the channel. And the flow fields of this propulsion mechanism were unsteady and complex, but those were clarified by flow visualization using the PIV.

  • Analytical model is derived for the far-field acoustic radiation from machinery installed inside cylindrical shell. The analytical model includes the effect of fluid loading and interactions between periodic ring supports. Transmitted force from machine to a shell can be different by the impedance of shell. In this paper the transmitted force from machinery to a infinite shell through vibration isolator is considered by the impedance of shell. The effect of the shell impedance for acoustic radiation is investigated.

Damping Performance Analysis of Electro-Rheological Squeeze Film Damper Sealed with Slotted Rings (슬롯 링을 장착한 전기유변 스퀴즈 필름 댐퍼의 감쇠성능 해석)

  • The present paper proposes a new type of an electro-rheological squeeze film damper (ER SFD) of which the damping capacity can be controlled by the application of electric field. The new ER .SFD- is sealed with slotted rings having electrodes at the inside of the constant gap. The ER SFD can provent the problem of electric short which might be occurred in a previous ER SFD. Reynolds lubrication equation for a Newtonian fluid and the end leakage equation for ER fluids are numerically solved to get the pressure distributions and the damping coefficients of the ER SFD. The results show that the damping coefficients greatly increase with increasing the yield shear stress of ER fluid. In addition, the unbalance response analysis of a flexible rotor supported on the new ER SFD implies that the rotor system can be operated with the minimum of rotor amplitude and force transmissibility by controlling the yield shear stress of ER fluids properly.

Formation of Coherent Vortices in Late Wake Downstream of an Object in Weakly Stratified Fluid (약한 밀도 층상류에서 발생하는 물체 후류의 잔류와 응집 와류의 형성)

  • Decades of studies of geophysical flow have unveiled that the flow downstream of obstacles in stratified flow consists of attached wake and strong gravity waves, or separated, fluctuating wake and persistent late wakes. Among unique and interesting characteristics of the stratified flow past obstacles is the generation of coherent vortex in the late wake far downstream of the object. Unlike in homogeneous fluid, the flow field downstream self-develops coherent vortex even after diminishing of the near wake, no matter how small the stratification is. This paper present a computational approach to simulate the generation of the coherent vortex structure in the late wake of a moving sphere submerged in weakly stratified fluid. The results are in consistent with several experimental observations and the vortex stretching mechanism is employed to explain the process of coherence.

  • ER clutch is a device using ER fluid, so called "intelligent material" and is a power transmission system controlled with electric field strength. In this paper(Part III), the behavior of ER clutch under proper conditions was investigated experimentally and compared to theoretical analyses developed from Part I, II. Considering the optimum design concept proposed from Part I, the concentric cylinder type of ER clutch was designed and the experimental apparatus for the performance test was constructed. The comparisons made indicated that the power transmission model of ER clutch and the temperature rise model of ER fluid developed from Part I, II were acceptable for engineering design calculations.culations.

  • This paper presents the position control of a double-rod cylinder system activated by an electrotheological(ER) valve unit. Following the composition of a silicone oil-based ER fluid, theological properties of the ER fluid are experimentally tested as a function of imposed electric fields to determine appropriate design parameters of the ER valve. The ER valves are then designed and manufactured. Subsequently, the pressure drop of the ER valve is evaluated with respect to the intensity of the electric field. Four ER valves bridge-cylinder system is formulated, and the governing equations for the system are derived. A neural network control scheme is then synthesized to perform the position control of the cylinder system. Tracking control responses are experimentally evaluated and presented in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control system.

Hall Effect on Unsteady Couette Flow. with Heat Transfer Under Exponential Decaying Pressure Gradient

  • The unsteady Couette flow of an electrically conducting, V1SCOUS, incompressible fluid bounded by two parallel non-conducting porous plates is studied with heat transfer taking the Hall effect into consideration. An external uniform magnetic field and a uniform suction and injection are applied perpendicular to the plates while the fluid motion is subjected to an exponential decaying pressure gradient. The two plates are kept at different but constant temperatures while the Joule and viscous dissipations are included in the energy equation. The effect of the ion slip and the uniform suction and injection on both the velocity and temperature distributions is examined.

  • A numerical technique for simulating incompressible viscous flow with free surface is presented. The flow field is obtained by penalty finite element formulation. In this work, a modified volume of fluid (VOF) method which is compatible with 4-node element is proposed to track the moving free surface. This scheme can be applied to irregular mesh system, and can be easily extended to three dimensional geometries. Numerical analyses were done for two benchmark examples, namely the broken dam problem and the solitary wave propagation problem. The numerical results were in close agreement with the existing data. Illustrative examples were studied to show the effectiveness of the proposed numerical scheme.

  • In this study, to research characteristics of heat flow of magnetic fluid, it's studied about numerical and experimental method of natural convections change and characteristics of heat transfer in Concentric double pipe annuli as analysis model. In the result, natural convection of magnetic fluid is controlled by direction and strength of the impressed magnetic field. Especially, according to average Nusselt number, heat transfer is the smallest on the balancing point between body force and buoyancy.
