  • This study is to review the problem concerned with aviation safety in Korea and suggest the solution to secure the aviation safety, in respect of regulation. At first, the definition and characteristics of aviation safety are studied, and then the endeavor for the aviation safety of ICAO and FAA are reviewed. All the fields of aviation safety area are included in the scope of this study; airworthiness in aircraft production and maintenance, flight operation, airport operation and air traffic control. The level of safety can be estimated by the frequency of accidents and seriousness. The causes of air accidents can be summarized as five factors; human factor, traffic environment. aircraft, weather, and unexpected incident. The activities to protect accidents are also can be summarized as five areas; man, machine, medium, mission and management. ICAO established the standards and recommends for the aviation safety, and adopted strategic action plan for 21st century. Federal Aviation Administration of USA also contributes for the aviation safety of world wide. Nowadays, ICAO and FAA tries to coordinate each other to set up efficient and effective ways for the aviation safety. ICAO developed safety oversight manual and FAA developed model regulations, individually. However, there has been trials to merge the results of each institute's studies. The direction of this endeavor is to meet the new environment related to globalization of air transport industry. It is necessary for our government to improve the aviation safety regulation system to address the new wave of aviation safety system pursued by international organization. A systematic and comprehensive measure should be devised by cooperation of all the related field and area.

  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been many changes in the aviation industry as a whole. Passenger traffic has decreased, but on the contrary, the international transport demand for cargo planes has never been higher. Due to their geopolitical location when flying to major cities around the world, Korea's international pilots are bound to have relatively more jet lag-causing routes than their American or European-based pilots. Through this study, we tried to analyze the degree of fatigue and fatigue weighting factors according to operating conditions for domestic pilots. As a result of the study, the following conclusions were drawn. Despite the variety of models, routes, and fatigue between individuals, it was found that the 3 Pilot operation route was concentrated as a representative fatigue route. Most of the individual fatigue improvement request sections showed higher fatigue as the night flight section was longer among the 3Pilot routes for more than 12 hours, and 43 out of 90 participants (Korean Air pilots) focused on 3Pilot (two captains and one pilot) as fatigue-intensive operating conditions. Therefore, it proposes an improvement in the system of applying 12-hour unification standards according to Korea's geopolitical international operating conditions and time difference standards.

  • Modern version of supersonic jet fighter aircraft must have guaranteed appropriate controllability and stability in HAoA(high angle of attack). Limit value of aircraft entering into the deep stall in HAoA is related to aircraft configuration design. But, In order to guarantee the aircraft's safety in HAoA, control law for HAoA region implemented in digital Fly-By-Wire flight control system of supersonic jet fighter. The AoA limiter is designed for positive HAoA in longitudinal control law. But, aircraft departure during aggressive negative pitch maneuver such as push over in departure resistance flight test. Therefore negative AoA limiter is needed in longitudinal control law. Result of T-50 flight test show that the AoA is exceed the limit value during aggressive positive pitch maneuver in pull up of power approach mode. In this paper, the AoA limit control law in positive and negative AoA was proposed in order to improve aircraft controllability and stability.

  • The aircraft has to be considered for safety very importantly because of peculiarity of flight in the air, so it should be retained through proper inspection and maintenance not only in production phase but also in operating phase. Recently, it is using the latest technology as engineering approach not depending on human factor to determine on maintenance needs, and domestic production rotary aircraft also has the health & usage monitoring system to measure and to monitor major components. However, continued vibration exceedance phenomenon occurred in production and operation phase because of inappropriate thresholds, and it confirmed as false alarm which is not necessary to repair. In this paper, it is described that operational concept of HUMS, and especially it contains a study result for efficiency of aircraft operation and ultimately the improvement of flight safety by optimizing HUMS thresholds to determine efficiently necessity of maintenance under limited conditions and by establishing inspection/maintenance procedures when the re-designated thresholds exceedance occurred.

  • With the recent development of defense technology, various aircraft armaments/equipments are being developed. Among them, cruise guided weapons(missile) for launching aircraft can be installed on aircraft aftersecuring reliability and safety through varioustests. In order to avoid collision with aircraft, missile separated from aircraft must release restraint of wing at the specified time, control wing in the specified direction. In order to confirm this, a test system that can control MIL-STD-1760 according to safety separation procedure and verify release performance is required. test system needs a function to check circuit for release of restraints and a function to check driving performance by controlling MIL-STD-1760. In addition, test system should be simulate environment separated from aircraft. This paper presented a testsystemthat can verify circuit and driving performance mounted on missile according to the safety separation procedure, and it was confirmed that it was normally separated from aircraft through flight tests.

  • De-icing system is essential for any aircraft to fly in icing conditions. So there are two kinds of aircraft-those that are certificated for flight in icing conditions and those that are not. Icing certification involves a rigorous testing program, and relatively few light aircraft carry this approval. From a legal perspective, aircraft that do not have all required ice protection equipment installed and functional are prohibited from venturing into an area where icing conditions are known. There are a few kinds of de-icing system. It is necessary to review the systems in point of aircraft certification considering the operational and safety issues.

  • This paper presents improvement of the reception noise suppression method during formation flights of aircraft. Since aircraft communication equipment is very important for flight mission and safety to perform the functions of internal/external communications, it is required to implement noise-free, clean communication quality, and transmitting/receiving functions. Therefore, the FTA (Fault Tree Analysis) analysis and failure search were performed on the reception noise, and the internal noise of the intercom that affected the reception noise and the none-transmition phenomenon was identified. We changed the multiple grounds of the intercom to a single ground and applied an improved method of filtering the DC Offset voltage. As a result, the voice quality of the communication system of the aircraft was improved through the reduction of the reception noise during formation flights, and it was verified by ground and flight tests.

  • Currently, in Korea, to obtain a jet type rating, you must receive training on a small business jet model. The reason is because of the law in the Aviation Safety Act Enforcement Rules 『Appendix 4』 that states, "You must receive at least 2 hours of flight training." In the end, it is acquiring type rating as a small business jet aircraft with relatively low operating costs. The qualifications acquired in this way are different from those for aircraft operated by airlines. However, if you have an initial jet type rating, you can acquire an airline aircraft qualification just by training on a simulator, so airlines want you to have at least a small-jet type rating. However, in the United States and Australia, there is a system in place to acquire initial jet type rating through simulator training without actual flight training.

  • The IoT (Internet of Things) technology is rapidly becoming an important consideration in many engineering fields in the current 4th industrial era. In recent years, the concepts of digital shipbuilding and smart factories have been adopted as trends in shipyards. However, there is active interest in research on implementing autonomous driving in autonomous vehicles and airplanes, which is currently available in commercial form in a limited capacity. The present study is regarding the path-tracking performance of a boat to accomplish an autonomous driving mission using a flight controller (FC) and real-time kinematic (RTK) global positioning system (GPS) based on an open-source Ardupilot; an actual sea test is also performed using this system on a calm lake. The boat's mission is to evaluate the maneuverability of the self-driving process to a specific point and returning to the home position. For a given speed, the difference between the preset mission trajectory and actual operational trajectory was analyzed, and a series of studies were conducted on the applicability of the system to ships. In addition, the movements and maneuverability of the OmniX-type hull with four propellers were investigated, and the driving path-tracking performance was observed to increase by a maximum of 48%.
