The Purpose of this study is to find the effects of the portfolio assessment on elementary students' scientific knowledge, inquiry process skill, scientific attitudes in the teaching of science. And finally the parents' response to the portfolio assessment is also investigated. In order to reach the goal of this study, the investigator developed the evaluation instrument such as an experimental report and a cumulative observation sheet for the 4th-grade Unit-1 'Light Propagation' and Unit-3 'Separating Mixtures', and then these were administered to 42 4th-grade elementary students in Inchon. Based upon the findings and within the limitations of this study, several conclusions can be drawn regarding the problems investigated. First, as the portfolio assessment offers enough information about individual student's performance, it has a highly positive effect on evaluating the students' scientific knowledges. It can also make possible to grasp the several aspects of the student's progress. Second, the portfolio assessment can be implemented without giving students any psychological pressure from testing itself. Therefore, the portfolio assessment is an effective means of appraising inquiry process skills. Third, the portfolio assessment is effective to evaluate the students' attitude toward science by means of individual records which include such aspects that is hardly found by the teacher who teaches science in the class. Fourth, as most parents showed a positive response to this portfolio assessment, it is considered to be effective method of appraising the result of teaching science at elementary school. Accordingly, this study demonstrated that the portfolio assessment is an effective method that can assess students' scientific knowledges, inquiry process skills, and scientific attitudes gained from science teaching-learning. Therefore, it is necessary to implement the portfolio assessment to other grade students as well in the following study where teacher may give more encouragements and suggestions to sti dents for the better learning motives. Also teachers should suggest more definite evaluation criteria to students so that they may improve the students' self and peer evaluation skills.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the psychological problems of the children in early stage and provide basic data for develop the children's mental health promotion programs. Methods: There were 270 subjects who were fist and forth grade of elementary school and the data was collected through their parents. This study use Child Problem-Behavior Screening Questionnaire that was divided into five sub-scales, including internal problems, external problems, cognitive problems, abuse problems and psychosomatic problems. Each sub-scales have one cutting points, children whose scores above the cutting points means abnormal in correspond subscale. Results: 1) The most appearing problems was psychosomatic problems with 10.8% of subjects and next internal problems with 8.6% of subjects in elementary school student. 2) For distribution of mental behavior development according to gender, there was significant difference in psychosomatic problems between male and female (p =.009). 3) For distribution of mental behavior development according to grade, the results showed that significant difference in internal problems (p =.000) and total scores of CPSQ (p =.012) between first grade and forth grade. Conclusion: When we develop children's mental health promotion program, it is necessary to considerate the gender and grade characteristics.
This study is to recognize importance of casing anxiety on mathematics for underachievers and to examine a plan to solve a problem with anxiety, by analyzing factors which make underachievers anxious on the mathematics. First, we analyze factors which make mathematical underachievers anxious on the mathematics. Second, we compare and analyze a level of anxiety on the mathematics and factors which cause anxiety on the mathematics according to their grade and gender. This study's participants were 308 mathematical underachievers at 4th, 5th, and 6th grade, studying at six different elementary schools in three different areas. The results of factors which make mathematical underachievers anxious on the mathematics obtained from the survey are as follows. First, in the top-category factor, mathematical underachievers are influenced by following factors in order, which are a mathematic subject, learner's attitude, environment, and a teacher. Second, in the factor of making students anxious on the mathematics according tn their grade, although the mathematic anxiety of students at 6th grade is higher than students at 4th and 5th grade, in the anxiety differences between the different grades. Third, in the factors which make the students anxious on the mathematics according to their gender, female students show more anxiety than male students. In summary, an anxiety of the underachievers at the elementary schools are different in the top and sub-category factor, according to their grades and their gender. It is shown that the underachievers feel more anxiety compared to normal elementary schools, and therefore the anxiety on the mathematics is one of the causes of under-achievement of the mathematics.
The purpose of this study was to compare the written tests of the science lessons at elementary schools with the instructional objectives of the teachers' guide for the first term of the 5th grade by using Klopfer's taxonomic system. In the analysis of the instructional objectives in the teachers' guide, A.0(40.0%) and $B.0{\sim}E.0$(42.4%) showed high level but the proportion of processes of F.0(5.6%), G.0(4.0%), H.0(4.0%), and I.0(4.0%) showed low level, while in the written tests A.0 was 54.8%, $B.0{\sim}E.0$ was 36.1%, F.0 was 7.3%, and G.0 was 1.8% but H.0 and 1.0 was not taken at all. In the comparison with the instructional objectives in the teachers' guide about the domain of the knowledge and the comprehension showed hish and the processes of the scientific inquiry showed relatively low. The results of this study suggested that a desirable written test should be made to consider elementary science curriculum and instructional objectives and hold up rates of each behavior category between the instructional objectives of teachers guide and assessment objectives of written tests.
The purpose of this study was to verify the validity and reliability for the Test of Oral Reading and Comprehension Skill (Gardner, 2000) for Korean lower level elementary school children. Subjects were 122 first to third grade students, tested individually. The vocabulary and comprehension sub-tests of K-WISC III and the reading comprehension test of Basic Academic Skills Assessment (Kim, 2000) were used to verify concurrent validity. Internal reliability was determined by internal consistency coefficients. Results verified concurrent validity. Test scores differed significantly by grade level. Test reliability was also confirmed. In conclusion, the Oral Reading and Comprehension Skill Test (Gardner, 2000) is reliable and valid for examination of reading comprehension skills for Korean lower level elementary school children.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects from social supports and global self-worth on stresses for the children. The subjects were 438 children of the 5th grade in Elementary School and the first grade in Junior High School in Taejeon. The instruments used for this study were Children's Social Support, Global Self-Worth and Stress Scale. The data were analyzed using t-test, Pearson's correlation, multiple regression and path analysis. The main results of the study were as follows; 1. The stresses were different depending on age. When the family and the teacher give higher social supports, the 5th graders have higher global self-worth. When the family gives higher social supports, the stresses were decreased for the 5th graders. When the children have higher global self-worth, the stresses were decreased. 2. When the first graders in Junior High School experienced higher global self-worth and social supports from their friends, family, teacher, the stresses were decreased. 3. The first graders in Junior High School experienced more stresses than the 5th graders in Elementary School in parent-related and academic-related domains. But the first graders in Junior High School experienced less stresses than the 5th graders in Elementary School in friend-related domains. 4. The path analysis showed that social supports from friends and family explained 15% of the stresses for the 5th graders in elementary school. Social support from friends, family, and teacher explained 28% of the stresses for the first graders in Junior High School. 5. For the 5th graders in Elementary School, social supports from friends and family had direct influences on the global self-worth. And the global self-worth had direct influence on children's stresses. But for the first graders in Junior High School, social supports from friends, family, and teacher had direct influences on the global self-worth. And the social supports from friends had direct and indirect effects on children's stresses. 6. For predicting the stresses, the most significant variable was the global self-worth for the 5th graders in Elementary School and the first graders in Junior High School.
Purpose: In an attempt to investigate the differences in the level of stress & mental health between extracurricular learning group and non-extracurricular learning group and level of stress and mental health by the extracurricular learning-related characteristics, this study was carried out in upper grade elementary students.
