  • High strength concrete is not only vulnerable to the occurrence of spalling which generates the loss of cross-section in concrete structures but produces faster degradation in its mechanical properties than normal strength concrete in the event of fire. This study aims to evaluate fire resistance of high strength segment concrete with PET fibers mixed to prevent spalling under ISO834 (2hr) and RABT fire curve. As results, the samples without PET fibers show the concrete loss up to the depth of about 8 cm and 9.5 cm from the surface exposed to fire under ISO834 and RABT fire curve respectively. The samples mixed with PET fiber of 0.1% show no spalling under ISO834 fire curve and the spalled thickness of 6.5 cm under RABT fire curve after the fire tests. Finally, the sample mixed with PET fiber of 0.2% shows no spalling under RABT fire curve. The results indicate that the suitable amounts of PET fiber for securing fire resistance performance of this high strength segment concrete are 0.1% under ISO834 fire curve and 0.2% under RABT fire curve. However, even though spalling does not occur, it is necessary to repair the deterioration of concrete up to 4 cm from the surface exposed to fire after fire.

  • Inorganic chemical treated wood was prepared by impregnation of calcium or magnesium chloride ($CaCl_2$ or $MgCl_2$) solution and immersion in saturated solution of ammonium fluoride ($NH_4F$) as a reactant in order to make an introduction of a refractory fluorides with fungicidal and insecticidal effects in wood. The weight percent gains (WPGs) were increased with increase in concentration of calcium chloride or magnesium chloride solution, and were higher in treatment with calcium chloride than with magnesium chloride. Inorganic substances were produced mainly in the lumina of tracheides. These substances were proved to be the calcium fluoride or magnesium fluoride by the energy dispersive X-ray analyzer in conjunction with a scanning electron microscope (SEM-EDX). The treated wood showed good decay resistance because the weight losses were hardly occurred by the test fungi such as Tyromyces palustris and Trametes versicolor. The fire resistance effect was superior to the treated wood compared with that of the untreated wood.

  • The results of diagnostics and analysis of an industrial hall located on the premises of a thermal power plant severely damaged by fire are presented in the paper. The comprehensive failure-related diagnostics, non-destructive and destructive tests of steel and concrete materials, geodetic surveying of selected structural members, numerical modelling, static analysis and reliability assessment were focused on two basic goals: The determination of the current technical condition of the load bearing structure and the assessment of its post fire resistance as well as assessing the degree of damage and subsequent design of reconstruction measures and arrangements which would enable the safe and reliable use of the building. The current mechanical properties of the steel material obtained from the tests and measured geometric characteristics of the structural members with imperfections were employed in finite element models to study the post-fire behaviour of the structure. In order to compare the behaviour of the numerically modelled steel roof truss, subjected to the effects of fire, with the real post-fire response of the damaged structure theoretically obtained resistance, critical temperature and the time at which the structure no longer meets the required reliability criteria under its given loading are compared with real values. A very good agreement between the simulated results and real characteristics of the structure after the fire was observed.

  • In this study, the fire resistance test was carried out with a parameter such as fiber(PP+NY) mixed ratio on high strength concrete with 80MPa, and the spalling resistance property was evaluated. Concrete material test was carried out with a parameter such as fiber(PP+NY) mixed ratio(0%, 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.2%) of high strength concrete with 80MPa. Although the flowability and the strength capacity were delicately decreased with a increase of fiber mixed ratio, they satisfied the target limits. As the spalling resistance property after the fire resistance test of 3 hours, the spalling was partly shown on the high strength concrete with fiber(PP+NY) mixed ratio of 0% but, wasn't shown on the high strength concrete with fiber(PP+NY) mixed ratio of 0.05% ~ 0.2%.

  • A numerical model considering the internal vaporization and the creep effect, in the form of a analytical program, for tracing the behavior of high strength concrete(HSC) members exposed to fire is presented. The two stages, i.e., spalling procedure and fire resistance time, associated with the thermal, moisture flow, creep and structural analysis, for the prediction of fire resistance behavior are explained. The use of the analytical program for tracing the response of HSC member from the initial pre-loading stage to collapse, due to fire, is demonstrated. Moisture evaporates, when concrete is exposed to fire, not only at concrete surface but also at inside the concrete to adjust the equilibrium and transfer properties of moisture. Finite element method is employed to facilitate the moisture diffusion analysis for any position of member, so that the prediction method of the moisture distribution inside the concrete members at fire is developed. The validity of the numerical model used in this program is established by comparing the predictions from this program with results from others fire resistance tests. The analytical program can be used to predict the fire resistance of HSC members for any value of the significant parameters, such as load, sectional dimensions, member length, and concrete strength.

  • Fire resistance and thermal stability of polypropylene composite systems were investigated by using several halogenated fire-retardants such as decabromodiphenyl oxide (DBDPO) and chlorinated paraffin wax (CPW). The fire resistance of composite systems was thoroughly examined by measuring limited oxygen index (LOI, ASTM D2863, ISO 4589) and characteristic properties of cone calorimetry(ASTM E1354, ISO 5660) heat release rates (HRR), time to ignition (TTI), total heat release (THR), effective heat of combustion (EHC), mass loss rates, etc. Comparing the cone calorimetry experimental results of the halogen flame retardants, DBDPO exhibited twice higher efficiency than CPW in polypropylene systems, and the LOI also showed similar trends to cone calorimetry. The thermo-oxidative stability of the composite systems was increased about 30-5$0^{\circ}C$ in thermogravimetry analysis.Collectively, the combustion, extinction and thermally-stable characteristics of flame retardants were identified in this study.

  • Beams play an important role to transfer an applied load on the floor into columns. However, if the beams affected by a fire the length will be changed longer or shorter and the structural stability decreased gradually and resulted in structural failure. Therefore, the fire regulation requires that structural beam has to satisfied with a constant fire resistance. The fire resistance conducted by a constant size and boundary condition in an horizontal furnace. But this is not enough to adopt a beam made of high structural steels having various lengths. In this study, in order to suggest structural behaviors of beams made of high structural steels at high temperature, mechanical properties at high temperature and heat stress analysis were used and the surface temperature, expansion, displacement and variance of maximum load according to lengths of the beam were compared with those of SM 400.

  • The objective of this study is to determine the effective thermal conductivity and thermal resistance values in test boreholes with three different fill materials. To evaluate these heat transfer properties, in-situ tests on four vertical boreholes were conducted by adding a monitored amount of heat to water over various test lengths. Two parameter estimation models, line-source and numerical one-dimensional models, for evaluation of thermal response test data were compared when applied on the same four data sets. Results show that the average thermal conductivity deviation between measured data and these two models is in the range of $3.03\%$ to $4.45\%$. The effect of increasing grout thermal conductivity from 1.34 to 1.82 $W/m^{\circ}C$ resulted in overall increases in effective formation thermal conductivity by $11.1\%$ to $51.9\%$ and reductions in borehole thermal resistance by $11.6\%$ to $26.1\%$.

  • Generally, the reinforced concrete slab has great fire resistance performance because concrete has excellent thermal material properties under fire. But, in the case of hollow slab, it will be expected that hollow slabs have different temperature distribution and fire endurance performance compare to reinforced concrete slab. Because hollow slab has internal void space that occurs decreasing regenerative effect of concrete and formation of internal air layer. Evaluation method for fire resistance performance of hollow slabs was proposed using $wickstr{\ddot{o}}m^{\prime}s$ method. For the casual use of evaluation, simplified method was proposed which was limited to solid slab and donut type hollow slab which was developed by authors of this research paper. Also, verification on proposed method was performed by comparing results of fire experiment for hollow slab and evaluation results. Proposed method of the results of this study was possible to predict the residual strength and temperature distribution of slabs under fire.
