  • The finite volume time domain(FVTD) method gives accurate results for the calculation of electromagnetic wave propagation but it should be noted that the number of sampling points per wavelength should be increased when more accurate numerical results are required. Moreover it requires large amount of computer memory resources. In this paper we propose a modified FVTD that employs a time subdivision. The local time-subdivided FVTD(FVTD-LTS) method is enough to divide the space domain grid with a large step size. This method can reduce computation time and memory resources. To validate the proposed method, sever numerical examples are presented. We have then shown that the proposed method yields a reasonable solution.

  • The use of the shape memory alloy, Nitinol wire, is investigated as an actuator for enhancing the damping in structural vibration systems. The first-order mathematical model of the Nitinol wire is obtained from the experimental data for an actuator. Finite element method is utilized for the strain gage sensor model, which is installed at the root of cantilever beam. A simple system, cantilever beam, is built as a flexible structural system to implement a control law with the Nitinol wire actuator. The system model including sensor and actuator is derived, which agrees with the experimental results. The actuator dynamics is augmented with the system so as to design PI controller and the one of robust controllers, LQG/LTR controller, and the control laws are implemented experimentally. The experimental study shows the feasibility of utilizing the Nitinol wire as an actuator for the purpose of vibration control.

  • In this paper, we have investigated the phase change memory device with cell structure using three-dimensional finite element analysis tool for reducing reset current. From the simulation, the reset current of PRAM with $SiO_2$ inserting layer is greatly reduced, compared with the conventional device.

  • This work resumes a research that proposes the use of the technique based on the dissipation energy of the shape memory alloy (SMA) ties. It focuses principally on the assessment of the effectiveness of the use of these smart materials on displacements, accelerations and the stresses of the minaret of the great mosque of Ajloun in Jordan. The 3-D finite element model of the minaret is performed by the ANSYS software. First of all, the proposed model is calibrated and validated according to the experimental results gathered from ambient vibration testing results. Then, a nonlinear transient analysis is considered, when the El-Centro earthquake is used as the input signal. Different simulating cases concerning the location, number and type of SMA devices are proposed in order to see their influence on the seismic response of the minaret. Hence, the results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed SMA device.

  • With the accuracy of the nonlinearity guaranteed, plenty of time and large memory space are needed when we solve the finite element numerical solution of nonlinear partial differential equations. In this paper, we use the Group Element Method (GEM) to deal with the non-linearity of the BBM-Burgers Equation with Conservation form and perform a numerical analysis for two particular initial-boundary value (the Dirichlet boundary conditions and Neumann-Dirichlet boundary conditions) problems with the Finite Element Method (FEM). Some numerical experiments are performed to analyze the error between the exact solution and the FEM solution in MATLAB.

  • In general, we have used the finite element method(FEM) to find natural frequencies of plates. In this method, however, it is necessary to use a large amount of computer memory and computation time because the FEM requires many degrees of freedom for finding natural frequencies of plates correctly. Therefore it was very difficult to analyze the free vibration of plates correctly on personal computer. For overcoming this disadvantage of the FEM, the authors have developed the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method(FE-TSCM) which is based on the concept of modeling techniques in the FEM and the transfer of the stiffness coefficient in the transfer stiffness coefficient method. In this paper, we formulate free vibration analysis algorithm of rectangular plates using the FE-TSCM. Some numerical examples of rectangular plates are proposed, and their results and computation times obtained by the FE-TSCM are compared with those by the FEM and the finite element-transfer matrix method in order to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the FE-TSCM.

  • This paper presents an application of an impedance boundary condition to 3D vector finite element analysis of a multi-port cylidrical microwave cavity using Snell's law. Computing memory benefits and computing time reduction are obtained from this method compared with the conventional finite element method(FEM). To verify the method, a high permittivity scatterer in free space is analyzed and compared with the results of conventional (FEM). In addition, this method has been analyzed several types of cavities, including water load, to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the program.

  • Preconditioners for a two-dimensional combined finite element formulation have been devised and tested for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. The FSI code simulating the interaction of a elastic body with an unsteady flow is based on P2P1 finite element combined formulation. It has been shown that two preconditioners among them perform well with respect to computational memory and convergence for a bench-mark problem. Based on the verification of the preconditioners for the two-dimensional combined formulation, four preconditioners are proposed for the problem of an elastic body interacting with a flow.
