  • The high intensity of research and modeling in fields of mathematics, physics, biology and chemistry requires new computing resources. For the big computational complexity of such tasks computing time is large and costly. The most efficient way to increase efficiency is to adopt parallel principles. Purpose of this paper is to present the issue of parallel computing with emphasis on the analysis of parallel systems, the impact of communication delays on their efficiency and on overall execution time. Paper focuses is on finite algorithms for solving systems of linear equations, namely the matrix manipulation (Gauss elimination method, GEM). Algorithms are designed for architectures with shared memory (open multiprocessing, openMP), distributed-memory (message passing interface, MPI) and for their combination (MPI + openMP). The properties of the algorithms were analytically determined and they were experimentally verified. The conclusions are drawn for theory and practice.

  • A simple analytical and finite element(FE) models are used to study the tensile properties of Al matrix composite with continuous TiNi fibers. The effects of residual stresses caused by the shape momory effects have been compared for various mechanical behaviors as a function of fiber volume fraction and degree of pre-strain and fiber configurations. It is found that both the back stress in the Al matrix induced by stiffness of TiNi fibers and the compressive stress in the matrix are caused of the strengthening mechanisms. Both theoretical and analytical results show quite good agreement and are closed to the experimental data except in high volume content.

  • Shape memory alloy (SMA) helical springs have found a large number of different applications in industries including biomedical devices and actuators. According to the application of SMA springs in different actuators, they are usually under tension and torsion loadings. The ability of SMAs in recovering inelastic strains is due to martensitic phase transformation between austenite and martensite phases. Stress or temperature induced martensite transformation induced of SMAs is a remarkable property which makes SMA springs more superior in comparison with traditional springs. The present paper deals with the simulation of SMA helical spring at room temperature. Three-dimensional phenomenological constitutive model is used to describe superelastic behavior of helical spring. This constitutive model is implemented as a user subroutine through ABAQUS STANDARD (UMAT), and the process of the implementation is presented. Numerical results show that the developed constitutive model provides an appropriate approach to captures the general behavior of SMA helical springs.

  • Even though there are many analysis methods of circular tanks on elastic foundation, the finite element method is widely used for that purpose. But the finite element method requires a number of memory spaces, computation time to solve large stiffness equations. In this study many the simplified methods(Analogy of Beam on Elastic Foundation, Foundation Stiffness Matrix, Finite Element Method and Transfer Matrix Method) are applied to analyze a circular tank on elastic foundation. By the given analysis methods, BEF analogy and foundation matrix method, the circular tank was transformed into the skeletonized frame structure. The frame structure was divided into several finite elements. The stiffness matrix of a finite element is related with the transfer matrix of the element. Thus, the transfer matrix of each finite element utilized the transfer matrix method to simplify the analysis of the tank. There were no significant difference in the results of two methods, the finite element method and the transfer matrix method. The transfer method applied to a circular tank on elastic foundation resulted in four simultaneous equations to solve completely.

  • Piping systems are composed of pipes with various thickness, diameter and length. Accurate analysis of a piping system requires a complicated three dimensional finite element model and a computer system with large memory size, while simplified models result in system response prediction with deteriorated accuracy. An efficient analysis model for piping systems is proposed in this study. The proposed model is developed by introducing a joint model which accounts for the behavior of a pipe connection. Pipes are represented by beam elements and the effect of local deformation of pipe connections are replaced by joint element deformations. The proposed model which is as simple and efficient as a beam model can be used to obtain piping system response with accuracy close to that of a finite element model.

  • In the case of performing experimental modal analysis(EMA) and finite- element analysis(EFA) for a whole structure of automotive body that is composed of many complex parts, a trouble may arise from the calculation time, the capacity of memory in computers and the experimental conditions, etc. In this paper, for the vibrational analysis of automotive body model, the efficient modal synthesis method by means of dividing the whole structure into two parts and performing EMA and FEA for each part is studied. In addition, the method based on Lagrange interpolation is proposed for approximating rotational degrees-of-freedom information and linking FEA with EMA. In result, by measuring translational degrees-of-freedom information of only few points and adopting only few modes, the linking method based on Lagrange interpolation turned out to be efficient and accurate in the low frequency range.

  • This paper presents the 2-D analysis of damper transient in superconducting of damper transient in superconducting synchronous generator(SCG) using finite element method. Efficient 2-D analysis model which compensates the leakage flux is proposed for the savign of computation time and memory capacity required in 3-D finite element analysis. The characteristics of damper transient in SCG and the prime role of damper also have been evaluated.

And Jw - method which is used for analyzing liner system with sinusoidal voltage input can be generalized in nonlinear time-periodic magnetio field system. The CHBFEM enables us to calculate the each harmonic magnetic flux ditribution and the distortion of currents resulting from material at an AC voltage source and to save calculating time, the number of calculation and computer memory.

  • A new numerical algorithm using equal order linear finite element and fractional step method has been developed which is capable of analyzing unsteady fluid flow and heat transfer problems. Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) method is used for the weighted residual formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations. It is shown that fractional step method, in which pressure term is splitted from the momentum equation, reduces computer memory and computing time. In addition, since pressure equation is derived without any approximation procedure unlike in the previously developed SIMPLE algorithm based FEM codes, the present numerical algorithm gives more accurate results than them. The present algorithm has been applied preferentially to the well known bench mark problems associated with steady flow and heat transfer, and proves to be more efficient and accurate.

  • We have developed a software package for the analysis of electric field distribution in human body. It includes the graphical finite element mesh generator, linear system of equations solver using sparse matrix and vector technique, and post-processor for the display of the results. This software package can be used in various research areas of biomedical engineering where we inject current or apply voltage to human body. The software package was developed on Macintosh II computer and the size of the model is only limited by the main memory.
