Effect of Nutrient Concentrations and Fertilization Intervals on Growth of Native Pteridophyte on Greenhouse (자생 앙치류의 양액농도와 관주주기가 생육에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was performed to determine the effect of nutritional concentrations and fertilization intervals on growth of native pteridophyte (Pteris multifida, Cyrtomium falcatum, Cheilanthes argentea). Nutrient concentrations were treated with non-treat, 500X, 1,000X and 2,000X solution, and fertilization periods were treated in everyday, 5, 10 and 20day respectively, under the 30% shading net. Pteris multfida appeared to be very good for growth by fertilizing at intervals of 10 day with nutrient concentration of 2,000X drainage solution. The growth of Cyrtomium falcatum was the best in the treatment of $1,000{\sim}2,000X$ concentration for 10 days while that of Cheilanthes argentea was the highest in the treatment of 1,000X concentration for 5days.

  • According to the research of the cultivation result of Gardenia for 5 years to investigate its cultivation conditions and problems, the development of the variety with early mature and high yielding is urgent and that of rooted cutting cultivation method by the experiment of rooted cutting, bed soil, growth regulator and cutting period are pressing. The development of cultivation method with planting year, planting density, supplementary period and amounts of supplementary of Gardenia planted on growing field are required and for the disease and insect pest control, the research of the cultivation method with disease and insect pest resistance is ne­eded by auxotrophic fertilizing and organic agricultural method, not by agriltural chemicals.

Analysis of Ground Water used for Agriculture in Kyonggi Province (경기지방 농업용 지하수 수질 현황)

  • We conducted this survey to find out the quality of ground water used for agriculture. Water samples mainly collected from plastic film houses which were located at Yongin City, Pyungtaek City, Hwasung Kun and Suwon City in Kyonggi Province. We measured EC, COD, ammonium, nitrate, sulfate, chlorite etc., and sampled three times in 1998. According to our survey, the ground water was suitable for irrigation purpose, but nitrate concentrations in ground water used in the intensive plastic film houses were high enough to require a special consideration or. the water and fertilizing management. On occasion of Pyungtaek, these results showed us specific. There are many differences among regions but aren't among periods on the part of nitrate concentrations. We found ground water quaky got worse as EC and nitrate value were going up. And there was high correlation between them.

The applicable evaluation of biodegradable polymer coated-mulching paper for afforestation seedlings (생분해성 고분자 코팅 조림묘목용 mulching mat 원지의 적용성 평가)

  • Recently, as the function of largest supplier of biomass for "low carbon green growth", the necessity for systematic management of afforestation areas is emphasizing. The forestation of seedling, besides the afforestation cost itself, is required some additional follow-up management costs, like mowing and fertilizing of forestation area, and removal of bindweed. The mulching mat for afforestation seedlings is available for rooting of little seedlings as well as initial forestation expenses. Mulching technique is also used to control soil temperature and moisture by covering the surface of ground. In this study, the paper based-mulching film coated with biodegradable polymer and functional additive was specially produced using laboratory bar coater, and analyzed for its degradable behavior. Coating colors were prepared by dissolving PE (polyester) 80 % and PLA(polylactic acid) 20 % in chloroform and finally applied to handsheet prepared by preceding study conditions. Base paper and polymer-coated paper were artificially aged by 2 kinds of degradation methods, which are soil degradation by microorganism and light degradation by 257 nm UV wavelengths. Strength property, oxidation index and morphological property were evaluated by reduction rates of tensile strength, FTIR spectra ratio of carboxyl and carbonyl group and SEM micrograph. As these results, polymer coated-paper was superior to base paper in degradation behaviors, having results with lower reduction rate of strength properties.

Efficacy of Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection for Leukocytospermia

  • White blood cells (WBCs) are present in most human ejaculates, but abnormally high concentration of seminal leukocytes may reflect an underlying pathological condition. The World Health Organization (WHO) has defined leukocytospermia as status of more than $10^6$ WBC/mL of semen. The purpose of this study was firstly, to compare the outcomes between conventional IVF and ICSI in leukocytospermia, and secondly, to investigate whether ICSI may be an alternation treatment for patients with leukocytospermia. Total 346 cycles of conventional IVF and ICSI candidates underwent IVF cycles at Eulji Hospital Infertility Clinic. Semen Parameters including concentration, motility, morphology of spermatozoa and concentration of leukocytes were assessed from the raw ejaculates. There was no difference in sperm concentration, motility and morphology. The rates of fertilization and good embryo development from ICSI were significantly higher than those from conventional IVF in leukocytospermia (60.4% & 32.5%, respectively for ICSI group and 44.4% & 28.5%, respectively for IVF group, P<0.00l). The pregnancy rate after ICSI was also higher than that from conventional IVF (34.0% vs 29.1 %, P<0.05). These results indicate that the presence of seminal leukocyes (> 1$\times10^6$ WBC/mL of semen) is adversely related with fertilization, embryo development and pregnancy rate. Therfore the measurement of seminal leukocytes in routine semen analysis appears to be of prognostic value with regard to male fertilizing potential. In conclusion, it is suggested that ICSI is an alternative choice of treatment for patients with leukocytospermia.

Effect of BTS and Androhep during Storage Times on the Kinematics and Capacitation Status in Liquid Boar Semen (BTS와 Androhep이 보존 기간 동안 액상 정액의 운동역학 및 수정능 획득에 미치는 영향)

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of storage time on fresh boar semen in Androhep and Beltsville Thawing Solution (BTS). Boar semen samples extended in each extender were stored at $17^{\circ}C$ up to 4 days. Sperm motility kinematics was evaluated by computer assisted sperm analyzer (CASA) and capacitation status by chlortetracycline (CTC)/Hoechst 33258 staining. Sperm motility (%) was not decreased during storage in BTS and Androhep. No significant difference between extenders was observed. Only significant differences in kinematic parameters on linearity during storage were found. The percentage of dead sperm significantly decreased during storage (p<0.05). Also the percentage of noncapacitated, capacitated, and acrosome-reacted sperm significantly modified during storage (p<0.05). However, there was no significant difference between extenders except proportion of capacitated sperm. This finding supported that modification in these parameters was not significantly different between extenders during this short-term storage. Our finding strongly indicated that both Androhep and BIS maintained favorable conditions for motility, motility kinematics, and capacitation status during short-term storage. Despite modifications in some parameters were apparent during sperm storage in extenders, these may not affect the fertilizing capacity of boar semen.

  • To monitor the reproductive patterns of endangered common chimpanzee including annual reproductive cycle, amenorrhea, breeding season, and pregnancy diagnosis, Time-Resolved Fluorescence Immuno Assay (TR-FIA) was used to trace MRH (estradiol, progesterone, testosterone) and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). In result of this research, age was not the important factor in determining the reproduction capability in common chimpanzee; it was rather greatly influenced by the combination of various factors such as individual's fertilizing ability, presence of obstetrical diseases, the pattern of mating behavior, and the mental communication under the introduction of a mating partner. This research will play an important role in operating conservation project for common chimpanzees and can be extended also for shedding new light on understanding human menopause and obstetrical diseases.

Analysis of Sperm Ability in Specific Pathogen Free Miniature pig for Production of Bio-Organ

  • The purpose of this study was the analysis of sperm ability in Specific Pathogen Free (SPE) miniature pig for production of bio-organ. The collected semen was diluted with extender and stored at $17^{\circ}C$t for up to 7 days. The semen samples were evaluated at 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 days of storage for analysis of sperm ability. Sperm ability was evaluated by examining viability, progressive motility, sperm abnormality and intensity of the sperm membrane. Also, the semen was processed according to the convenient freezing method, and frozen-thawed sperm was evaluated by examining viability, capacitation and acrosome reaction using chlortetracycline (CTC) staining. Motility of spermatozoa of SPF miniature pig was significantly (P<0.05) lower on 3 days or later compared to the Duroc, Yorkshire and Landrace in domestic boar. The percentage of abnormal spermatozoa of Landrace were significantly (P<0.05) higher than in SPF miniature pig, Duroc and Yorkshire that had a similar percentage on 5 or 7 days of sperm storage. The percentage of spermatozoa with coiled tail decreased during the storage period but there were no significant difference. On the other hand, viability of frozen-thawed spermatozoa had a significantly (P<0.05) lower in SPF miniature pig than in other domestic boars. CTC patterns had no significant difference, but SPF miniature pig had higher percentage of capacitated spermatozoa and lower percentage of acrosome-reacted it than domestic boars. Therefore, this study suggest that it is necessary to develop the suitable extender and freezing methods methods for the high viable rate and fertilizing ability in vitro.

The Usage Status of Environment-friendly Materials for Vegetable Cultivated under Protected Houses in the Southern Part of Korea (남부지역 시설채소 재배 농가의 친환경농자재 사용실태)

  • This study was undertaken to survey the usage of environment-friendly materials for 8 vegetable crops including cucumber, tomato, strawberry, eggplant hot pepper, lettuce, perilla leaves, and Welsh onion, cultivated under protected houses. Total of 78 environment-friendly growers in the Southern part of Korea were surveyed from 2003 to 2004. The number of materials used for a crop based on the effectiveness claimed by farmers was $21{\sim}87$ for pest control, $0{\sim}9$ for fertilizing, $2{\sim}41$ for growth promotion and $10{\sim}37$ for soil improvement. It is needed to clarify the ingredients and effectiveness of those environment-friendly materials reaching 323 items, on a science-basis in the future.

Efficiency of Mineral Nitrogen Fertilization on Yield and Botanical Composition of Grassland VII. Estimation of economical way of mineral nitrogen application depending on difference of annual precipitations in permanent grassland.   • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of pure mineral nitrogen fertilization on dry matter yield and to determine the amounts of advisable mineral nitrogen according to difference of annual precipitations in permanent grassland. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Only PK-fertilizing without additional mineral nitrogen application produced 6. 9 tonlha of annual dry matter yields on average in relatively wet years that was higher than in rel. dry and normal years under 3-cut system by 0. 7 and 0.6 ton DMIha, respectively. 2. Due to the lesser rainfall the nitrogen-efficiency was substantially higher with heavy dressing of nitrogen fertilizer. The absolute differences in yield between rel. dry and wet years were 0.4 and 0.7 ton DMIhalyear respectively when dressed with 90 and 120 kgN/ha/cut at 4-, 5- and 6-cut systems, whereas at 3-cut system differences around 1.3 and 1.1 ton Dhllhalyear respectively were recorded. 3. In rel. dry years the most efficient N-dressing rates per ha and year tended to be slightly higher than in rel. wet and normal years. Particularly at 5-cut system 4-7 kg/ha/cut of more nitrogen fertilization was required in order to obtain the highest overyields. 4. The N-dressing rates needed to maintain a nitrogen-efficiency of 8 to 16 kg DM/kg N tended to be stronger particularly at high cut system, and also in rel. dry years higher dressing rates were required that in rel. wet and normal years.
