In this study, an exclusive CAD/CAM system is developed for enhancing the effectiveness and productivity of CNC universal cylindrical grinding machines on which the external/facing/internal grinding cycles and the wheel dressing cycles are integratively carried out. The CAD/CAM system can manage the various processes such as geometry design, NC code generation, NC code verification, DNC operation, and so on. Especially, the feature-based modeling concept is introduced to improve the geometry design efficiency. And the NC code verification is realized by virtual manufacturing technique based on the real-time analysis of NC codes and the boolean operation between workpiece and wheel.
Developed in this paper is a feature based modeling of welded plate construction(WPC) which is composed of flat or bended plates represented as reference plane with a constant thickness. First, the necessity and the characteristics of the feature based modeling of WPC as compared with the assemblies of mechanical parts are investigated. Second, feature library for the assemblied of WPC is shown which contains several types of features like joint feature, groove feature, materialfeature and precision feature. Third, the assembly procedures are presented whichmainly consist of both the assembly transformation and the correct assembly checking. Fourth, weld lines generated in the assembled WPC are defined so that those can be used in the process planning or the manufacturing stage. Finally, A prototype system isdeveloped by using a geometric modeling software Pro/Engineer, a graphic software GL(Graphic Library), and C language on a CAD workstation IRIS.
This research proposed feature extraction algorithms as an input of STEP Ap214 data, and feature parameterization process to simplify further design change and maintenance. The procedure starts with suppression of blend faces of an input solid model to generate its simplified model, where both constant and variable-radius blends are considered. Most existing cell decomposition algorithms utilize concave edges, and they usually require complex procedures and computing time in recomposing the cells. The proposed algorithm using reference features, however, was found to be more efficient through testing with a few sample cases. In addition, the algorithm is able to recognize depression features, which is another strong point compared to the existing cell decomposition approaches. The proposed algorithm was implemented on a commercial CAD system and tested with selected industrial product models, along with parameterization of recognized features for further design change.
In history based parametric CAD modeling systems, persistent identification of the topological entities after design modification is mandatory to keep the design intent by recording model creation history and modification history. Persistent identification of geometric and topological entities is necessary in the product design phase as well as in the re-evaluation stage. For the identification, entities should be named first according to the methodology which will be applicable for all the entities unconditionally. After successive feature operations on a part body, topology based persistent identification mechanism generates ambiguity problem that usually stems from topology splitting and topology merging. Solving the ambiguity problem needs a complex method which is a combination of topology and geometry. Topology is used to assign the basic name to the entities. And geometry is used for the ambiguity solving between the entities. In the macro parametrics approach of iCAD lab of KAIST a topology based persistent identification mechanism is applied which will solve the ambiguity problem arising from topology splitting and also in case of topology merging. Here, a method is proposed where no geometry comparison is necessary for topology merging. The present research is focused on the enhancement of the persistent identification schema for the support of ambiguity problem especially of topology splitting problem and topology merging problem. It also focused on basic naming of pattern features.

Lung cancer is considered to be the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. A technique commonly used consists of analyzing sputum images for detecting lung cancer cells. However, the analysis of sputum is time consuming and requires highly trained personnel to avoid errors. The manual screening of sputum samples has to be improved by using image processing techniques. In this paper we present a Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) system for early detection and diagnosis of lung cancer based on the analysis of the sputum color image with the aim to attain a high accuracy rate and to reduce the time consumed to analyze such sputum samples. In order to form general diagnostic rules, we present a framework for segmentation and extraction of sputum cells in sputum images using respectively, a Bayesian classification method followed by region detection and feature extraction techniques to determine the shape of the nuclei inside the sputum cells. The final results will be used for a (CAD) system for early detection of lung cancer. We analyzed the performance of a Bayesian classification with respect to the color space representation and quantification. Our methods were validated via a series of experimentation conducted with a data set of 100 images. Our evaluation criteria were based on sensitivity, specificity and accuracy.
Most of previous research on machining process planning has not fully included consideration on fixturing. With fixture components properly assembled with the part workpiece in a CAD modeling environment, necessary geometric information of fixture elements and their interrelations with the part model can be obtained so that machining process plans could incorporate fixturing considerations. This paper introduces an interactive fixturing system called I-Fix. I-Fix is a dowel-pin based modular fixture system, and it has been developed using Solid Edge CAD system and Visual Basic. Through customized operations of the assembly commands of the CAD system, I-Fix significantly simplifies user operations and thus reduces fixturing time. Furthermore, I-Fix enhances user convenience by providing general guidance about the fixture components and fixturing methods.
In this paper, a precision inspection technique using CAD/CAI integration is proposed for the parts having very thin and sharp 3 dimensional curve features. The technique begings with feature reconstruction of turbine blades which have 3 dimensional combined feometry, such as splines, and thin circles. The alifnment procedures consistsb of two phases-rough and fine phases : rough phase alignment is based on the conventional 6 point5s probing on the clear cut surfacef, and fine phase alignment is based on the intial measurement on the 3 dimensional curved parts using an lterative measurement feed-back least sequares technique for alignment. Forf the analysis of profile tolerance of parts, the actual measured points are obtained by finding the closet points on the CAD geometry by the developed subdivision technique and the Tschebycheff norm is applied based on iterative fashion, giving accurate profile tolerance value. The developed inspection technique is applied to practical procedures of blade manufacturing and demonstrated high performance.
In the process of mechanical assembly design, assembly modeling systems have been used mainly for the design verification before manufacturing by enabling to check the interference and/ or the dynamic and kinematic performance. However, the conventional assembly modeling systems have a shortcoming that they can not be used in the initial design stage but can be used only after the design is fully completed. In other words conventional assembly modeling systems provide bottom-up modeling which means that the detailed modeling of components must precede the definition of relationships between them. To resolve this problem, an assembly modeling system is proposed to provide a top-down modeling environment in which components and assembly can be modeled simultaneously. To this end, an assembly data structure suitable for top-down assembly modeling has been established. Feature positioning Module(FPM) using geometric constraints has been also developed. The Sekective Solving Method proposed for FPM is based on the priority between the constraint equations and enables the designer's intent expressed by geometric constraints to be maintained throughout the whole modeling process. Finally, the feature based modeling technique using two-level features has been developed. Two-level features include an abstract model and a detailed model in a merged form in non-manifold data frame.
This paper describes a new practical simplification method for feature-based solid models. In this approach, a solid model created using feature modeling operations is first simplified by the suppression of detailed features, and then, if necessary, the model is converted to a surface model to facilitate its modification. Finally, the simplified surface model is delivered to analysis packages. The algorithm was implemented based on CATIA V.5 and applied to mid-surface generation of plastic parts for structural analysis to prove the validity and usefulness.
In feature-based multi-resolution modeling, the features are rearranged according to a criterion for the levels of detail (LOD) of multi-resolution models. In this paper, two different LOD criteria are investigated and discussed. The one is the volumes of subtractive features, together with the precedence of additive features over subtractive features. The other is the volumes of features, regardless of whether the feature types are subtractive or additive. In addition, the algorithms to define and extract the LOD models based on the criteria are also described. The criterion of the volumes of features can be used for a wide range of applications in CAD and CAE in virtue of its generality.
