  • The ore deposit of the Ohtani mine is one of representatives of plutonic tungsten-tin veins related genetically to acidic magmatism of Late Cretaceous in the Inner zone of Southwest Japan. Based on macrostructures of vein filling, three major mineralization stages are distinguished by major tectonic breaks. The constituents of ore minerals are scheelite, cassiterite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, with small amounts of cubanite, stannite, galena, native bismuth, bismuthinite, arsenopyrite and pyrite. The relationship between the polymorphic variations of pyrrhotite and the kinds of the associated characteristic of ore mineral, in relation with hypogene mineralization, has been demonstrated. Pyrrhotite of stage I is predominantly of the hexagonal phase (Hpo>Mpo). Pyrrhotite of stage II is mainly of the monoclinic phase ($Hpo{\ll}Mpo$). Pyrrhotite of stage III is a single monoclinic phase ($Hpo{\ll}Mpo$). The compositions of the hexagonal pyrrhotite decrease in Fe content ranging from 47.44 atom % Fe in stage I to 46.88 atom % Fe in stage III.

  • Mackinawite (FeS), as a ubiquitous reduced iron mineral, is known as a key controller of redox reactions in anaerobic subsurface environment. The reaction of FeS with redox-sensitive toxic element such as arsenic is substantially affected by pH conditions of the given environments. In this study, the interaction of As(V) with FeS was studied under strict anaerobic conditions with various pH conditions. The pH-dependent arsenic removal tests were conducted under wide ranges of pH conditions and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was applied to investigate the reaction mechanisms under pH 5, 7, and 9. The removal efficiency of FeS for As(V) showed the higher removal of As(V) under low pH conditions and its removal efficiency decreased with increasing pH, and no As(V) reduction was observed in 1 g/L FeS solution. However, XAS analysis indicated the reduction of As(V) to As(III) occurred during reaction between FeS and As(V). The reduced form of As(III) was particularly identified as an arsenic sulfide mineral (As2S3) in all pH conditions (pH 5, 7, and 9). As2S3 precipitation was more pronounced in pH 5 where the solubility of FeS is higher than in other pH conditions. The linear combination fitting results of XAS demonstrated that As(V) removal mechanism is concerted processes of As2S3 precipitation and surface complexation of both arsenic species.

  • The $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ gas sensor, prepared by the precipitation of Fe(OH)$_3$ from a solution of iron(III) sulfate and tin (IV) chloride, was composed of fine particles and was superior in sensitivity to other $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$. The gas sensitivity was found to depend on the amounts of remaining sulfate ion the microstructure and a small amount of iron(II) species generated through the reduction of $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$. The sensing mechanism of $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$gas sensor was confirmed to be due to the reduction of $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ to the low resistive Fe$_3$-xO$_4$ by combustible gas and to depend on the crystral structure.

  • Electronic and magnetic properties of the novel rare-earth permanent magnet, $Sm_{2}Fe_{17}N_{3}$, are investigated by performing self-consistent local density functional electronic structure calculations. Employing the LMTO(Linearized Muffin-Tin Orbital) band method, we have obtained the electronic band structures for both paramag-netic and ferromagnetic phases of $Sm_{2}Fe_{17}N_{3}$. Based on the energy band structures, we have studied bonding ef-fects among Sm, Fe, and N atom as well as electronic and magnetic structures. It is found that the N atom sub-stantially reduces the magnetic moment of neighboring Fe atoms through the hybridization interaction and also plays a role in stabilizing the structure. the average magnetic moment of Fe atoms in the ferromagnetic phase of $Sm_{2}Fe_{17}N_{3}$ is estimated to be $2.33{\mu}_B$, which is ~8% larger than the magnetic moment of $Sm_{2}Fe_{17}$, $2.16{\mu}_B$. The Fe I (c) atom, which is located farthest from the N atom and surrounded by 12 Fe nearest neighbors, has the largest magnetic moment ($2.65{\mu}_B$), while the Fe III (f), whose hybridization interaction with N atom is very strong, has the smallest magnetic moment($1.96{\mu}_B$).

  • It is well known that iron is critical for bacterial growth and pathogenic virulence. Due to chemical similarity, $Ga^{3+}$ competes with $Fe^{3+}$ for binding to compounds that usually bind $Fe^{3+}$, thereby interfering with various essential biological reactions. In our present study, gallium(III) nitrate [$Ga(NO_3)_3$] could repress the growth of V. splendidus Vs without complete inhibition. In the presence of $Ga(NO_3)_3$, the secretion of homogentisic acid-melanin (HGA-melanin) in V. splendidus Vs cells could be increased by 4.8-fold, compared to that in the absence of $Ga(NO_3)_3$. HGA-melanin possessed the ability to reduce $Fe^{3+}$ to $Fe^{2+}$. In addition, HGA-melanin increased the mRNA levels of feoA and feoB, genes coding Fe2+ transport system proteins to 1.86- and 6.1-fold, respectively, and promoted bacterial growth to 139.2%. Similarly, the mRNA expression of feoA and feoB was upregulated 4.11-fold and 2.71-fold in the presence of $640{\mu}M$ $Ga(NO_3)_3$, respectively. In conclusion, our study suggested that although $Ga(NO_3)_3$ could interfere with the growth of V. splendidus Vs, it could also stimulate both the production of $Fe^{3+}$-reducing HGA-melanin and the expression of feoA and feoB, which facilitate $Fe^{2+}$ transport in V. splendidus Vs.

  • It is shown that the impurities of Cu(II), Pb(II), Zn(II) and Ag(I) in Bismuth metal and the components of Pb(II), Zn(II) and Sn(IV) in Bismuth alloy are separated into their components from each other by elutions through $3.14cm^2{\times}10cm$ cation exchange resin, $Dowex\;50w\;{\times}\;8$ (100~200 mesh), column with the mixed solutions of HAc and NaAc as the eluents. The elution curve of Fe(III) has a long tailing and is not separated quantitatively from Bi(III). The eluents used for this separation are as follows; 1M HAc + 0.1M NaAc (pH 3.36) for Fe(III) and Bi (III). 0.3M HAc + 0.3M NaAc (pH 4.70) for Cu(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II). 0.5M HAc + 0.5M NaAc (pH4.70) for Ag(I) and Sn(IV). The analysis of cations eluted are carried out by spectrophotometry and EDTA titrimetry. Their recoveries are more than 99%.

  • The Black Eye Galaxy M64 is an intriguing spiral galaxy with a Type III disk break. To trace the origin of its Type III component, we present HST/ACS F606W/F814W photometry of resolved stars in the outer disk of M64 (2.5' < R < 6.5'). First, we discover a bright extended globular cluster (GC) M64-GC1 at R ~ 5.5', and find that it is an old metal-poor halo GC ([Fe/H] = -1.5 +/- 0.2). Second, we find that there are two distinct subpopulations of red giant branch stars (RGBs). One is an old metal-rich ([Fe/H] ~ -0.4) disk population, and the other is an old metal-poor halo population similar to the resolved stars in M64-GC1. The radial number density profile of the metal-rich RGB follows an exponential disk law, while that of the metal-poor RGB follows a de Vaucouleurs's low. From these results, we conclude that the origin of the Type III component in M64 is a halo, not a disk or a bulge. We will further discuss the results in regards to the formation and evolution of M64.

  • This study was performed to solve the problem of the 2nd contamination and excessive treatment cost by determining proper quantity of hydrogen peroxide, iron catalyst, mixing method, and input mode that should be provided when Fenton oxidation (this is mostly applied to small contaminated areas such as service station sites) is applied to the excavated and diesel-contaminated soil. Soil artificially contaminated with 10000mg/kg of diesel was used for the experiment. In the batch test, diesel removal seemed to increase as the concentration of hydrogen peroxide increases. When iron catalyst was added, removal efficiency of diesel was much higher than the time when hydrogen peroxide was added solely. The removal efficiency showed greater when Fe(III) was added compared to Fe(II). Column experiment was executed on the basis of results of the batch test to investigate adequate reagent mixing and input methods. The highest efficiency was acquired in the case of separate input mode. Also, it was found that when inputting Fe(III) iron catalyst and separately inputting hydrogen peroxide after dividing the bundle in the column, removal efficiency was 92.8%, which was 9 times greater than that of the first method, 10.5%, when only hydrogen peroxide was added. Thus, it is expected that if the result of this research is applied to Fenton oxidation for the remediation of soil contaminated by diesel, the problem of the 2nd contamination and excessive treatment charge caused by excessive addition of hydrogen peroxide and iron catalyst could be solved.

  • Magnetic nano-based sorbents have been synthesized for the recovery of two rare earth elements (REE: Nd(III) and Yb(III)). The magnetic nano-based particles are synthesized by a one-pot hydrothermal procedure involving co-precipitation under thermal conditions of Fe(III) and Fe(II) salts in the presence of chitosan. The composite magnetic/chitosan material is crosslinked with epichlorohydrin and modified by grafting alanine and serine amine-acids. These materials are tested for the binding of Nd(III) (light REE) and Yb(III) (heavy REE) through the study of pH effect, sorption isotherms, uptake kinetics, metal desorption and sorbent recycling. Sorption isotherms are well fitted by the Langmuir equation: the maximum sorption capacities range between 9 and 18 mg REE $g^{-1}$ (at pH 5). The sorption mechanism is endothermic (positive value of ${\Delta}H^{\circ}$) and contributes to increase the randomness of the system (positive value of ${\Delta}S^{\circ}$). The fast uptake kinetics can be described by the pseudo-second order rate equation: the equilibrium is reached within 4 hours of contact. The sub-micron size of sorbent particles strongly reduces the contribution of resistance to intraparticle diffusion in the control of uptake kinetics. Metal desorption using acidified thiourea solutions allows maintaining sorption efficiency for at least four successive cycles with limited loss in sorption capacity.
