Reference Electrode for Monitoring Cathodic Protection Potential

  • Reference electrodes are generally implemented for the purpose of monitoring the cathodic protection potentials of buried or immersed metallic structures. In the market, many types of reference electrodes are available for this purpose, such as saturated calomel, silver/silver chloride and copper/copper sulfate. These electrodes contain a porous ceramic junction plate situated in the cylindrical body bottom to permit ionic flux between the internal electrolyte (of the reference electrode) and the external electrolyte. In this work, the copper/copper sulfate reference electrode was modified by replacing the porous ceramic junction plate for a metallic platinum wire. The main purpose of this modification was to avoid the ion copper transport from coming from the inner reference electrode solution into the surrounding electrolyte, and to mitigate the copper plating on the coupon surfaces. Lab tests were performed in order to compare the performance of the two mentioned reference electrodes. We verified that the experimental errors associated with the measurements conducted with developed reference electrode would be negligible, as the platinum surface area exposed to the surrounding electrolyte and/or to the reference electrolyte are maintained as small as possible.

  • In order to predict the onset of the corrosion of steel bars in concrete, a mathematical model was presented to observe the diffusion of chloride ion in aqueous phase, the adsorption and desorption of chloride ions to and from the surface of solid phase of concrete, and the chemical reaction or chloride ions with solid phase. The finite element method was employed to carry out the numerical analysis. The chlorides enetrating through the wall of the concrete structure from the external environment and the chlorides contained in the concrete admixture were confirmed to be two important factors to determine the onset of the corrosion of steel bars.

자기치유 부식방지 코팅의 최근 동향 (Self-healing Coatings for Corrosion Protection: A Review of Recent Advances)

  • In recent years, self-healing coatings have been the subject of increasing interest. The ability of such coatings to self-repair local damage caused by external factors is a major factor contributing to their attractiveness. Metals are extensively used in modern society in a range of applications from infrastructure to aircraft to consumer products. The protection of metals, primarily from corrosion has been an active area of materials science for many years. The aim of this review is the demonstration for recent progress achieved in the development of carrier-based self-healing coatings for the protection of metals. This review mainly covers the reports published after 2010. Two main types of carriers for corrosion inhibitors or healing agents-polymer capsules and porous composite inorganic nanoparticles-are described.

  • 원자력 발전소 내 외부 계통의 표면에 침적된 방사성핵종은 원자로 구조재 및 핵분열생성물의 부식생성물 활성화에 의해 생성된다. 특히, 1차계통 내부에서 물과 부식된 표면 사이의 지속적인 마찰은 냉각재와 부식생성물을 혼합하게 만든다. 그리고 이것들은 계통을 따라 순환한다. 본 논문에서는 설계단계에서 사용되는 1차 계통의 부식생성물과 방사성 핵종의 양을 예측하는 CRUDTRAN, DISER, MIGA-RT 및 CPAIR 코드를 분석하였다. 또한, CRUDTRAN을 이용하여 국내 경수로 1차계통내 부식생성물 거동을 예측하였다. 본 연구목적은 웨스팅하우스형 원전의 실제 데이터로 계산된 값을 측정값과 비교하여 부식생성물 평가 모델의 신뢰도를 향상시키는데 있다.

  • This paper presents a numerical simulation of the failure behaviour for the pipeline which has external corroded parts along the axis. The numerical study for the pipeline failure analysis is based on an FEM with an elastic-plastic and large-deformation. The predicted failure assessments for the simulated corrosion defects are compared with ANSI/ASME B31G code and a modified B31G method.

A Study on the Crevice Corrosion for Ferritic Stainless Steel by Micro Capillary Tube Method

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the initiation and propagation of crevice corrosion for ferritic stainless steel in artificial crevice based on micro capillary tube method. The 430 stainless steel in artificial crevice is potentiostatically polarized in different sodium chloride solutions. Potentiodynamic and potentiostatic polarization data were measured in situ. The potentials in the crevice were measured by depth profile using the 0.04 mm diameter micro capillary tube inserted in the crevice. The potentials in the crevice ranged from -220 mV to -360 mV vs SCE from opening to bottom of crevice, which are lower than the external surface potential, -200 mV vs SCE. Such a potential drop induced the change of the metal surface state from passive to active. The surface of metal is located in passive state in -200 mV but the inner surface keeps active state below -220 mV, Thus these results show that the It drop mechanism in the crevice was more objective for evaluation and the method was easier to reproduce. Therefore the potential drop is one of the reasons for crevice corrosion by measuring the potentials in narrow crevice with a new micro measuring system.

  • 본 연구는 전기화학적 실험측정으로 페라이트계 430스테인레스강 시험편에 인위적으로 틈을 형성시켰다. 부식용액은 IN $H_2SO_4+0.1N\;NaCl$ 전해액을 사용하였고, 각 시험편의 틈의 크기를 달리하였다. 전기화학적 평가방법은 -600mV/5CE에서 정방향으로 +1,200mV/SCE까지 주사속도 600mV/hr로 동전위 분극시험을 실시하여 부식전위, 부동태 전류밀도 등의 부식거동을 분석하였다. 그리고 정전위 분극시험을 실시하여 부동태 구간 전위 -200mV/SCE를 일정하게 인가 한 후, 틈내에 부동태 전류밀도와 틈부식 발생시간을 계측하였다 실험방법에 있어 Microcapillary tube(MCT)를 이용한 방법으로 틈내 각 지점의 전위를 틈 깊이에 따른 틈내부의 전위강하(IR Drop)에 주목하고, 575 430 스테인레스강 금속에 대한 분극특성과 연계하므로써 틈부식의 발생 원인을 '전위의 이동'의 관점에서 규명 하였다.

Determination of the repair grout volume to fill voids in external post-tensioned tendons

  • Recently, investigated failures of external post-tensioned (PT) tendons have called attention to the corrosion of strands in PT bridges, and the prevention of ongoing corrosion is required to secure their structural integrity. Since voids inside ducts can be a source for the ingress of water or deleterious chemicals, the vacuum grouting (VG) method and a volumeter for estimating amount of repair grouts were employed to fill voided ducts. However, the VG method is expensive and time-consuming for infield application because it requires an air-tight condition of entire ducts. Thus, latest research assessed three different repair grouting methods, and the pressure vacuum grouting (PVG) method was recommended in the field because it showed good filling capability in voided ducts and did not require an air-tight condition. Thus, a new method is required to estimate the volume of repair grouts because the PVG method is not applied in air-tight ducts. This research assesses the relationship between voided areas on ducts identified with soundings and required grout volume for repair using experimental results. The results show that the proposed equations and assumptions for estimating repair grout volume provide a sufficient amount of repair grouts for filling voided ducts.

온도조건에 따른 아연-공기 전지의 전기화학적 특성 (Effect of Temperature Conditions on Electrochemical Properties for Zinc-Air Batteries)

  • A zinc-air battery consists of a zinc anode, an air cathode, an electrolyte, and a separator. The active material of the positive electrode is oxygen contained in the ambient air. Therefore, zinc-air batteries have an open cell configuration. The external condition is one of the main factors for zinc-air batteries. One of the most important external conditions is temperature. To confirm the effect of temperature on the electrochemical properties of zinc-air batteries, we perform various analyses under different temperatures. Under 60 ℃ condition, the zinc-air cell shows an 84.98 % self-discharge rate. In addition, high corrosion rate and electrolyte evaporation rate are achieved at 60 ℃. Among the cells stored at various temperature conditions, the cell stored at 50 ℃ delivers the highest discharge capacity; it also shows the highest self-discharge rate (65.33 %). On the other hand, the cell stored at 30 ℃ shows only 2.28 % self-discharge rate.

The Inhibition of C-steel Corrosion in H3PO4 Solution by Some Furfural Hydrazone Derivatives

  • H3SO4(M: 몰농도) 용액에서 탄소강의 부식방지제로 Furfural hydrazone 유도체의 효과를 질량손실법 및 정전류극성법을 사용해 연구하였다. 이들 유도체 존재하에서 탄소강의 부식속도가 급격히 감소함을 관찰하였다. 이 연구로부터 부식방지효율은 부식방지제 농도가 증가함에 따라 증가하였고 I와 SCN을 첨가하면 부식방지효율은 더욱 증가되었다. 질량손실법을 사용해 5×10-6 M의 유도체가 있을 때와 없을 때 30-60oC 사이에서 탄소강 부식에 미치는 온도 효과를 보았다. 부식과정에 대한 활성화에너지(Ea*)와 다른 열역학적 변수들을 계산하였고 이들에 대해 논의하였다. 정전류극성법을 통해 유도체들이 혼합형 방지제로 작용함을 알았고 외부전류를 흘려주었을 때 음극은 더욱 분극되었다. 3M H3SO4 용액에서 탄소강 표면에 이들 유도체들의 흡착은 Frumkin의 흡착등온을 따랐다. 이들 유도체들의 화학구조를 통해 부식방지 메커니즘을 설명하였다.
