  • In this paper, the 1/5 scale models of the reinforced concrete colunms were designed and fabricated. The influence of the number of blasting holes on the exposed length of steel bars and vertical load was investigated. The relation between the length of steel bar and the number of blasting holes was examined by performing the blast tests considering the vertical load on the scaled reinforced concrete columns. Weight of scaled column models by blasting and that of exposed was compared with the number of blasting holes. Finally, based on the exposed length of steel bars and vertical load, the number of blasting holes were calculated. Results shows that the number of blasting holes calculated in this study are suitable for scaled structure models test by blasting demolition.

  • Locally damaged structures caused by earthquake or extraordinary external forces have been required to rapidly be dismantled because of its possibility of additional collapses. Particularly, steel frame structures were demolished by the shaped charge blasting method. Recently a research suggested a shape charge blasting technique which uses bent-shaped charge holder of copper plate and emulsion explosive charge to cut thick steel plates. This study simulated the cutting performance of the bent-shaped charge holder with considering types of explosives, thickness of copper liner and stand-off distances using LS-DYNA software. The shape charge blasting test of a 25mm thickness steel plate were used to calibrate the input parameters of the numerical models. The penetration depth and penetration width were analysed with different types of explosives, thickness of copper liner and stand-off distances.

  • Building demolition and blasting work in urban areas has a possibility which has an effect on the structural stability of nearby structures. In this study, the compressive strength and chemical composition of decrepit concrete materials were estimated by Schmidt rebound test and XRD phase analysis. The damage index of the concrete materials was calculated by measured P-wave velocities. It was revealed that the constituents of the concrete materials affect on the compressive strength. The damage index decreases with increasing compressive strength and decreasing impact energy.

  • This study simulated the shock wave propagation through the tamping material between explosives and hole wall at blasting works and verified the effect of tamping materials. The Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian(ALE) method was selected to model the mixture of solid (Lagrangian) and fluid (Eulerian). The time series analysis was carried out during blasting process time. Explosives and tamping materials (air or water) were modeled with finite element mesh and the hole wall was assumed as a rigid body that can determine the propagation velocity and shock force hitting the hole wall from starting point (explosives). The numerical simulation results show that the propagation velocity and shock force in case of water were larger than those in case of air. In addition, the real site at blasting work was modeled and simulated. The rock was treated as elasto-plastic material. The results demonstrate that the instantaneous shock force was larger and the demolished block size was smaller in water than in air. On the contrary, the impact in the back side of explosives hole was smaller in water, because considerable amount of shock energy was used to demolish the rock, but the propagation of compression through solid becomes smaller due to the damping effect by rock demolition. Therefore, It can be proven that the water as the tamping media was more profitable than air.

  • Risk assessment was carried out in order to improve the remediation and management strategy on a contaminated gunnery site, where a flood control reservoir is under construction nearby. Six chemicals, including explosive chemicals and heavy metals, which were suspected to possess risk to humans by leaching events from the site were the target pollutants for the assessment. A site-specific conceptual site model was constructed based on effective, reasonable exposure pathways to avoid any overestimation of the risk. Also, conservative default values were adapted to prevent underestimation of the risk when site-specific values were not available. The risks of the six contaminants were calculated by API's Decision Support System for Exposure and Risk Assessment with several assumptions. In the crater-formed-area(Ac), the non-carcinogenic risks(i.e., HI values) of TNT(Tri-Nitro-Toluene) and Cd were slightly larger than 1, and for RDX(Royal Demolition Explosives), over 50. The total non-carcinogenic risk of the whole gunnery range calculated to a significantly high value of 62.5. Carcinogenicity of Cd was estimated to be about $10^{-3}$, while that of Pb was about $5\;{\times}\;10^{-4}$, which greatly exceeded the generally acceptable carcinogenic risk level of $10^{-4}{\sim}10^{-6}$. The risk assessment results suggest that an immediate remediation practice for both carcinogens and non-carcinogens are required before the reservoir construction. However, for more accurate risk assessment, more specific estimations on condition shifts due to the construction of the reservoir are required, and more over, the effects of the pollutants to the ecosystem is also necessary to be evaluated.

  • Recently, the demand for pollution-free demolition work of old reinforced concrete and steel structure has rapidly increased as the redevelopment of urban area has been accelerated. This study deals with linear shape charges for explosive jet cutting on steel structure. We have tested material and shape of steel structure, characteristics of thickness and strength, shape of linear shape charges, type of shape charges, cumulative charges, type of liner, stand-off distance, detonation method. effect of sound and vibration by air blast in explosive jet cutting method. So, We developed linear shape charges in order to take advantage of optimum explosive jet cutting condition. Shape charges were made of PETN explosives. We obtained the experimental formula to decide the amount of explosive needed for thickness of steel structure plate. There are prospects for application of the explosion curving technology under the open space conditions for dismantling the steel structure and steel bridge, scrapped old boats, which are going out of service.
