To elucidate the involvement of interleukin-$1{\beta}$ converting enzyme (ICE) in the course of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), we induced EAE by immunizing rats with an emulsion of rat spinal cord homogenate with complete Freund's adjuvant supplemented with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (H37Ra, 5mg/ml) and then examined the expression of ICE in the spinal cord of rats with EAE. In normal rat spinal cords, ICE is constitutively, but weakly, expressed in ependymal cells, neurons, and some neuroglial cells. In EAE, many inflammatory cells are positive for ICE, and the majority of ICE+ cells were identified as ED1+ macrophages. During this stage of EAE, the number of ICE+ cells in brain cells, including neurons and astrocytes, increased and these cells also had increased ICE immunoreactivity. These findings suggest that the upregulation of ICE in both brain cells and invading hematogenous cells is stimulated by a secretory product from inflammatory cells, and that this enzyme is involved in the pathogenesis of EAE via the production of IL-1 beta.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the group games on children's prosocial thinking and social ability. The subjects of this study were 30 four-five years old boys and' girls in S daycare center in Iksan of Jeonbuk province. Children in this study were divided into two groups. In order to measure children's pro social thinking. 'Skill Situation Measure' developed by McGinnis & Goldstein(l990) was used. In order to measure children's social ability, 'Preschool Socio-affective Profile(PSP)' developed by La Freniere. Dumas, Capuano & Dubeau(1992) was used. The tools were applied in two groups in pre-test, and the experimental group was given a total of 20 sessions (twice a week. for 10 weeks). The results of the study were as follows: 1. The experimental group children with group games showed a significant improvement in their prosocial thinking. 2. The experimental group children with group games showed a significant improvement in their social ability.
It is known that radiation therapy is a kind of treatment choices of the maxillofacial tumors. This study is designed to investigate the effects of irradiation on rat's tongue tissues as functional tissues which relate to taste, mastication, and pronunciation. 88 rats (Sprague Dawley branch, male) were divided into control group of 4 and experimental group of 84. Experimental group was singly exposed to Co-60 irradiation with 8, 13, 18 Gy in the head and neck region. Animals were sacrificed on 1 hour, 3 hours, 6 hours, 1day, 3 days, 7 days, and 28 days after the irradiation. The specimens were observed by histopathological examination employing H-E stain and Van-Gieson stain. The results were follows; 1. The tongue tissue were severely swollen on the 1 hour after irradiation, but gradually decreased in course of time. 2. The basal cells of epithelium of tongue proliferated at initial stage of irradiation, but gradually decreased. The Keratin layer were gradually increased. 3. The muscles within the tongue were severely degenerated at initial stage of irradiation, but gradually recovered almost normally. 4. The tissue changes after irradiation were gradually increased by the degree of irradiation.

An experimental loop operating with water at supercritical conditions(25MPa, $600^{\circ}C$ in the test section) is designed for operation in the research reactor LVR-15 in UJV Rez, Czech Republic. The loop should serve as an experimental facility for corrosion tests of materials for in-core as well as out-of-core structures, for testing and optimization of suitable water chemistry for a future HPLWR and for studies of radiolysis of water at supercritical conditions, which remains the domain where very few experimental data are available. At present, final necessary calculations(thermalhydraulic, neutronic, strength) are being performed on the irradiation channel, which is the most challenging part of the loop. The concept of the primary and auxiliary circuits has been completed. The design of the loop shall be finished in the course of the year 2007 to start the construction, out-of-pile testing to verify proper functioning of all systems and as such to be ready for in-pile tests by the end of the HPLWR Phase 2 European project by the end of 2009.
The purpose of this study is to investigate effects of instruction with stories on elementary school students' science learning and memory. For the purpose, this researcher sampled 3 classes in their 3th grade from an elementary school. Out of the three classes, two were designated as the comparative group consisting of 70 students and the other, the experimental group, 32 students. The former group was applied instruction treatment under the 7th national curriculum of education. The other group was instructed with a story book that contained stories students already knew which were somewhat rearranged to comply with contents of a relevant curricular course. Results of the study can be described as follows. First, academic achievement test was made immediately after the treatment to show that the experimental group was significantly higher in scores for memory and understanding in the section of 'Finding Constellations' that the other group. Second, the two groups' academic achievements in relation to the section, 'Finding Constellations' were tested 3 months after the treatment to show that the experimental group was significantly higher in scores for memory and understanding than the comparative group. Such achievements within the groups were tested 3 months after the treatment to find that both of the two groups didn't show statistically significant differences.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to survey on the influence of the laughing program on elementary school students' self-esteem and stress coping behaviors. Methods: In total, 43 children (grade 4~6 students) were recruited for self administered questionnaire. Questionnaire was composed of general characteristics, self-esteem, and stress coping behaviors. Ten week course of laughing program was scheduled to the Experimental group, meanwhile no program was given to the control group. Results: The median self-esteem scores in the experimental group was increased from 30.05 to 34 (Z=-2.375, p<.05). Meanwhile control group did not show significant change. The median inactive/avoidant coping scores in the experimental group was decreased from 10 to 9 (Z=-2.028, p<.05). Meanwhile control group did not show significant change in any items of stress coping behaviors. Conclusion: Laughing program may be helpful to improve stress coping behaviors through reducing inactive/avoidance coping as well as to strengthen self-esteem, especially among participants who had low self-esteem before the intervention.
Pneumconiosis is a sort of pulmonary fibrosis consequent to the inhalation of the respirable dusts. Thus, the pathogenesis of silicosis have concentrated largely on the early response of alveolar macrophage and the later fibroblastic stimulation. But the role of the other cells and continuing cell injury in the pathogenesis has not been fully studied. And the chemical factors such as prostaglandin, fibroblast stimulating factor and inhibiting factor and chemotaxin are also participated in the mechanism of pulmonary fibrosis in silicosis. In order to clarify the role of alveolar cells and prostaglandin, we investigated the changes of the cellularities in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and tissue pathology in the experimental silicosis with the time sequence. The experimental animals were divided into 3 groups; control group received only intratracheal injection of 0.5 ml saline, silica group received the intratracheal instillation of 40 mg silica with the same amount saline, and aspirin group received 450 mg/kg of aspirin after silica instillation. The results were as follows: 1) The total cells of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid in the silica group markedly increased in comparison with the control group, but there was no significant difference between the silica and aspirin groups. 2) The percentages of alveolar macrophages to the total number of cells in the silica group tended to be lower than those in the control group and also lower than those in the aspirin group at the 1st week after silica instillation. 3) The percentages of neutrophils to the total number of cells in the silica group were significantly higher than those in the control group during the entire period and also higher than those in the aspirin group at the 3rd day after silica instillation. 4) In the silica group, the percentages of lymphocytes to the total number of cells were increased 143 progressively with the time course and those were significantly higher than those in the control group from the 3rd week after silica administration. There were marked differences of lymphocyte percentages between the silica and aspirin groups at the 1st week after silica instillation. 5) The inflammatory change was observed in the rat lung at the 1st day after silica instillation. Also the silicotic nodule appeared in the silica group at the 1st week but we could not find out that nodule in the aspirin group at that time. The fibrotic changes in the rat lung tended to be increased progressively with the time course, therefore, the diffuse fibrotic pattern appeared in the whole field at the 20th week after silica instillation. 6) By the electron microscopy, there were gradual increases of phagosomes and vacuoles in the alveolar macrophage in the silica group as compared with the control group. These results suggest that the neutrophils and the lymphocytes have also participated in the pulmonary fibrosis even though the alveolar macrophage has a major role, and prostaglandin mediate the inflammation and pulmanary fibrosis in the experimental silicosis.
The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a standardized patients managed instruction program for a fundamentals of nursing. The standardized patients managed instruction was evaluated by using a quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group posttest design with two separate classes of sophomore students attending fundamentals of nursing classes at one baccaleureate nursing school in Korea. Control group was taught by traditional lecture/model instruction and experimental group was taught by standardized patient managed instruction. Data were collected from December, 1999 to July, 2000 using checklist developed by researcher on following areas; clinical nursing performance, communication skills, and learning motivation. There were 36 students in the experimental group and 40 students in the control group. Data analysis was done using SPSS WINDOW. The results were summarized as follows ; 1. Clinical nursing performances were evaluated by change position, back care and hot bag apply. The total score was statistically significant higher in the experimental group than the control group(t=3.325, p=.000). Thus hypothesis 1 was supported. 2. Communication skill was evaluated by professional attitude and ability to explain to patients. There was a statistically significant difference between the experimental group and the control group (t=4.232, p=.000). Thus hypothesis 2 was supported. 3. Learning motivation was evaluated by self-reported questionnaires. There was statistically a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group(t=3.024, p=.004). Thus hypothesis 3 was supported. In conclusion, this study suggests that standardized patients managed instruction is an effective learning method to nursing students. By utilizing a standardized patient managed instruction, learning can proceed in a more relaxed environment and reduce the risks to patients because student inexperience are avoided. It is recommended to develop more standardized patients cases for wider areas of nursing educational and evaluate the program with more students using logitudinal method.
This study was performed to examine the effects of daily commodities on student's scientific knowledges, inquiring abilities and attitude toward science in elementary school science classes. Daily commodities were collected and sorted properly so as to be readily utilized as experimental instruments in science classes. 164 students of elementary school 5th grade in Taejon City were selected for the study and they were evenly divided into two different groups, one for experiment and the other for comparation respectively. In every science classes throughout the school semester, the experimental group was supplied with daily commodities in addition to conventional instruments while the controlled group for comparation was supplied only with conventional instruments. Student's responses to the questionnaire were treated by statistical analysis and for that purpose the computer programme of SPSS WIN(6.0) was employed. The results of the study are as follows; 1. There is no expressive disparity appeared in the increments of scientific knowledge between experimental and controlled (comparing) groups. 2. The disparity of increments in inquiring ability between experimental and controlled groups is fairly expressive (P<0.05). The experimental group with daily commodities in science classes attained 5% more in increment of inquiring ability than the controlled group. 3. The disparity of the changes in student's attitudes toward science between two groups is remarkable (P<0.001). Student's attitude toward science was much more improved in experimental group than controlled group. The difference in improvement rate between two groups is 8%. The facts mentioned above make it evident that in elementary school science course daily commodities are very effective to enhance student's positiveness as far as both inquiring ability and attitude toward science are concerned. In this respect, a lot of efforts are expected to be made in searching and supplying further the proper daily commodities for elementary science courses. In addition, it is also called for that the examples of replacing conventional instruments with daily commodities will be introduced in future editions of elementary school science book and its guide book if possible.
The placement of different graft materials and/or the use of occlusive membranes to cover the extraction socket entrance are techniques aimed at reducing alveolar ridge resorption and enhancing bone formation. However, in spite of its clinical advantage, the use of graft materials in fresh extraction socket has been questioned because particles of the grafted material have been found in alveolar sockets with fibrous union. The purposes of this study were to evaluate whether alveolar ridge resorption following tooth extraction could be reduced and bone formation could be enhanced by the application of absorbable gelatin spongy or gelatin spongy soaked with platelet rich plasma(PRP) used as a space filler in clinical and radiographic aspects. Eighty patients who were scheduled for extraction of both third molars were participated and carried out by one experienced surgeon. Following extraction of teeth, one extracted socket were treated with gelatin spongy as an experimental group A and the other were treated with gelatin spongy and PRP as an experimental group B. The routine extracted socket were healed without any treatment as a control group. From the period of extraction to 12 weeks postoperatively, we examined the clinical course and radiographic evaluation on socket at regular interval. Both experimental groups showed faster wound healing process than control clinically. Vertical gingival height of the extraction socket were less changed statistically in both experimental groups than control. The horizontal width change of the extraction socket were not significant statistically in any group. Radiographic changes of the alveolar bone height were less changed in both experimental groups and bone density were showed higher than control. There were a little difference between experimental group A and B. In conclusion, absorbable gelatin sponge and with PRP were considered as having preservation effects of extraction socket and stimulation of bone formation process after extraction.
