The purpose of the present study is to develop a prototype automated scoring system for English writing. The system was developed for scoring writings of Korean middle school students. In order to develop the automated scoring system, following procedures have been applied. First, review and analysis of established automated essay scoring systems in other countries have been accomplished. By doing so, we could get the guidance for development of a new sentence-level automated scoring system for Korean EFL students. Second, knowledge base such as lexicon, grammar and WordNet for natural language processing and error corpus of English writing of Korean middle school students were established. Error corpus was established through the paper and pencil test with 589 third year middle school students. This study provided suggestions for the successful introduction of an automated scoring system in Korea. The automated scoring system developed in this study should be continuously upgraded to improve the accuracy of the scoring system. Also, it is suggested to develop an automated scoring system being able to carry out evaluation of English essay, not only sentence-level evaluation. The system needs to be upgraded for the improved precision, but, it was a successful introduction of an sentence-level automated scoring system for English writing in Korea.
$\sub$e/$\^$2/, that were results from those three sources of such imperfection. Especially to eliminate the differences in severity among many raters the randomization procedure of raters sample was very effective in enhancing the reliability of ratings with comparatively small groups of examinees and raters. And we also introduced the new rating methods, i.e. the 2-step diagnostic procedures to check the sizes of the reliability stability of raters and the sore adjustment method to enumerate the optimal mean values in rating the examinees.

In this study, we questioned what assessment types and scoring methods of science performance assessment(SPA) were being used in middle and high school, and how much these SPA scores were reliable(generalizable). To answer these questions, SPA data obtained from the seven schools were classified according to assessment type and scoring method. Based upon this classification, we analyzed the reliability by applying generalizability theory. The result, from the classification of assessment type and scoring method, showed that SPA types of the seven schools were divided into two types: paper-pencil type and task type. Paper-pencil type included answer(content)-restricted essay-type test solely. Task type has two parts: process and outcome assessment. As the results of analyzing scoring methods of the seven schools, there were two cases in the way of scoring methods: one case is scoring all essay-type items and performance tasks by one teacher, the other is scoring assigned performance tasks by two teachers. But the case of scoring assigned essay-type items or the case of cross scoring by two or more teachers were not found. The findings of the reliability analysis are as follows: (1) Effect of essay-type item to SPA score was larger than that of performance task. (2) There was remarkable difference among the seven schools' interaction effect of person and rater in scoring performance tasks. (3) Most of generalizability(reliability) coefficients of SPA for the seven schools were smaller than the acceptable generalizability coefficient(0.80). Therefore, the population of statistical parameters such as number of item, task and rater, should be increased for approaching the acceptable generalizability level.
The centennial of Alan Mathison Turing(23 June 1912 - 7 June 1954) is an appropriate occasion on which to assess his profound influence on the development of cognitive science. His contributions to and attitudes toward that field are discussed from the metamathematical perspective. This essay addresses (i)Turing's mathematical analysis of cognition, (ii)universal Turing machines, (iii)the limitations of universal Turing machines, (iv)oracle Turing machine beyond universal Turing machine, and (v)Turing test for cognitive science. Turing was a ground-breaker, eager to move on to new fields. He actually opened wider the scientific windows to the mind. The results show that first, by means of mathematical logic Turing discovered a new bridge between the mind and the physical world. Second, Turing gave a new formal analysis of operations of the mind. Third, Turing investigated oracle Turing machines and connectionist network machines as new models of minds beyond the limitations of his own universal machines. This paper explores why the cognitive scientist would be ever expecting a new Turing Test on the shoulder of Alan Turing.
Background: A new admission procedure was introduced to Korea when Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.) program was first established in 2011. In the new procedure, applicants are reviewed based on quantitative qualifications, which include Pharmacy Education Eligibility Test (PEET) scores, Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) scores, and grade point average (GPA), as well as qualitative qualifications such as essay writing, extracurricular activities including volunteer experiences. Purpose: This study aimed to find relationships between entrance qualifications and academic performance of pharmacy students. Method: Entrance qualifications and academic performance of 164 first-year students were analyzed from 2011 to 2013 at Catholic University of Daegu. Other characteristics such as age and gender were also considered in the study. Results: Only GPA and TOEIC scores showed positive Pearson correlation with academic performance, while PEET scores did not. Conclusion: GPA and TOEIC scores could potentially have predictive validity for academic performance in pharmacy school. PEET scores, however, should simply be considered as pre-entrance qualifications, without predictive validity for academic performance.

Middle and high school students' conceptual understanding about stoichiometry, gas laws, and diffusion was compared with essay type test and multiple choice test. Whereas achievement of high school students was higher in stoichiometry, that of middle school students who were expected to go to high schools was higher in gas laws and diffusion. When students' achievement was compared to that of American college students, Korean students' achievement was higher in stoichiometry and was similar in gas laws. These results indicate that algorithmic problem solving is more emphasized than conceptual understanding in high schools and that quantitative aspects focused in chemistry education are not helpful in concept understanding. Nevertheless relatively smaller difference between concept understanding and algorithmic problem solving for high school students in this study seems to be from concept learning in middle schools.
The concern with scientific mode1s has been growing in science education, and schematic models are frequently used to teach science concepts in secondary schools. The aim of this study is to investigate how well the scientifically gifted students understand scientific concepts through activities of modifying scientific models which we developed. Thirty 8th-grade students participated in the study, 15 in a control group and 15 in an experimental group. For the students in the experimental group, teaching material with activities of modifying models, while for the students in the control group, the teaching material with traditional activities such as explanation, problem solving, and reading. The teaching contents in physics for both groups were linear momentum. We used multiple-choice test and essay-type test to evaluate students' achievements after lessons, and then compared their achievements of both groups. Through the research, we could find a clue that model-modifying activities are helpful for the gifted students to enhance their understanding of physics concepts, although the statistics does not show meaningful difference between experimental and control groups.
The paper-and-pencil multiplce choise test has been widely used to identify gifted and talented student in Korea. Such test have several drawbacks; such~a s not being able to assess creative problem solving abilities and high level thinking abilities which are important characteristics of gifted students. The Korean Educational Development Institute (KEDI) developed a performance assessment which challenged traditional methods of identification. The 5-day summer camp was held to select gifted students for the Korean Minjok Leadership Academy. 211 students were evaluated in the aspects of creative problem solving abilities, high level thinking abilities, task commitments, and cooperativeness with various performance tasks, such as essay tests, conversations, oral examinations, computer simulations, puzzles, experiments, group discussions, debates, research reports, and games. As a result, it was found that there were several limitations of the performance assessment in terms of low reliability, requiring high costs and many professionals, and taking long times and large spaces. Expanding and continuing research should follow in order for a performance assessment to use widely as an identification methods because it assesses 'true' abilities of each individual student. follow in order for a performance assessment to use widely as an identification methods because it assesses 'true' abilities of each individual student.
This research applies a pre-trained bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT) handwriting recognition model to predict foreign Korean-language learners' writing scores. A corpus of 586 answers to midterm and final exams written by foreign learners at the Intermediate 1 level was acquired and used for pre-training, resulting in consistent performance, even with small datasets. The test data were pre-processed and fine-tuned, and the results were calculated in the form of a score prediction. The difference between the prediction and actual score was then calculated. An accuracy of 95.8% was demonstrated, indicating that the prediction results were strong overall; hence, the tool is suitable for the automatic scoring of Korean written test answers, including grammatical errors, written by foreigners. These results are particularly meaningful in that the data included written language text produced by foreign learners, not native speakers.
The purpose of this study is to investigate knowledge and use of English collocations in their relation to Korean college students' general English proficiency and writing abilities. Participants in the present study were 203 Korean college students. Their knowledge and use of English collocations were measured by a self-designed collocation test and an essay writing test. The findings were as follows: First, there was a significant difference in students' knowledge of collocations according to their general English proficiency. Students' performance in the collocation test increased as their level of proficiency increased. Second, there was a significant difference in students' knowledge of collocations according to their writing abilities. Students showed better performance in the collocation test as their level of writing abilities increased. Third, there was a significant difference in students' use of collocations according to their writing abilities. Students' collocation use in the writing test increased as their level of writing abilities increased. Fourth, there was a strong relationship between the students' knowledge of collocations and their general English proficiency and between the students' use of collocations and their writing abilities. Pedagogical implications of the study and suggestions for further research were discussed on the basis of the research findings.
