  • To make a long story short I made up my mind to experiment with a multimedia approach to my classroom presentations two years ago because my ways of giving instructions bored the pants off me as well as my students. My favorite ways used to be sometimes referred to as classical or traditional ones, heavily dependent on the three elements: teacher's mouth, books, and chalk. Some call it the 'MBC method'. To top it off, I tried audio-visuals such as tape recorders, cassette players, VTR, pictures, and you name it, that could help improve my teaching method. And yet I have been unhappy about the results by a trial and error approach. I was determined to look for a better way that would ensure my satisfaction in the first place. What really turned me on was a multimedia CD ROM title, ELLIS (English Language Learning Instructional Systems) developed by Dr. Frank Otto. This is an integrated system of learning English based on advanced computer technology. Inspired by the utility and potential of such a multimedia system for regular classroom or lab instructions, I designed a simple but practical multimedia language learning laboratory in 1994 for the first time in Korea(perhaps for the first time in the world). It was high time that the conventional type of language laboratory(audio-passive) at Hahnnam be replaced because of wear and tear. Prior to this development, in 1991, I put a first CALL(Computer Assisted Language Learning) laboratory equipped with 35 personal computers(286), where students were encouraged to practise English typing, word processing and study English grammar, English vocabulary, and English composition. The first multimedia language learning laboratory was composed of 1) a multimedia personal computer(486DX2 then, now 586), 2) VGA multipliers that enable simultaneous viewing of the screen at control of the instructor, 3) an amplifIer, 4) loud speakers, 5)student monitors, 6) student tables to seat three students(a monitor for two students is more realistic, though), 7) student chairs, 8) an instructor table, and 9) cables. It was augmented later with an Internet hookup. The beauty of this type of multimedia language learning laboratory is the economy of furnishing and maintaining it. There is no need of darkening the facilities, which is a must when an LCD/beam projector is preferred in the laboratory. It is headset free, which proved to make students exasperated when worn more than- twenty minutes. In the previous semester I taught three different subjects: Freshman English Lab, English Phonetics, and Listening Comprehension Intermediate. I used CD ROM titles like ELLIS, Master Pronunciation, English Tripple Play Plus, English Arcade, Living Books, Q-Steps, English Discoveries, Compton's Encyclopedia. On the other hand, I managed to put all teaching materials into PowerPoint, where letters, photo, graphic, animation, audio, and video files are orderly stored in terms of slides. It takes time for me to prepare my teaching materials via PowerPoint, but it is a wonderful tool for the sake of presentations. And it is worth trying as long as I can entertain my students in such a way. Once everything is put into the computer, I feel relaxed and a bit excited watching my students enjoy my presentations. It appears to be great fun for students because they have never experienced this type of instruction. This is how I freed myself from having to manipulate a cassette tape player, VTR, and write on the board. The student monitors in front of them seem to help them concentrate on what they see, combined with what they hear. All I have to do is to simply click a mouse to give presentations and explanations, when necessary. I use a remote mouse, which prevents me from sitting at the instructor table. Instead, I can walk around in the room and enjoy freer interactions with students. Using this instrument, I can also have my students participate in the presentation. In particular, I invite my students to manipulate the computer using the remote mouse from the student's seat not from the instructor's seat. Every student appears to be fascinated with my multimedia approach to English teaching because of its unique nature as a new teaching tool as we face the 21st century. They all agree that the multimedia way is an interesting and fascinating way of learning to satisfy their needs. Above all, it helps lighten their drudgery in the classroom. They feel other subjects taught by other teachers should be treated in the same fashion. A multimedia approach to education is impossible without the advent of hi-tech computers, of which multi functions are integrated into a unified system, i.e., a personal computer. If you have computer-phobia, make quick friends with it; the sooner, the better. It can be a wonderful assistant to you. It is the Internet that I pay close attention to in conjunction with the multimedia approach to English education. Via e-mail system, I encourage my students to write to me in English. I encourage them to enjoy chatting with people all over the world. I also encourage them to visit the sites where they offer study courses in English conversation, vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, reading, and writing. I help them search any subject they want to via World Wide Web. Some day in the near future it will be the hub of learning for everybody. It will eventually free students from books, teachers, libraries, classrooms, and boredom. I will keep exploring better ways to give satisfying instructions to my students who deserve my entertainment.

  • In order to develop the animation industry, it is essential to encourage other related areas because all related industries can create synergy effects through exchanging their business. The magazine industry dealing with animation is one of them since the animation magazine plays an critical role in providing information and knowledge as well as analyzing market and industry from the practical viewpoint. But, there is only one magazine working in Korea, and it has never been researched so far even though over 20 years has passed since its first publication in 1995. It is Animatoon that is published by the company of Akom Production Co. who produced animation from the mid-1980s and Nelson Shin, the CEO of Akom, has worked as the Chief Editor. This research deals with Animatoon from the first issue till vol. 115 which was published in 2015, and tries to explore the characteristics. The result is as follows. First, Animatoon provides items to understand every article easily. Second, it provides original English articles written by foreign correspondents. Third, it provides different type of articles such as terminology explanation, production pipeline related knowledge, information about newly-released animation DVDs and so on. In addition, it is found out that Animatoon has small amount of advertisements. These characteristics shows that Animatoon helps subscribers to judge the contents of articles easier, tries to focus on the global trend, and provides basic and critical information. Therefore it can be said that Animatoon has enough features to be judged as the specialized magazine. First, Animatoon has its own specialized area, which is animation. Second, considering the type of articles, Animatoon tries to have all the parties concerned as its subscribers. Although, the amount of ads in Animatoon is small, only animation related ads are run through the whole issues.

  • The importance of a using the visual media in English education has been increased. By an importance of Characters in English language content, the more effort is needed for a learner to show the English pronunciation and a realistic implementation. In this paper, we tried to review the Syntax-based Educational Contents Authoring System. For the more realistic lip-sync character, 3D character to enhance the efficiency of the education was constructed. We used a chart of the association structure analysis of mouth's shape. we produced an optimized 3D character through a process of a concept, a modeling, a mapping and an animating design. For more effective educational content for 3D character creation, the next research will be continuously a 3d Character added to a hand motion and body motion in order to show an effective communication example.

  • Recently, the development of electronic teaching materials and the demand of digital learners have led the needs on the education contents that replace learning from character information and the change of an information design method for this. Chinese character education in the traditional schooling mainly focuses on writing and memorization (semantic memory). This way that the stories do not exist has brought the learners' recognition that Chinese character is difficult to learn. Meanwhile, for a language study such as English, cross-media development between printed materials and audio-visual materials has been actively introduced. The method that extends episode memories along with memorization through a story is widely used. Therefore, this content suggests a prototype, which is broken away from an existing way of learning Chinese character that mainly focuses on writing, one sided instruction and information cramming. This makes learners learn through a story from printed materials and animation. Furthermore, it suggests a method that extends episode memories through Chinese education contents based on IoT explaining the principle of Chinese character by combining IT technology (information and communications, IoT) and education contents on block toys.

  • In terms of class, race, or gender, critical literacy takes seriously the problem of inequality and injustice embedded in texts. Texts are considered as tools that are used for maintaining the status quo by constructing and communicating our identities, particularly in relation to others. While reading texts and identifying our roles in society, some feel empowered, and others, marginalized. Thus we need to challenge the characterization and the message included in those texts by asking problem-posing questions. In this paper I have demonstrated how to read and teach four versions of "Snow White" from a critical literacy stance. By the use of problem-posing questions, students are led to discover that one of Grimms' fairy tales, the original version of "Snow White," was written from the perspective of men with power, thus marginalizing women in general, as well as the seven dwarfs. Through a critical analysis of Snow White's personality, the typical theme of fairy tales - good is rewarded while evil is punished - should be challenged. In the animation, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, power is given to the marginalized people in the original, the seven dwarfs and women in general. In "Snow Night,"a feminist short story, women in general are empowered while men, who should be judged by their looks, are powerless. "Snow-Drop"reminds us of the original, but challenges stereotypes, prejudices, and the theme inherent in the story. In those three stories many parts from the original are rewritten from the perspectives of the marginalized, but still some people are described prejudicially. So students should be guided to write another story from a new perspective. When those four works were taught with problem-posing questions in a university, this approach proved to be quite successful: most students acknowledged the effectiveness of critical literacy in teaching literary works.

  • This is the in-depth research dealing with Animatoon, the only animation-specialized magazine in Korea. By examining articles provided under the 'Animatoon Report' category, which is one of article categories set by the publisher, this research tries to find out the topic of articles and examine the tendency of topic. 'Animatoon Report' is chosen because the category title does not clearly show characteristics of articles, but has the second largest number of articles among all categories. First, the articles of the first ten years (1995-2005) has the largest number of pages as well as images, which means each article of this period tries to enrich its contents. Second, the role of magazine reporters are not critical considering the number of articles written by reporters are smaller than those made by the editorial department. Third, articles tries to deal with diverse issues and are mostly placed in front of the magazine. Fourth, in early days, articles used to provide the 3~5 lines of introductory summaries, but changed into provide the lead, the Korean and English subtitle, and so on. Fifth, articles mostly focus on issues of animation and Korea rather than other areas and countries. The results on the basis of article type are as follows. Among the types of people, work, organization/company, event, policy/industry, and etc, the policy/industry type has the largest amount of articles, and articles on the policy and those on the industry shows similar number of articles. Second, the event type has the second largest number of articles even though there are several separate categories only for the event. Third, articles in the et cetera type are often seen in early days because Animatoon who did not systemize the company itself focused on animation history and production techniques. Fourth, articles both on the people and the work type are consistently seen through the whole time period, but those on organization/company and event has more and more articles as time passes. In conclusion, it is possible to mention that the 'Animatoon Report' type shows more interest in policy and industry, and its interest on both issues are consistently seen from 2001 to 2015.

  • This study aims to analyze the multicultural content of the Korean Elementary School Textbook revised in 2015. This study abstracted the framework of multicultural factors for analysis of multicultural contents from the research on "Revision Guidelines by Analysis of Multicultural Factors in Secondary Curriculum and Textbook". The analyzed textbook is the integrated winter textbooks for both the first and second grades revised curriculum in 2015. Several findings were represented as follows: first, the frequency of multicultural content displayed five times in first grade and nineteen times in second grade respectively. Second, the analyzed textbooks did not include contents directly associated with multiculturalism. Activities and experience is important in the acceptance of unfamiliar cultures Thus, multicultural contents' frequency of within textbooks is very crucial. Finally, the revised curriculum focused on activities and experiences about the theme and content in the textbook and was developed around block chassis. For teaching the textbook content, teachers must perfectly understand textbooks through teacher training. The textbooks of reflecting right values on multiculturalismIn. this respect, elementary school curriculum and textbook content should be improved by supplementary revision fitting for the growth of humanity in the multicultural era.

  • This paper is one of the types of 'sharing economy', a social economic model that borrows and shares things, spaces, and services from the development of the 4th Industrial Revolution. Through sharing of empty space and time in the city, I would like to suggest a way to reduce the closure of small business owners in order to create jobs, which is one of urban problems in the community. We also build a platform that utilizes the free time and space of buildings through space sharing, one of the types of sharing economy, and provides education programs for start-up education, promotion, marketing, and consulting by matching small business owners with building owners. Therefore, in this paper, by sharing the space and time, the landlord and the small business can share the profits of the small business by reducing the business owner's closure and the job creation plan. Coaching urban regeneration was proposed.

  • Korea, as a leader of Internet and game sector in IT industry, has been playing an important role in increasing its industrial development. This country has won the first place in wireless broadband usage and contributed to Internet game industry development. This means that Korean use smartphones most. It is juveniles that use Internet and smartphones most among Korean who use teenage., the number of the teenagers who overuse smartphones or Internet has surpassed 200,000. The number of the adolescents who spend more time using smartphone and Internet is about 180,000 and the number of the teens who are over-dependent to smartphone having trouble living their lives is over 22,000. The SNS usage rate of the contents that teens are most likely to use has accounted for over 80 percent. Among teens, SNS is being considered as a major means that builds relationship due to smartphone technology and the prevalence of smartphones. However, the use of SNS among youths has two sides; one is positive, the other negative. Not only does SNS have a positive function that it keeps relationship but it also has a negative function that it can lead to smartphone addiction.
