  • Objective : The goal of this study was to investigate neurological mechanism of emotional regulation and to examine the relationship between the regulation and sensory processing. Subjective : Emotional regulations are mainly processed in limbic system, particularly the basal-lateral group of amygdala takes on a major role in the regulations. The basal-lateral group of amygdala links to thalamus directly and/or indirectly which processes sensory information together. This sensory information connects to orbital and medial prefrontal cortex. Inadequate sensory processing may cause difficulties in emotional regulations and behaviors because of a circuit linking the amygdala, the thalamus, and the orbital and medial prefrontal cortex. These difficulties and impairments has been reported in neurological studies for children with ASD and ADHD. Conclusion : Neurological states are different between the normal children and children with ASD and ADHD and these represent various aspects in sensory processing, emotional regulations and behaviors. Thus, therapists working with children with ASD and ADHD need to understand mechanisms of sensory processing and emotional regulations in order to provide adequate treatments.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide definition of proprioception, foundations and roles of neuroanatomy, and systemical review of proprioceptive activities in sensory integration intervention. Proprioception exists in muscle, ligaments, joints and skin and it plays important role in controling body movements and interacting with environment during child development. Proprioception interacting with tactile and vestibular systems contributes to the change of muscle tone, postural control, refinements of planning and praxis. Children who are deficit in proprioceptive processing would seek hypo-responsive proprioceptive input or avoid hyperactive one. Outcome of poor proprioceptive input would cause the problems of praxis and postural control. Because proprioception provides information about the position and movement of body and limb it is important for development of body scheme and motor planning. It also influences the arousal and emotional tone. Sensory integration intervention which provides rich proprioceptive activities will improve the level of arousal and enhance motor planning.

  • In order to design the products that impression or emotional taste influence the purchase, feedback is necessary as useful data for better idea sketches through users emotional evaluation in early stage of design process. On the other hand, it was required to make judgments individually in previous image evaluations for emotional evaluations such as semantic differential method (SD method) that objects have been considered as classified tendency. However those SD methods are not enough to reflect flexible human capability with similarity judgment in object perceptual process. Therefore, this study proposes a classification of stimulus based on intuitive judgment and a hierarchical image evaluation method based on analysis of hierarchical process and fuzzy integration. The evaluation will be conducted through the order of process, intuitive classification of objective stimulus and items, definition of representatives in each class. Evaluation for each image of the stimulus, calculation of prior raking based on fuzzy integration. The evaluation supportive software is developed to conduct this evaluation process under interactive environments.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of maternal risk factors for adverse childhood experiences on children's emotional and physical abuse and neglect as well as parenting stress. Methods : This is a secondary data analysis study utilizing raw data from the 2017 National Survey of Child and Family Life Experiences. A total of 1,937 mothers with at least one adverse childhood experience were categorized into low-risk (1-3), moderate-risk (4-6), and high-risk (7 or more) groups to examine the differences in children's emotional and physical abuse and neglect and parenting stress and identify the influencing factors through regression analysis. Results : Maternal adverse childhood experiences were 50.4% in the low-risk group, 39.8% in the medium-risk group, and 9.7% in the high-risk group. Child emotional abuse was 45.0%, child physical abuse was 13.2%, child neglect was 3.5%, and parenting stress was 2.13 (±0.61) on average. Adverse childhood experiences were significantly more likely to be associated with emotional and physical abuse, neglect, and parenting stress in the medium- and high-risk groups than in the low-risk group. The regression analysis showed that the model explained 35% of child emotional abuse, 25% of child physical abuse, 19% of child neglect, and 16% of parenting stress. Conclusion : The higher the risk of adverse childhood experiences of parents, the more their children experience emotional abuse, physical abuse, child neglect, and parenting stress.

  • This study aims to examine the reading materials of high school English textbooks to propose the integration of the literary texts into reading materials in the classroom for development of communicative competence. Five kinds of high school English textbooks were critically examined in terms of three factors -limited text types, deficit of emotional adjectives and non-authenticity- selected by the author as characteristics of non-communicative language teaching materials. With regard to text types, more than half of the reading materials were expository and simple narratives. This imbalance of text types led materials to the deficit of emotional vocabulary. These factors seem to be closely related to the issue of authenticity of reading materials. Compared to the authentic texts, fabricated texts are likely to make reading vapid and boring task. On the basis of these results, some pedagogical suggestions are made.

  • Purpose: This study explored how and why young and middle-aged adults disclose depressive feelings to others. In particular, we investigated the role of social norms to see whether using mobile instant messaging (MIM) could lower the perceived barriers of emotional disclosure. Furthermore, the motivations of emotional disclosure via MIM were compared between young and middle-aged adults. Methods: A total of 255 Koreans (128 middle-aged people, 127 young adults) participated in an online survey. Pearson's correlation coefficients, paired t-tests, SPSS PROCESS macro, and exploratory factor analysis were used to examine the relationships among the key variables. Results: The perceived social norms were found to be a significant deterrent in disclosing depressive feelings to others. However, there was a significant interaction effect between generations and perceived social norms. Although young adults with low social norm awareness were more likely to disclose depressive feelings via MIM, emotional disclosure among middle-aged adults increased with higher levels of perceived social norms. Also, different motivations were observed. Conclusion: The results confirmed the significant effect of social norms as well as generational differences when using MIM as a channel of emotional disclosure.

  • In the discipline of design science, the integration of cognitive, semantic, and affective elements is crucial in the conception and development of a product. Affective components in IT artefacts have attracted researchers' attention, but little attention has been given to Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This research was conducted to identify emotions in web-based GIS, and determine design influences on the emotions using Kansei engineering (KE). In the evaluation procedure, ten web-based GIS were used as specimens, and 20 Kansei words were used as emotional descriptors in the Kansei checklist. 50 participants were asked to rate their emotional responses towards the specimens on the Kansei checklist. Principal Component Analysis was used to discover the semantic structure of Kansei, in which dynamism and spaciousness were identified. Significant Kansei concepts were identified using Factor Analysis, in which dynamic & well-organized, refreshing, spacious, professional, and nautical-look were identified. Partial Least Square analysis has assisted the research in discovering the significant design influence to the Kansei. These findings provide designers and other stakeholders with valuable knowledge for strategizing future web-based GIS designs that incorporate user emotions.
