  • To reduce time-to-market, more and more embedded system developers and system-on-chip designers rely on microprocessor-based design methodology. ARM processor has been a major player in this industry over the last 10 years. However, there are many restrictions on developing embedded software using ARM processor in the early design stage. For those who are not familiar with embedded software development environment or who cannot afford to have an expensive embedded hardware equipment, testing their software on a real ARM hardware platform is a challenging job. To overcome such a problem, we have designed VMA (Virtual ARM Machine), which offers easier testing and debugging environment to ARM based embedded system developers. Major benefits that can be achieved by utilizing a virtual ARM platform are (1) reducing development cost, (2) lowering the entrance barrier for embedded system novices, and (3) making it easier to test and debug embedded software designs. Unlike many other purely software-oriented ARM simulators which are independent of real hardware platforms, VMA is specifically targeted on SYS-Lab 5000 ARM hardware platform, (designed by Libertron, Inc.), which means that VMA imitates behaviors of embedded software as if the software is running on the target embedded hardware as closely as possible. This paper will describe how VMA is designed and how VMA can be used to reduce design time and cost.

  • Recently, together with a new advent of embedded processor developed to support specific application area, and it evolution, a new study of software development to support the embedded processor and its commercial use has been revitalized. Specially, In a mobile device that is built-in embedded processor, software management is as important as hardware management for the limited power/energy. In this paper, we suggest that the code generation technique considering the energy dissipation through the verified retargetable compiler backend tool, EXPRESSION. For this goals, we describes the efficient code generation patterns and showed the variable performance results.

  • Recently use of embedded software has been increased to different areas. The requirements and demands for the embedded software have also been altered. In the past, the embedded system was used in simple task and small portable devices but now, the usage of the embedded software has expanded to do much more complex and precise actions in a variety platform environment. The embedded software enables multiple softwares to be integrated into one and at the same time, control it. Currently the biggest challenges embedded software is facing during its development process is the improvement in product production and quality assurance. Our research team has developed an embedded software based on the component (technology or methodology) which both improves production capabilities as well as quality. Additionally, we also established and constructed a reliability test system which can effectively test the quality of the developed embedded software to further increase its competiveness.

  • Together with a new advent of embedded processor developed to support specific application area and it evolution, a new research of software development to support the embedded processor and its commercial challenge has been revitalized. Retargetability is typically achieved by providing target machine information, ADL, as input. The ADLs are used to specify processor and memory architectures and generate software toolkit including compiler, simulator, assembler, profiler, and debugger. The EXPRESSION ADL follows a mixed level approach-it can capture both the structure and behavior supporting a natural specification of the programmable architectures consisting of processor cores, coprocessors, and memories. And it was originally designed to capture processor/memory architectures and generate software toolkit to enable compiler-in-the-loop exploration of SoC architecture. In this paper, we designed the class-based ADL based on the EXPRESSION ADL to promote the write-ability, extensibility and verified the validation of grammar. For this works, we defined 6 core classes and generated the EXPRESSION's compiler and simulator through the MIPS R4000 description.

  • Core-A is 32-bit synthesizable processor core with a unique instruction set architecture (ISA). In this paper, the Core-A ISA is introduced with discussion of useful features and the development environment, including the software tool chain and hardware on-chip debugger. Core-A is described using Verilog-HDL and can be customized for a given application and synthesized for an application-specific integrated circuit or field-programmable gate array target. Also, the GNU Compiler Collection has been ported to support Core-A, and various predesigned platforms are well equipped with the established design flow to speed up the hardware/software co-design for a Core-A-based system.

  • In military weapon systems, control sticks for weapon operation are essential. This paper presents the design and performance evaluation of a control stick for weapon systems using RS-422 communication and an embedded processor. This control stick is ergonomically designed, considering the hand dimensions of Korean pilots and mission convenience. The circuitry and software based on RS-422 communication were designed using an embedded processor. A prototype of the control stick was manufactured and subjected to a series of tests, including basic performance tests and various environmental tests such as altitude, high temperature, low temperature, temperature shock, humidity, rain, vibration shock, and acceleration, all of which met the required standards.

  • In company with the demand of powerful processing units for embedded systems, the method to develop embedded software is also required to support the demand in new approach. In order to improve the resource utilization and system performance, software modeling techniques have to consider the features of hardware architecture. This paper proposes a partitioning technique of UML-based software models, which focus the generation of the allocatable software components into multiprocessor architecture. Our partitioning technique, at first, transforms UML models to CBCFGs(Constraint-Based Control Flow Graphs), and then slices the CBCFGs with consideration of parallelism and data dependency. We believe that our proposition gives practical applicability in the areas of platform specific modeling and performance estimation in model-driven embedded software development.

  • There are strict evaluation processes before using new processors to satellites. Engineers evaluate processors from various viewpoints including specification, development environment, and cost. From a viewpoint of computation power, manufacturers provide benchmark results with processors, and engineers decide which processors are adequate to their satellites by comparing the benchmark results with requirements of their satellites. However, the benchmark results depends on a test environment of manufacturers, and it is quite difficult to achieve similar performance in a target environment. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the processors in the target environment. This paper compares performance of a processor, AT697F/LEON2, in software testbed (STB) with three development boards of XC2V/LEON3, GR712RC/LEON3, and GR740/LEON4. Seven benchmark functions of Dhrystone, Stanford, Coremark, Whetstone, Flops, NBench, and MiBench are selected. Results are analyzed with hardware and software properties: hardware properties of core architecture, number of cores, cache, and memory; and software properties of build options and compilers. Based on the analysis, this paper describes a guideline for choosing processors for next generation satellites.

  • Developing highly cost-efficient and reliable embedded systems demands hardware/software co-design and co-simulation due to fast TTM and verification issues. So, it is essential that Platform-Based SoC design methodology be used for enhanced reusability. This paper addresses a reusable SoC platform based on OpenCores soft processor with reconfigurable architectures for hardware/software codesign methodology. The platform includes a OpenRISC microprocessor, some basic peripherals and WISHBONE bus and it uses the set of development environment including compiler, assembler, and debugger. The platform is very flexible due to easy configuration through a system configuration file and is reliable because all designed SoC and IPs are verified in the various test environments. Also the platform is prototyped using the Xilinx Spartan3 FPGA development board and is implemented to a single chip using the Magnachip cell library based on $0.18{\mu}m$ 1-poly 6-metal technology.

  • With the rapid development of wired or wireless Internet, various kinds of resource constrained mobile devices, such as cellular phone, PDA, homepad, smart phone, handhold PC, and so on, have been emerging into personal or commercial usages. Most software to be embedded into those devices has been forced to have the characteristic of flexibility rather than the fixedness which was an inherent property of embedded system. It means that recent technologies require the flexible embedding into the variety of resource constrained mobile devices. A document processor for XML which has been positioned as a standard mark-up language for information representation on the Web, is one of the essential software to be embedded into those devices for browsing the information. In this paper, a framework for configurable XML processor called EmXJ is designed and implemented for flexible embedding into various types of resource constrained mobile devices, and its advantages are compared to conventional XML processors.
