  • This paper describes the characteristics of a poly 3C-SiC micro heater which was fabricated on $AlN(0.1{\mu}m)/3C-SiC(1.0{\mu}m)$ suspended membranes by surface micro- machining technology. The 3C-SiC and AlN thin films which have wide energy bandgap and very low lattice mismatch were used sensors for high temperature and voltage environments. The 3C-SiC thin film was used as micro heaters and temperature sensor materials simultaneously. The implemented 3C-SiC RTD (resistance of temperature detector) and the power consumption of micro heaters were measured and calculated. The TCR (thermal coefficient of the resistance) of 3C-SiC RTD is about -5200 $ppm/^{\circ}C$ within a temperature range from $25^{\circ}C$ to $50^{\circ}C$ and -1040 $ppm/^{\circ}C$ at $500^{\circ}C$. The micro heater generates the heat about $500^{\circ}C$ at 10.3 mW. Moreover, durability of 3C-SiC micro heaters in high voltages is better than pt micro heaters. A thermal distribution measured and simulated by IR thermovision and COMSOL is uniform on the membrane surface.

  • Ion bombarded inorganic materials for LC alignment has been researched as it provides controllability in a nonstop process for producing high-resolution displays. Many optically transparent insulators such as $SiOx$ and a-C:H have been investigated as potential candidates for inorganic alignment materials. Even so, LC orientation on a new material with superior capacity is required to produce high-performance displays. Many inorganic materials with high permittivities can reduce the voltage losses due to the LC alignment layer that are a trade-off for its capacitance. The minimum voltage for device operation can be applied to the LC under low external voltage using these materials. This means that low power consumption for LCD applications can be achieved using a high-k alignment structure in which the LC can be driven effectively with a low threshold voltage. Among the many other potential high-k oxides, HfO2 is considered to be one of the most promising due to its remarkable properties of high dielectric constant, relatively low leakage current, large band gap (5.68 eV), and high transparency. Due to these characteristics, HfO2 can be used in LC alignment to increase the capacitance of the inorganic alignment layer for low-voltage driving of LCs.

  • WBAN(Wireless Body Area Network) is a Wireless Sensor Network for supporting various applications around body within 2~3m which consists of medical and non-medical device. MAC in WBAN environment should satisfy requirements such as low power consumption, various transmission rate, QoS, and duty-cycle, efficiently distribute frequency band, be strong at traffic load and save energy. This paper proposes AQ(Adaptive Queuing) MAC superframe structure for efficient energy use, considering the increase of traffic load. The simulation result also show that transmission rate and average MAC delay rate is improved comparing IEEE 802.15.4 MAC with AQ MAC.

  • Electro-optic characteristics of reflective hybrid aligned liquid crystal (LC) cell driven by fringe field using a nematic LC with positive dielectric anisotropy have been studied. Optimized optical configurations are achieved by using a single polarizer, half-wave film and a cell with quarter-wave retardation. The simulation results shows an optimum cell retardation of $0.30{\mu}m$. This value may allow a practical cell gap larger than $3{\mu}m$, which makes it easy to control in the manufacturing process. Furthermore, this LC cell with optimized cell parameters shows low wavelength dispersion and the contrast ratio greater than 5 over exists about $100{\circ}$ in vertical direction and $160{\circ}$ in horizontal direction. Also, when using the LC with positive dielectric anisotropy rather than negative dielectric anisotropy, the display shows low power consumption and fast response time.

  • This work proposes an integrated high frequency divider with an inductive peaking technique implemented in a current mode logic (CML) frequency divider. The proposed divider is composed with a master-slave flip-flop, and the master-slave flip-flop acts as a latch and read circuits which have the differential pair and cross-coupled n-MOSFETs. The cascode bias is applied in an inductive peaking circuit as a current source and the cascode bias is used for its high current driving capability and stable frequency response. The proposed divider is designed with $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS process, and the simulation used to evaluate the divider is performed with phase-locked loop (PLL) circuit as a feedback circuit. A divide-by-two operation is properly performed at a high frequency of 20 GHz. In the output frequency spectrum of the PLL, a peak frequency of 2 GHz is obtained witha divide-by-eight circuit at an input frequency of 250 MHz. The reference spur is obtained at -64 dBc and the power consumption is 13 mW.

  • This paper describes a 150-Mb/s monolithic optical receiver for plastic optical fiber link using a standard CMOS technology. The receiver integrates a photodiode using an N-well/P-substrate junction, a pre amplifier, a post amplifier, and an output driver. The size, PN-junction type, and the number of metal fingers of the photodiode are optimized to meet the link requirements. The N-well/P-substrate photodiode has a 200-${\mu}m$ by 200-${\mu}m$ optical window, 0.1-A/W responsivity, 7.6-pF junction capacitance and 113-MHz bandwidth. The monolithic receiver can successfully convert 150-Mb/s optical signal into digital data through up to 30-m plastic optical fiber link with -10.4 dBm of optical sensitivity. The receiver occupies 0.56-$mm^2$ area including electrostatic discharge protection diodes and bonding pads. To reduce unnecessary power consumption when the light is not over threshold or not modulating, a simple light detector and a signal detector are introduced. In active mode, the receiver core consumes 5.8-mA DC currents at 150-Mb/s data rate from a single 3.3 V supply, while consumes only $120{\mu}W$ in the sleep mode.

  • A dual-modulus prescaler divides the input signal by one of the moduli according to the control signal. In this paper, a new fast dual-modulus prescaler is proposed. The proposed prescaler has a ratioed-NOR structure different from a conventional ratioed-NAND structure. The proposed one can operate at a higher speed by using parallely connected NMOSs instead of using series-connected ones. HSPICE simulation results using HYUNDAI 0.65(m 2-poly 2-metal CMOS process parameters show that the maximum operating frequency of the proposed dual-modulus prescaler is 2.8㎓ with power consumption of 40.7㎽ at 5V supply voltage at $25^{\circ}C$. The proposed dual-modulus prescaler can be utilized for the frequency-synthesis in cellular radio front-ends.

  • This paper describes an electronic compass using micromachined X- and Y-axis micro fluxgate sensors which were perpendicularly aligned each other to measure X- and Y-axis magnetic fields respectively. The fluxgate sensor was composed of rectangular-ring shaped magnetic core and solenoid excitation(49 turns) and pick-up(46 turns) coils. Excitation and pick-up coil patterns which were formed opposite to each other wound the magnetic core alternatively to improve the sensitivity and to excite the magnetic core in an optimal condition with reduced excitation current. The magnetic core has DC effective permeability of ~1000 and coercive field of ~0.1 Oe. The magnetic core is easily saturated due to the low coercive field and closed magnetic path for the excitation field. To decrease the difference of induced second harmonic voltages from X- and Y-axis, excitation condition of 2.8 $V_{P-P}$ and 1.2 MHz square wave was selected. Excellent linear response over the range of -100 $\mu$T to +100 $\mu$T was obtained with 210 V/T sensitivity. The size of each micro fluxgate sensor excluding pad region was about 2.6${\times}$1.7 $mm^2$ and the power consumption was estimated to be 14 mW.W.

  • VCO(Voltage Controlled Oscillator) is one of the main components governing the size, performance and power consumption of telecommunication devices. As the devices become much smaller, VCO need to have much smaller size with better characteristics. Buried type passive components of L,C,R were developed previously and the structure of these components are good for minimizing the size of VCO. Our own library of passive components is used in simulation and fabrication of VCO circuit, and surface mounted components like varactor diode are analysed using the measurement circuit designed by ourselves. Two-Dimensional simulation of VCO circuit and local three-Dimensional structure simulation are performed and their relation is obtained. In structure of multi-layered VCO, some components governing the characteristics of VCO are selected and placed on the top of oscillator for the good tuning process. In resonator part, the stripline structure and low loss glass/ceramic material are used to get higher Q value. In our research, a VCO oscillates in the 2.3∼2.36 GHz band is developed.
