  • In Korea, the protection systems against the instability of the nation's power system are insufficient in contrast with many other countries. In addition, there have just been studies carried out on detecting power system instability, while only a few studies pertaining to protection plans against instability exist. This paper focuses on systems to protect against the instability phenomena in the Korean power system. In this paper, we survey possible contingencies in the Korean power system and suggest outline and specs of the SPS (System Protection Scheme) against faults on the 765 kV line, based on simulations. It is concluded that event-based SPS for transient stability is appropriate for the Korean power system. In the simulations, the most severe contingency on the Korean power system is the fault on 765 kV transmission lines. If one of these lines is tripped by a fault, synchronism may be lost on the power plants near this line because of heavy power flow carried by them. In addition, undervoltage in the Metropolitan region is a serious problem in this case since this region receives about half its total power flow through these lines. In order to prevent a synchronism loss, some power plants have to be rejected according to the situations in the simulations.

  • High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) devices make it possible to operate with no electrical loss by resistance. If, however, the applied current is over its critical current, the phase of HTS devices is changed to normal state, so called, quench. In this case, since resistance of HTS is increased abruptly, it can not be avoidable to damage the whole apparatus. In this study, quench detector to protect HTS devices was proposed. We designed the quench detecting circuit and tested the performance of the circuit. The detecting circuit was consisted of Op-Amp and low pass filter etc, to detect very low voltage around $1{\mu}V$. The circuit detected effectively the low voltage when over current is applied to HTS tapes. At the next step, we are going to apply and test the circuit to protect the prototype HTS cable.

  • In renewable energy system such as flywheel energy storage system, wind power and solar power, the motor/generator is the important key for offering the electric energy to the electric loads. For example, the heavy and large flywheel is rotated by electromagnetic torque of pemanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) and, in case of a breakdown of electric current, the PMSM used as generator supplies electric energy for the various electric utilities using mechanical rotation energy of the flywheel. Thus, design of a motor/generator should be performed in effort to reduce cogging torque and electromagnetic loss for high efficiency. In our paper, a slotless permanent magnet synchronous motor/generator (SPMSM/G) with output power 15kW at the rotor speed 18000rpm is designed from electromagnetic analysis and dynamic performance analysis. In analytical approach, design parameters such as back electro-motive force (back EMF), inductance and electromagnetic torque are derived from analytical method which is one of the electromagnetic analysis method. And using the design parameters, this paper deal with system design considering the driving characteristics and electric load in required power. Finally, the analytical results are verified by the experiment and finite element method (FEM).

  • The Different-volume- V-connection transformer is known as an electric power source that can supply 3-phase electric power and single-phase electric power at the same time. Usually, we use two single-phase transformers that have different volumes. In this paper, we propose the use of a 3-phase 5-leg transformer with the different-volume- V-connection. And, we examine the magnetic properties of the 5-leg core model with the different-volume- V-connection. The magnetic properties of cores with the different-volume- V-connection are compared with those with the delta-connection. In order to express the magnetic anisotropy of the core materials and to calculate the iron loss directly, the two-dimensional vector magnetic property is considered with the E&SS modeling in the simulation.

  • This paper is studied on a novel power factor correction (PFC) AC-DC converter of high efficiency by soft switching technique. The input current waveform in the proposed converter is got to be a sinusoidal form composed of many a discontinuous pulse in proportion to the magnitude of a ac input voltage under the constant switching frequency. Therefore, the input power factor is nearly unity and the control method is simple. The proposed converter adding an electric isolation operates with a discontinuous current mode (DCM) of the reactor in order to obtain some merits of simpler control, such as fixed switching frequency, without synchronization control circuit used in continuous current mode (CCM). To achieve the soft switching (ZCS or ZVS) of control devices, the converter is constructed with a new loss-less snubber for a partial resonant circuit. It is that the switching losses are very low and the efficiency of the converter is high, Particularly, the stored energy in a loss-less snubber capacitor recovers into input side and increases input current from a resonant operation. The result is that the input power factor of the proposed converter is higher than that of a conventional PFC converter. This paper deals mainly with the circuit operations, theoretical, simulated and experimental results of the proposed PFC AC-DC converter in comparison with a conventional PFC AC-DC converter.

  • The electrical power of nuclear power plant consists of Safety related power systems and Non-Safety related power systems. The safety related power systems are designed to have sufficient capacity to safely shut down the unit and to mitigate the effects of an accident assuming loss of off-site power. This paper presents the operation scheme of the safety related power system for several plant conditions in Korean Next Generation Reactor and reviews the diversity of power supply to the safety related bus.
