Several factors which influence baseline instability (BLI) phenomenon in MR drive were investigated experimentally. In particular, the role of surface topography on BLI was studied in detail. The r esults show that BLI is linearly proportional to the surface waviness with a spatial wavelength of 0.4 to 5.0 min. BLI becomes worse as the surface waviness increases. On the other hand, surface roughness which has a spatial wavelength below 25 $\mu$ m has no effect on BLI. The results further show that the effect of bias current on the BLI is amplified on the disk with worse surface waviness. The disk surface waviness is dependent on the manufacturing process and becomes an inherent surface property of media. The disk surface waviness. therefore, can not be overlooked when evaluating the media for a high-performance hard disk drive. In general, waviness is reduced mainly during grinding and polishing process during manufacturing.

This research presents an analytical model to investigate the stability due to the ball bearing waviness in a rotating system supported by two ball bearings. The stiffness of a ball bearing changes periodically due to the waviness in the rolling elements as the rotor rotates, and it can be calculated by differentiating the nonlinear contact forces. The linearized equations of motion can be represented as a parametrically excited system in the form of Mathieu's equation, because the stiffness coefficients have time-varying components due to the waviness. Their solution can be assumed as a Fourier series expansion so that the equations of motion can be rewritten as the simultaneous algebraic equations with respect to the Fourier coefficients. Then, stability can be determined by solving the Hill's infinite determinant of these algebraic equations. The validity of this research is proved by comparing the stability chart with the time responses of the vibration model suggested by prior researches. This research shows that the waviness in the rolling elements of a ball bearing generates the time-varying component of the stiffness coefficient, whose frequency is called the frequency of the parametric excitation. It also shows that the instability takes place from the positions in which the ratio of the natural frequency to the frequency of the parametric excitation corresponds to i/2 (i= 1,2,3..).
The effect of surface texture on elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) point contact of a ball Joint mechanism in small reciprocating compressors is studied numerically by using multigrid method. Pressure and film thickness profiles have been calculated for surface roughness with waviness of different orientations and transverse ridge and dent at minimum and maximum Hoes M parameter conditions. The influence of the amplitude and the wavelength of the surface roughness was also studied. Results show that the oblique waviness with orientation angle of 30$^{\circ}$generates the smallest minimum film thickness as compared with those of longitudinal, transverse, and other oblique roughness. The influence of transverse waviness on the minimum film thickness is smaller than for the longitudinal waviness case.

This research presents an analytical model to investigate vibration due to ball bearing waviness in a rotating system supported by two or more ball bearings, taking account of the centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment of the ball. The waviness of rolling elements is modeled by the sinusoidal function, and it is incorporated into the position vectors of the race curvature center. The Hertzian con tact theory is applied to calculate the elastic deflection and nonlinear contact force while the rotor has translational and angular motions. Both the centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment of the ball and the waviness of the rolling elements are included in the kinematic constraints and force equilibrium equations of a ball to derive the nonlinear governing equations of the rotor, which are solved by using the Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg algorithm to determine the new position of the rotor. The proposed model is validated by the comparison of the results of the prior researchers. This research shows that the centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment of the ball plays the important role in determining the bearing frequencies, i.e. the principal frequencies, their harmonics and the sideband frequencies resulting from the waviness of the rolling elements of ball bearing. It also shows that the bearing vibration frequencies are generated by the waviness interaction not only between the rolling elements of one ball bearing but also between those of two or more ball bearings constrained by the rotor.

Despite the exceptional mechanical properties of individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs), the effective properties of CNT-reinforced composites remain below expectations. The composite's microstructure has been identified as a key factor in explaining this discrepancy. In this contribution, a method for generating representative volume elements of aligned CNT sheets is presented. The model captures material characteristics such as random waviness and entanglement of individual nanotubes. Thus it allows studying microstructural effects on the composite's effective properties. Simulations investigating the strengthening effect of the application of a pre-stretch on the CNTs are carried out and found to be in very good agreement with experimental values. They highlight the importance of the nanotube's waviness and entanglement for the mechanical behavior of the composite. The presented representative volume elements are the first to accurately capture the waviness and entanglement of CNT sheets for realistically high volume fractions.

Since the mechanical strength and stiffness of wire-woven bulk Kagome (BK) have been theoretically estimated by assuming that WBK is composed of straight struts, the analytical solutions occasionally give substantial errors as compared with the experimental results. The struts of WBK are helically formed, which results in errors in the estimations In this study, for accurately predicting the mechanical properties of WBK, the effects of waviness and brazed part are taken into account for estimating the strength and stiffness of WBK. The results are compared with the measured experimental results and the results estimated by a finite element analysis performed on a unit cell under periodic boundary conditions (PBC).
In this study, the effect of laminate thickness on the compressive behaviour of composite materials is investigated through systematic experimental work using the stacking sequences, $[O_4]_{ns},{\;}[45/0/-45/90]_{ns}$ and $[45_n/0_n/-45_n/90_n]_s$ (n=2 to 8). Parameters such as fibre volume fraction, void content, fibre waviness and interlaminar stresses, influencing compressive strength with increasing laminate thickness are also studied experimentally and theoretically. Furthermore the stacking sequence effects on failure strength of multidirectional laminates are examined. For this purpose, two different scaling techniques are used; (1) ply-level technique $[45_n/0_n/-45_n/90_n]s$ and (2) sublaminate level technique $[45/0/-45/90]_{ns}$. An apparent thickness effect existes in the lay-up with blocked plies, i.e. unidirectional specimens ($[O_4]_{ns}) and ply-level scaled multidirectional specimens ($[45_n/0_n/-45_n/90_n]_s$). Fibre waviness and void content are found to be main parameters contributing to the thickness effect on the compressive failure strength. However, the compressive strength of the sublaminate level scaled specimens ($[45/0/-45/90]_{ns}$) is almost unaffected regardless of the specimen thickness (since ply thickness remains constant). From the investigation of the stacking sequence effect, the strength values obtained from the sublaminate level scaled specimens are slightly higher than those obtained from the ply level scaled specimens. The reason for this effect is explained by the fibre waviness, void content, free edge effect and stress redistribution in blocked $0^{\circ}$ plies and unblocked $0^{\circ}$ plies. The measured failure strengths are compared with the predicted values.
This paper presents a numerical model for investigating the structural dynamics response of a rigid rotor supported on deep-groove ball bearings. The numerical model was used to investigate the influence of race waviness on the dynamic characteristics of a rotor ball bearing system, which is very important from a design viewpoint. The forth-order Runge-Kutta numerical integration technique was applied to determine the time displacement response, Poincare map, and frequency spectra. The analysis demonstrated that the model can be used as a tool for predicting the nonlinear dynamic behavior of a rotor ball bearing system under different operating conditions. The results of this study may help further understanding of the nonlinear dynamics of a rotor bearing system.

A printing defect known as fluting (or waviness) of the web printed by heatset web offset printing process is one of the chronically serious problems deteriorating print quality. In this paper, fluting occurrence on uncoated papers was explored in terms of many printing conditions including drying temperature, fountain solution amount, ink supply, and press configurations. For this purpose, fluting on prints from real press runs was appraised in a quantitative manner. As results, ink supply was a distinctive factor for fluting such that the lower ink amount, the milder fluting. However increase in fountain solution seemed to make fluting severer while the effect of drying temperature was inconsistent for each paper. This result might indicate variable drying requirements for each paper. Thereby it was suggested that the optimum drying conditions related to the printabilities of each paper need to be established to minimize fluting potential. A press with short dryer and drastic cooling unit produced higher fluting. Suggestions for future work were given along with interpretation for the results.
