Students' Use of Notebook Computers in the College Classroom: Benefits and Pitfalls

  • This study aims to understand the overall experiences of students who use notebook computers in class by using a qualitative approach. Interview data were collected from 23 Korean college students at a Korean university, who use notebook computers in their classes; the data were analyzed through the constant comparison method. The results from this study can be categorized into two themes: the positive and negative effects of using a notebook computer in class, and different perspectives on the effects of using a notebook computer in class. The positive effects of notebook computer usage were specified as production of lecture notes, performing searches for information, management of learning materials, and effective time management. However, behaviors such as perusing other works not associated with the class were indicated as negative effects. The participants had different perceptions about the effect of notebook computer usage in increasing academic performance, although they were satisfied in their experience with notebook computers in general. These results imply that appropriate methods of technology usage are needed and that the support of an instructor is essential to achieve fully beneficial use of notebook computers in class.

멀티미디어 활용(活用)을 위한 유아교육(幼兒敎育) 환경(環境) (A Study on the multimedia settings in Kindergarten)

  • Computers have become an indispensable part of everyday lives in 21st century. This is particularly true in early childhood education; multimedia use in kindergarten has rapidly grown in the last decade. Although ample research had been done on the issues of teachers' role in multimedia settings and selecting quality materials, few studies have been done on the proper environment for multimedia use in early childhood education. In this regard, this research examines the current status of multimedia use-animated illustration films, CD-ROM titles, and internet-in kindergarten. In addition, computer environment in kindergarten is investigated in order to provide guidelines for appropriate facilities and equipments. For smooth integration of computer activities into a school system, computers are located in ordinary classrooms in more than half of kindergarten in Seoul. Computers are used in independent lab settings in the last of the kindergarten in Seoul and there are four different types of lab settings. Among them computer at perimeter style is preferred for the ease of student-teacher, and student-student interactions. The importance of environment for early childhood education cannot be overestimated. It is so critical for early childhood education that the people in this field regard the environment as 'the third teacher' next to parents and teachers. Therefore the multimedia environment should also be considered seriously for the maximum use in early childhood institutions.

e-러닝을 위한 교육시설의 정보통신 인프라 고도화 계획에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Advancement Planning of Telecommunications Infrastructure of Educational Facilities for e-Learning)

  • As a study on the advancement planning for the telecommunications infrastructure of the educational facilities for the purpose of the proliferation of e-learning, this study was conducted with the intents of preparing for the design guidelines to be considered in the initial stage of an architectural design for applying WLANs(wireless LANs), which play a role as the international standard for next generation of telecommunications, to the educational facilities and of making a proposal for changes of the existing computer rooms according to the appearance of new teaching and learning tools, for example, digital textbooks, and the proliferation of personal information devices. In this study, the design guidelines were made by analyzing the elements to be applied to architecture designs as well as understanding the trend of the cabling, pathways and spaces requirements in the area of telecommunications after examining the relevant international standards, such as ANSI and TIA, etc., in order for applying WLANs to the educational facilities. In addition, a field survey was conducted targeting on the elementary schools in 'C' city in order to suggest a proposal for the improvements of operations and maintenance of the existing computer labs and computers. As the results of analyzing the data from the field study, it was surveyed that the following matters should be urgently improved in order for the schools to be developed as Ubiquitous schools in the future: First, the biggest hold-up is how to maintain the desktop computers well. Second, there are some limitations far the students to use the computers enough due to the lack of the number of computers. Third, the computer education for the students is limited to instructing the students in training themselves only for the functions of each kind of application software.

유아컴퓨터 교육환경 조성에 관한 교사의 욕구 탐색 ; 질적 접근 (Teacher's Viewpoints on the Desirability of Computers In the Early Childhood Classroom: A Qualitative Study)

  • This study investigated the viewpoint of teachers on the desirability of computer education in the early childhood classroom. The subjects were 8 kindergarten teachers in Seoul and Kyong'gi Province who used computers in the classroom. Nondirective and open-ended interview methods were used for data collection. Five steps or stages of viewpoints were found: step1-teachers want to have computers in the classroom but have no particular purpose in mind; Step 2-teachers want the children to play with the computers as if it were a toy; Step 3-teachers want to use any programs that are in the computer; Step 4-teachers want to use the computer more purposefully for educational goals; Step 5-teachers want to unify the early childhood curriculum through the multi-media system.

고등학교 수학과 교육을 위한 CAI 프로그램 개발 연구 - 정적분을 중심으로 - (A Study on the Development of Computer Assisted Instruction for the High School Mathematics Education)

  • In mathematics education, teaching-learning activity can be divided largely into the understanding the mathematical concepts, derivation of principles and laws acquirement of the mathematical abilities. We utilize various media, teaching tools, audio-visual materials, manufacturing materials for understanding mathematical concepts. But sometimes we cannot define or explain correctly the concepts as well as the derivation of principles and laws by these materials. In order to solve the problem we can use the computer. In this paper, ′the process of the length of curve being equal to the sum of the vectors when intervals get smaller′ and ′the process of calculating volume of spinning curve by using definite integral.′ Using the computers is more visible than other educational instruments like blackboards, O.H.Ps., etc. Also it can help students with solving mathematical problems intuitively. Consequently more effective teaching-learning activity can be done. Usage of computers is the best method for improving the mathematical abilities because computers have functions of the immediate reaction, operation, reference and deduction. One of the important characters of mathematics is accuracy, so we use computers for improving mathematical abilities. This paper is about the program focused on the part of "the application of definite integral", which exists in mathematical curriculum the second and third grade of high school. When this study is used for students as assisting materials, it is expected the following educational effect. 1. Students will have precise concepts because they can understand what they learn intuitively. 2. Students will have positive thought by arousing interests of learning because this program is composed of pictures, animations with effectiveness of sound. 3. It is possible to change the teacher-centered instruction into the student-centered instruction. 4. Students will understand the relation between velocity and distance correctly because they can see the process of getting the length of curve by vector through the monitor. For the purpose of increasing the efficiencies and qualities of mathematics education, we have to seek the various learning-teaching methods. But considering that no computer can replace the teacher′s role, teachers have to use the CIA program carefully.

This paper is about the program focused on the part of "the quadratic function graph", which exists in mathematical curriculum the middle school. When this program is used for students, it is expected the following educational effect. 1, Students will have positive thought by arousing interests of learning because this program is composed of pictures, animations with effectiveness of sound. 2. This program will cause students to form the mathematical concepts correctly. 3. By visualizing the process of drawing the quadratic function graph, students understand the quadratic function graph structually. 4. Through the feedback, the recognition ability of the trigonometric function can be improved. 5. It is possible to change the teacher-centered instruction into the student-centered instruction. For the purpose of increasing the efficiencies and qualities of mathmatics education, we have to seek the various learning-teaching methods. But considering that no computer can replace the teacher′s role, tearchers have to use the CIA program carefully.

초·중등학교 교육용 멀티미디어 컨텐츠의 활용과 표준 개발 환경 (Development of Standard Multimedia Studio for Primary and Secondary Educational Contents)

  • New media is an emerging industry sector. It sits at the nexus of what has become a main vehicle of the Knowledge Based Economy. the crossroads where the use of interactive multimedia technology meets the traditional uses of media. The current Education information Act provided school with PC, multimedia labs and connection to internet. Having such a facility in schools encourage teachers and students to use computers more often. Teachers demand for more educational multimedia contents than they can find in the market. Although there are many good contents, teachers find them unfit or inflexible for their curriculum. The purpose of this study is to identify the elements of standard multimedia studio facilities to develop multimedia contents in primary and secondary schools. The result of this study will provide guidelines for schools to facilitate their multimedia studio for teaching and learning activities, and developing contents for effective use of their facilities.

컴퓨터와 수학교육에서 환경의 설계 (Designing a Environment in Computers and Mathematics Education)

  • 이 논문에서는 컴퓨터와 수학교육을 바라보는 두 가지 서로 다른 입장에 대하여 알아보고, 그 중 구성주의적(constructivist) 입장에서 컴퓨터 환경의 설계를 논의한다. 이를 위하여 컴퓨터와 수학교육을 위한 바람직한 기본 원리를 구성주의(constructionism) 시각으로 살펴본다. 나아가 이러한 바람직한 기본 원리를 '함수화'라는 용어를 사용하여 규정하고, 이를 통해 컴퓨터 환경 설계 방법을 모색해 본다. 이 연구를 통하여 우리는 설계 과정에 대한 논의가 부족한 상태로 학교 현장에 도입되는 기존 컴퓨터용 소프트웨어들에 대한 문제점을 인식하고, 새로운 환경의 설계 원칙과 과정에 대해 논의하고, 실제 구현한다. 그 예로 LOGO와 DGS를 새로운 대상의 도입을 통하여 통합하는 방안에 대하여 논의한다. 이 논문에서 구현한 새로운 대상은 LOGO와 DGS의 함수화 명령 체계를 모두 이용하여 만들 수 있고, 동시에 LOGO와 DGS의 함수화 명령 체계으로 변화하고 조작할 수 있는 대상이다.

제7차 고등학교 수학교과서의 컴퓨터 활용에 관한 분석 (Analysis of computer applications in the 7th high school textbooks on mathematics)

  • 21세기에 적합한 인간형을 키워나가기 위해 교육과정의 변화는 시대적 흐름이라 할 수 있다. 이와 같은 교육 개혁은 수학교과에 있어서도 많은 변화를 요구하였고, 그러한 변화에 따라 교과서의 개정이 요구되었다. 이와 더불어 제7차 교육과정에서는 학생들이 수학교육에 있어 컴퓨터, 계산기 등을 활용하여 학습할 수 있도록 지도하는 것을 교육과정 목표의 한가지로 제시하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 교과서 내용 중에서 컴퓨터 활용에 대한 분석을 통해 컴퓨터에 대한 접근 방법과 그 내용의 장단점을 알아보았다. 주요 내용은 16종 교과서의 단원 분석, 단원에 따른 컴퓨터 활용 현황, 수학 관련 프로그램, 컴퓨터의 사용방법, 프로그램의 사용내용, 교과서별 컴퓨터 사용, 인터넷 사용현황 등을 정리하였다.

  • In this paper, we present the theory of computers and mathematics education based on the concept of microworlds for mathematics education. We lust look back some previous papers published in the journal of the Korea society of mathematical education series A and else where. Then we present the new view points regarding mircroworlds and mathematics curriculems, microworlds and mathematics teaching and teaming, microworld based problem centered teaming, and microworld based diagnostics and debuggings. We use JavaMAL microworld that is designed to make LOGO and dynamic geometry system in one microworld to give some examples to explain the necessary mathematics educational needs fur designing microworlds for mathematics education. The JavaMAL microworld is a web based microworld that is programmed using JAVA, and the user on use script language, menus, keyboard, and mouse interaction to use the environment.
