Global Common Knowledge and Skills in Elementary Mathematics (국제 공통의 초등 수학 내용 요소 추출)

  • The purpose of this study was to specify knowledge and skills that are expected to be learned by students worldwide at the elementary level of Mathematics. This was achieved by extracting knowledge and skills commonly expected to know and perform in elementary school level by analyzing elementary math curriculum of twelve countries that vary geographically and economically. Based on the data gathered and analyzed, the common domains extracted from this study in elementary level Mathematics include Number and Operations, Geometry, Measurement and Data. And knowledge and skills that children are expected to achieve in each domain by the end of primary school were listed. This research showed that for elementary level Mathematics, the majority of the curricula had the commonalities in Number and Operations, Geometry, Measurement and Data. Though this study had the limitations of analyzing curriculum documents open to public, this study will offer the ground for discussion on the elementary mathematics education in a global context.

Activity-Theoretical Analysis on the Relation of Small Group Activity on Gifted Elementary Student's Concept Formation of Prime and Composite Numbers (소집단 활동체계와 초등영재의 소수와 합성수 개념 형성 사이의 관계 분석)

  • The aim of this study was to investigate how the small group activity system influences individual to form concepts of prime number and composite number through activity theory on learning process of mathematically gifted 5th-grade students. Student's worksheets, recorded video, and interview were gathered and transcribed for analyzing data. Process of concept formation and using symbol behavior were used to derive the stage of mathematical concept from students, and the activity system and stage of concept formation process were schematized through analysis of whole class activity system and small group activity system based on activity theory. According to the results of this study, two students who were in different activity groups separated into the state of semi-concept and the stage of complex thinking respectively, and therefore, social context and the activity system had effects on process of concept formation among the students.

  • This study problematizes the youth‘s politico-cultural process of identification as becoming in the context of candle demonstration in Seoul, 2008. We examine their ethical subjectivity, communicative subjectivity and political subjectivity based on our analysis of depth interviews of teenage activists in the candle demonstrations. It is suggested that instead of naming the teens as the historical consequence of so-called 386 generation, or social product in the neo-liberal economic and educational conditions, we need to understand the complexities and dynamics of the youth’s practice of identity politics: subjective pain and anxiety in daily life, creation and sharing of pleasure and fun of peer group comunication are mixed into the pursuit of justice in their social activation of generation/gender politics.

Learning from Instruction: A Comprehension-Based Approach (지시문을 통한 학습: 이해-기반 접근)

  • A comprehension-based approach to learning assumes that incoming information and background knowledge are integrated to form a mental representation which is subsequently used to incorporate new knowledge. It is demonstrated that this approach can be validated by comparing human and computational model performance in the prompt learning context. A computational model (ADAPT-UNIX) based on the construction-integration theory of comprehension (Kintsch, 1988; 1998) predicted how users learn from help prompts which are designed to assist UNIX composite command production. In addition, the comparison also revealed high similarity in composite production task performance between model and human. Educational implications of present research are discussed on the basis of the fact that prompt instructions have differential effect on learning and application as background knowledge varies.

A Study on the Level of ADL in Community Dwelling Elderly Registered in a Public Health Center (일개 시 보건소에 등록된 재가노인의 일상생활 동작수행 정도에 대한 조사연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the level of activities of daily living (ADL) in a group of community dwelling elderly. Methods: The subjects were 100 low-income elderly registered in a public health center. The data were analyzed using the SPSS/PC program. Results: The results were as follows: 1. The basic ADLs of the subjects were scored at 7 levels, and the mean score was 6.24 out of 7 points. The subjects did not necessarily require help from others, but might have needed more times or instrumental assists to perform ADLs. The lowest ADL score was reported on walking up to the stairs (5.05), for which the subjects did not need physical assistance, but needed a certain degree of supervision. The highest score was reported on self eating (6.74), followed by bowel management (6.60). 2. The mean IADL score of the subjects was 1.77 out of 4 points. indicating that the subjects were very independent in performing IADLs, without help from others. 3. In relation to general characteristics, the level of ADLs of the subjects was significantly different by age (F=6.65, P=.000), main activities (F=6.36, P=.001), perceived health status (P=4.66, P=.012), educational background (F=4.64, P=.03), marital status(F=4.62, P=.005), and major household income (F=4.15, P=.002). 4. The subjects' level of IADLs in relation to their general characteristics was significantly different by perceived health status (F=8.08, P=.001), major activities (F=7.33, P=.000), age (F=6.18, P=.000), family context (F=3.53, P=.018), religion (F=3.10, P=.019), marital status(F=2.62, P=.055), and major household income (F=2.31, P=.049).

  • The e-Learning quality assurance is a part of responsibility for education in latest information age, and should be understood as a basic direction for qualitative enhancement rather than quantifiable expansion. In such a context, this study sought to survey latest trends of e-Learning quality assurance activities deployed around overseas countries, so that it could give possible implications on how to plan and perform e-Learning quality assurance in Korea. So, this study focused on surveying actual conditions, coverage, target and useful indices of e-Learning quality assurance activities deployed by 9 institutions across 5 countries, and characterizing those activities across 5 countries. As a result, this study could find out its implications such as acquisition of various resources available for e-Learning, nationwide consolidation of e-Learning quality assurance activities, development of specialists in e-Learning quality assurance, and choice and focus for e-Learning quality assurance system. In other words, it was found that e-Learning quality assurance should be approached from nationwide standpoint in the interest of better educational quality, rather than from viewpoint of task.

The Spatio-temporal Changes in the Sphere Influence of the Secondary Education in Geochang-Gun, Gyeongnam (거창군 중등교육세력권의 시.공간적 변화)

  • In Gcochang-Gun, the population decrease, due to a rural exodus phenomenon, has led to the absolute decline in the numbers of both primary and secondary schools and students. However, the high schools in Geochang-Gun show an unusual characteristic that the students from other areas outside Geochang-Gun cover about 25% of the total students studying in Geochang-Gun. This is quite contrary to the contention that one of the major factors hindering the development of rural areas is generally the inferior condition of education. In this context, this paper aims to explore the spatio-temporal changes in the sphere of influence of the secondary education with special reference to Geochang-Gun, Gyeongnam. Most importantly Geochang High School and Geochang Daesung High School account for over 98% of the students coming from other areas outside Geochang-Gun's cross-border counties. This means that the sphere of influence of the Geochang's secondary education is dependent largely upon the two private academic high schools.

Early Childhood Teachers' Experience of Community-based Group Consulting for Curriculum Implementation (교육과정 실행을 위한 커뮤너티 기반 그룹컨설팅에 참여한 유아교사들의 경험)

  • Purpose: This research aims at exploring what early childhood teachers experienced in the teachers' community for the national-level curriculum implementation while participating in group consulting. Method: The participants were 10 teachers working at the day care centers located in the capital area. They had joined this study for 9 months, sharing and practicing various strategies related to curriculum implementation through community-based group consulting. Result: First, the teachers came to understand the frame of curriculum from a different point of view. Second, the teachers focused not only on the contents of education but on the methods of education, and shared the forest of feasibility crossing educational plans and the reality. Third, they found various methods to solve the problems and learned transformation ways in the context of curriculum implementation. Fourth, it was verified that nevertheless, there was still complicated and situational dilemma in curriculum implementation. Conclusion: The community-based group consulting was meaningful for the early childhood teachers because it enables them to enhance their professional techniques for the curriculum implementation.

  • In this study, we hope to reveal teacher knowledge necessary to address student errors and difficulties about ratio and rate. The instruments and interview were administered to 3 in-service primary teachers with various education background and teaching experiments. The results of this study are as follows. Specialized content knowledge(SCK) consists of profound knowledge about ratio and rate beyond multiplicative comparison of two quantities and professional knowledge about the definitions of textbook. Knowledge of content and students(KCS) is the ability to recognize students' understanding the concept and the representation about ratio and rate. Knowledge of content and teaching(KCT) is made up of knowledge about various context and visual models for understanding ratio and rate.

  • The effort to generate new values in this age of digital technology characterized by rapid changes in information and knowledge demands transformations not only in the sociocultural and educational spheres but also specifically in the field of arts and culture education. One of the greatest transformations is emphasis on integration and consilience among different fields which has impacted the field of arts and culture, giving birth to the practice of arts and culture education. Digital technology actively utilizes in lots of subjects, which, also becomes a challenging factor for the field of arts and culture education. In this context, this study theoretically considered to approach music technology to use for the field of arts and culture education. Utilization of music technology takes interdisciplinary approaches combining various subjects in the field of arts and culture education. Considering the current circumstances in which there is a lack of teaching and learning methodologies which reflect the unique, specialized nature and the intrinsic originality of the field of arts and culture education. It is deemed that by accumulating more case studies applying music technology in practice to a wider variety of targets and situations. Music technology will serve the role of an important a learning tool for the arts and culture education field.
