Recently, the whole world is facing an unprecedented moment of opportunity, so-called The Fourth Industrial Revolution. As emphasized in the World Economic Forum held in January of 2016 at Davos, the Fourth Industrial Revolution is not merely a changes of technological devices. The fundamental of the revolution is new, innovative, and visionary business models which change the whole systems dramatically. One of the greatest challenges is to feed an expected population of 9 billion by 2050 in a impactful way. The system should be sustainable as well as beneficial in improving the lives of people in the food chain along with the ecological health of environment. The technological advances of the Fourth Industrial Revolution are expected to improve our food system. The smart farm technology such as precision planting and irrigation techniques will improve the yields of food materials. The smart food transportation and logistics systems will substantially improve the safety and human nutrition. The adaptation the Fourth Industrial Revolution technology will induce the smart supply chains, smart production, and smart products in food industry due to its flexibility and standardization. This will lead the manufactures to adapt to customers' changing product specifications and traceable services in a timely manner.
Corrosion of steel reinforcement is the most important mode of concrete structures damages. It strongly depends on the composition and physicochemical properties of the cementitious medium. The use of waste materials as lightweight aggregates in concrete is environmentally recommended in polluted environments such as marine and/or industrial atmospheres in order to reduce its porosity and ensure the requested protection of reinforcing steel. The present study investigated the effect of waste cork addition on corrosion resistance of steel rebar in mortar specimen prepared in the laboratory. The main objective of this study was to improve the corrosion resistance of reinforcing steel. Another objective of this study was to valorize this ecological product and preserve the environment. Results obtained from various electrochemical tests indicated that the presence of a fine cork powder substantially improved the corrosion resistance of steel in the mortar contaminated by chloride ions. This improvement was reflected by a notable decrease in corrosion current density and a shift of corrosion potential of the steel towards more noble values. Moreover, the presence of a fine cork powder in the mortar had no adverse effect on its mechanical properties.
Vegetation established through the natural process, such as Quercus mongolica, Pinus densiflora, Q. variabilis, Q. acutissima, Carpinus laxiflora, Q. aliena and Q. serrata communities and artificially introduced vegetation, which are composed of Larix leptolepis and P. rigida plantations, are established in the mountainous land of the Mt. Songnisan National Park. On the other hand, the developed lands, which are consisted of agricultural folds, residential areas, commercial areas related to tourism, etc. appear in the lowland around streams. Based on the spatial distribution of vegetation, the southern district, which is attributed to Naesongni-myun by administrative system, showed higher natural degree and vegetation diversity. However, most of the other districts, which are attributed to Cheongcheon- and Chilseong-myuns, are covered with the Korean red pine forest, a product of artificial influence, and plantation also occupied higher percentage. Thereby both vegetation diversity and natural degree are lowering. A result of ordination by DCA showed that sands tended to be arranged by depending on the topographic condition. Species diversity of plant communities was higher in broad-leaved stands rather than in coniferous ones and in stands of the early stage than in ones of the late stage. The result of analysis on vegetation dynamics implied that vegetation of this region would be dominated by Carpinus laxiflora, Quercus mongolica and Pinus densiflora communities in the future. However, considered occurrence the of disturbance and response of vegetation on that, this estimation may different somewhat from an actual situation. Conservation strategies of the Mt. Songnisan National Park were discussed in viewpoints of landscape ecology, and conservation of major plant communities and biodiversity.
Exposure assessment for three major active ingredients used for humidifier disinfectants, polyhexamethylene guanidine (PHMG), oligo(2-(2-ethoxy)ethoxyethyl guanidinium chloride (PGH), and 5-chloro-2-methylisothiazol-3(2H)-one/2-methylisothiazol-3(2H)-one (CMIT/MIT) mixture, was conducted in a bedroom using an air sampler for a refined risk assessment. The experimental site was selected to reflect consumer exposure conditions. Aerosols formed by a humidifier were sampled during 8 hr at 7.5 L/min. Absorbed PHMG and PGH by the sampler were quantified using a spectrophotometric method, and high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection was used for CMIT/MIT. Three exposure scenarios were assumed for adding humidifier disinfectants to the humidifier water at 1, 2, and 10 times the volume recommended by the product suppliers, and the humidifier was on at its maximum rate of producing aerosols in order to consider reasonable worst-cases. The sampled mass of PHMG and PGH ranged 200 to $2,800{\mu}g$ and 140 to $1,900{\mu}g$, respectively, under different exposure conditions, whereas the absorbed mass of CMIT/MIT was barely detected at the detection limit of 0.11/0.29 mg/L, only at 10 times the recommended level. The resulting risk quotients for PHMG and PGH ranged 1,400 to 20,000 and 1,000 to 13,000, indicating that health risks could be significant. For CMIT/MIT mixture, risk quotients were much smaller than estimated by assuming that they are conservative in the indoor environment, probably due to oxidative reactions. The refined exposure assessment presented here may provide a useful tool for assessing risks posed by active ingredients in spray-type biocidal products.
Soil contamination has continuously increased worldwide, thus the remediation for the contaminated soils has risen steadily. However, the consideration of ecological safety for the remediated soils and their agricultural uses has been very limited. Therefore, this study was to investigate the influences of selected environmentally-friendly agricultural materials, organic by-product fertilizer (OF), charcoal (CC), and biochar (BC), as soil conditioners for improving poor chemical properties of fuel-oil removed soil by land farming technique. Two different remediated soils, remediated soil A (RSA) and remediated soil B (RSB), were selected. Soil texture of both RSA and RSB was sandy loam. The chemical properties of RSA and RSB were as follows: soil pHs of 8.5 and 8.7, soil organic matter contents of 7.4 and 5.5g $kg^{-1}$, total nitrogen contents of 0.26 and 0.10g $kg^{-1}$, available phosphorus concentrations of 7.2 and 4.4mg $kg^{-1}$, and exchangeable calcium concentrations of 14.8 and $11.7cmol_c$$kg^{-1}$, respectively. Results of the properties were not reached for the optimal values for cultivating crops that were recommended by National Academy of Agricultural Science at Rural Development Administration in Korea. However, after applying OF, CC, and BC, the chemical properties of soils were selectively improved, which were that soil organic matter content and available phosphorus concentration increased, whereas the soil pH were not changed. In particular, the chemical properties were positively changed more with the application of 5.0% biochar. Thus, continuous management of the remediated soils with applying the eco-friendly agricultural materials can improve the quality of reme-diated soils.
By the turn of the century, our society has been gradually more interested in environmental problems than any other time. Ecological change spurred by industrial pollution is occurring beyond the borders of nations, and has emerged as a global issue. Such change is resulting in exhaustion of natural resources and energy, and serious climatic change. In this study, main focus regarding the process of the fashion product design system was placed on the sustainable fashion design of organic cotton as a positive and alternative suggestion. It is expected that the results of this study contribute to the fashion design planning not only for future generation but also for the present time. This study researched on brands that produced their fashion products using organic cotton. The following cases proved to possess sustainability in their product system. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: Firstly, sustainable design in organic cotton products has been a progressive ere-design in 2000s. It is mainly focus concerned with recycling and re-use of materials to protect environment. It is not chemical dependant and takes a particular care in eliminating waste water and energy in the dyeing process. It is an environmentally sustainable design better than all the other design processes. Secondly, it is a design that cares for the common good of society and the global system of fair trading. The fair trading of organic cotton products induced a change in the structure of production system, while defending human rights. It also gave benefits by promoting development in local society and progress in traditional skills. Not to mention that it contributed to building up the concept of transparency in the global economic system. Lastly, the brands emphasize their social responsibility and management ethics to observe environmental policy which is established to protect our nature and people. Their public information reminds customers of the importance of protecting the environment from diverse pollution. Moreover, they hold social events to promote public awareness for environmental Issues. This study dealt only with the organic cotton, a small subset of the subject of sustainable design. It can be extended and applied to various other sustainable fashion design as a solution for global environmental issues.

Thailand had issued a national strategic development master plan with issues related to water resources and water security in the entire water management. Water resources are an important factor of living and development of the country's socio-economy to be stable, prosperous and sustainable. Therefore, water management in both multidimensional and multi-sectoral systems is important and will supports socio-economic and environmental development. The direction of national development in accordance with the national strategic framework for 20 years that requires the country to level up security level in terms of water, energy and food. To response to the proposed goals, there is a subplan to increase water productivity of the entire water system for economical development use by evaluating use value and to create more value added from water use to meet international standard level. This study aims to evaluate the water productivity of Thailand in each basin and all sectors such as agricultural sector, service and industrial sectors by using the water use data from water account analysis and GDP data from NESDB during the past 10 years (1996-2015). The comparison of water productivity with other countries will also be conducted and in addition, the measures to improve water productivity in next 20 years will be explored to response to the National Strategic Master Plan goals. Water productivity is defined as output per unit of water depleted. The simplest way to compare water productivity across different enterprises is in monetary terms. World Bank presents water productivity as an indication of the efficiency by which each country uses its water resources. There are two data sets used for water productivity analyses, i.e., the first is water use data at end users and the second is Gross Domestic Product. The water use at end users are estimated by water account method based on the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting for Water (SEEA-Water) concept of United Nations. The water account shows the analyses of the water balance between the use and supply of each water resource in physical terms. The water supply and use linkage in the water account analyses separated into each phases, i.e., water sources, water managers, water service providers, water user at end user under water regulators of all kinds of water use activities such as household, industrial, agricultural, tourism, hydropower, and ecological conservation uses. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP), a well- known measuring method of the national economic growth is not actually a comprehensive approach to describe all aspects of national economic status, since GDP does not take into account the costs of the negative impacts to natural resources that result from the overexploitation of development projects, however, at present, integrating the environment with the economy of a country to measure its economic growth with GDP is acceptable worldwide. The study results will show the water use at each basin, use types at end users, water productivity in each sector from 1996-2015 compared with other countries, Besides the productivity improvement measures will be explored and proposed for the National Strategic Master Plan.
The effect of nutrient nitrogen on the degradation of pentachlorophenol (PCP) by Phanerochaete chrysosporium in a liquid culture was investigated. PCP disappeared at almost the same rate in both nutrient nitrogen-sufficient (NS) and -limited (NL) sttionary cultures. However, more pentachloroanisole (PCA) was accumulated in the NS culture than in the NL culture. The effect of nitrogen on the degradation of PCA was also tested in both cultures. PCA disappeared faster in the NL culture than in the NS culture, indicating that the lower accumulation of PCA during the degradation of PCP in the NL culture was due to the faster degradation of PCA in the NL culture than in the NS culture. In another experiment, PCA was added to shaking cultures rather than stationary cultures to search for any other metabolite(s). While no other metabolite but PCA was found in the NS stationary culture, 2,4,5,6-tetrachloro-2,5-cyclohexadiene-1,4-dione(TCHD) was found as the only indentifiable product in the NL shaking culture. Thus, PCP would appear to be metabolized to TCHD via PCa or directly oxidized to TCHD by lignin peroxidase. Since all the above results indicate that no innocuous metabolite was formed during the degradation of PCP by the fungus, it is quite feasible to use the fungus in the biotreatment of PCP.
Papenfussiella kuromo (PK) is a marine plant and an abundant ecological resource for the future; it is found in almost 80% of the terrestrial biosphere. The aim of this study was to investigate the antibacterial activity of PK against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), multidrug-resistant pathogen. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of PK hexane fraction (PKH) against 7 strains of MRSA ranged from 1.0 to 2.0 mg/mL. In the checkerboard dilution method, a synergistic effect of the PKH and the antibiotics (oxacillin and norfloxacin) was seen. PKH markedly reduced the MIC of each of the 4 antibiotics against MRSA. The time-kill assay showed that the synergistic activity of PKH and an antibiotic reduced the bacterial counts below the lowest detectable limit after 24 h. These findings suggest that PKH has antibacterial activity, and may be important baseline data in future extensive studies of living marine resources as a source of compounds active against MRSA.
A great many researches on affordance in HCI(Human Computer Interaction), product design, and cognitive science has been done investigated currently. In addition, the concept of affordances has been applied to games in the incremental trying to understand the relationship between gamers and systems. However, there are some problems to apply them to games because many researchers take ease to use, consistency, and usefulness to handle mainly in HCI rather than the property of the game into account. Consequently, the objective of the study is to investigate affordances in consideration of the features of the game, such as fantasy, variety, and fun based on the concept of them suggested in ecological psychology. A protocol analysis was conducted through the think-aloud method on the full gameplay session to platform action game as the basic genre of many game. The result of this research reveals that a static and movable affordances as a fixed state are discovered and transforming continously, appearing, and disappearing affordances as variable states are uncovered, and physical and cognitive affordances are observed. The result of this research is expected to propose the essential design guideline on the methodology of game design.
