The Factors Influencing Nursing Profession Perception of Nursing Student (간호대학생의 간호직 인식 영향요인)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing the nursing profession perception of nursing students. Methods: Data were collected with a questionnaire distributed to 305 nursing students in U city. Data were collected from March 30 to June 15, 2019. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS 22.0 program. Results: There were significant differences in the level of interpersonal trust (F=5.42, p<.001), empathy ability (F=3.13, p=.015), interpersonal relationship ability (F=3.64, p=.006) and nursing profession perception (F=11.95, p<.001) on the major satisfaction. The level of interpersonal trust (r=.21, p<.001), empathy ability (r=.27, p<.001) and interpersonal relationship ability (r=.28, p<.001) were positively correlated with nursing profession perception. Also empathy ability (r=.11, p=.047), interpersonal relationship ability (r=.49, p<.001) with interpersonal trust and correlation of empathy ability with interpersonal relationship ability (r=.32, p<.001) were positively correlated with each other. The significant variables that influence the nursing profession perception were grade, major satisfaction, empathy ability and interpersonal relationship ability. These factors were responsible for 21.3%. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that educational programs are necessary to raise the nursing perception of nursing students and reduce the turnover of nurses.

Convergence relationship of Self-esteem, Empathy ability and Interpersonal relationship ability in dental hygiene students (치위생과 학생들의 자아존중감과 공감능력, 대인관계능력과의 융합 관계)

  • This study was to investigate the convergence relationship of self-esteem, empathy ability and interpersonal relationship ability of 351 dental hygiene students in Jeollabuk-do area. The data were analyzed using SPSS software program 22.0. In case of interpersonal relationship ability, there were significantly different means with health state(p=0.005) and major satisfaction(p=0.004). Self-esteem, empathy ability and interpersonal relationship ability was positive correlated(r=0.600, p<0.01). The factors influencing interpersonal relationship ability were self-esteem and empathy ability(p<0.001). The explanatory power of the study was 38.0%. It is necessary to develop a dental hygiene education program for improving self-esteem, empathy ability and interpersonal relationship ability.

The Effect on Manifesting Group Creativity by Empathy Level of Students in the Elementary Science Class (초등 과학 수업에서 공감능력에 따른 집단 구성이 학생들의 집단 창의성 발현에 미치는 영향)

  • This study aimed to identify the effects of students' empathy ability on group creativity, when elementary school students perform scientific activity designed to express group creativity. A total of 12 elementary students from a fifth-grade science club participated in this study. A pretest to examine the students' empathic ability was performed to classify them into three groups: A group with high, low and heterogeneous empathic members. The linguistic interaction was analyzed to determine the process of group creativity manifestation; the results were classified into 'metacognitive', 'cognitive', and 'social-communicative'. As a result, groups with high empathic ability showed more frequent interaction in monitoring, planning, and divergent thinking. On the other hand, in the case of the group with low level of empathy, it was confirmed that there are many interactions related to regulation, convergent thinking, and noncohesive prosocial interaction. Also, in the case of heterogeneous group with empathy ability, group creativity utterance on all sides was relatively higher than other groups. As a result of this study, we could confirm the influence of empathy as a strategy to help the group creativity and discuss the educational implications.

Moderating Effects of Negative Emotionality on the Association Between Maternal Attitude Toward Children's Emotional Expression and Empathy Based on the Differential Susceptibility Model (차별적 민감성 모델에 기초한 어머니의 정서표현수용태도와 유아의 공감능력 간의 관계에서 부정적 정서성의 중재효과)

  • Objective: The purpose of this research was to examine the moderating effect of children's negative emotionality on the relationship between maternal attitude toward children's emotional expression based on the differential susceptibility model. Methods: Participants were 216 preschool children including 116 boys and 100 girls from day care centers and preschools located in Chungchung province and Seoul. EAS was used to measure the children's negative emotionality. The children's empathy quotient was used to measure empathy. Mothers reported their attitude toward children's emotional expression. Results: The results revealed that the association between empathy and maternal suppression of children's emotional expression was significant only for the children with high levels of negative emotionality. Moreover, the magnitude of association between empathy and maternal acceptance of children's emotional expression was greater for high levels of negative emotionality. Conclusion/Implications: It was concluded that these findings supported the differential susceptibility model.

The Influence of Academic Self-efficacy, Empathy and Communication Skills on Problem Solving Ability in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 학업적 자기효능감, 공감능력과 의사소통능력이 문제해결능력에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate factors affecting the problem solving ability of nursing students. Methods: The data in this study was collected through structured questionnaires from September 1st to October 30th, 2021. Study participants were 172 fourth grade nursing students at four departments of nursing located in B and K city. IBM SPSS WIN v 21.0. program with t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe' test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and hierarchical regression was used for data analysis. Results: The mean scores of academic self-efficacy was 3.88±051, empathy was 3.76±0.33, communication skills were 3.94±0.48, and problem solving ability was 3.70±0.40. There were significantly positive correlations between problem solving ability and academic self-efficacy (r=.45, p=<.001), empathy (r=.51, p=<.001), communication skills (r=.52, p=<.001), Factors affecting participants' problem solving ability were empathy (β=.31, p=<.001), and communication skills (β=.23, p=.006), which explained about 38.4% of the problem solving ability. Conclusion: In this study, it is necessary to develop curricular and non curricular nursing program that can strengthen empathy and good communication skills together when developing programs that increase problem solving ability.

The Influence of Psychiatric Nurses' Positive Psychological Capital, Empathy Ability and Stress Coping Style on Their Compassion Fatigue (정신과 병동 간호사의 긍정심리자본, 공감능력, 스트레스 대처방식이 공감피로에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effect of positive psychological capital, empathy ability, and stress coping style on psychiatric ward nurses' compassion fatigue. Methods: Data were collected using structured questionnaires for 140 psychiatric ward nurses. The data were analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, and hierarchical regression. Results: The variable predictors of compassion fatigue were as follows: positive psychological capital (β=-.35, p<.001), empathy ability (β=.32, p<.001), and passive coping (β=.25, p=.004). These factors explained 27% of compassion fatigue, and psychological capital was found to have the greatest influence among these variables. Conclusion: Positive psychological capital, empathy ability, and passive coping are important factors influencing nurses' compassion fatigue in psychiatric wards. It is necessary to develop interventions and appropriate coping styles that strengthen positive psychological capital to prevent and reduce nurses' compassion fatigue in psychiatric wards. In addition, it is necessary to identify the required level of empathy ability to maintain a therapeutic relationship.

Effects of job stress, resilience, and empathy on job satisfaction in firefighters (소방공무원의 직무스트레스, 회복탄력성, 공감능력이 직무만족도에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study attempted to identify job stress, resilience, and job satisfaction among firefighters and to identify factors that influence job satisfaction. Methods: The study was conducted among 150 active firefighters who agreed to participate after reading an explanation of the purpose and importance of the study. They were sent a link to the self-report questionnaire URL via text message. Results: The mean scores for the variables were 2.26 for job stress, 3.55 for resilience, 3.30 for empathy, and 3.23 for job satisfaction. There was a significant difference in job satisfaction based on age. Job satisfaction was significantly positively correlated with empathy (r=248, p=.002) and resilience (r=463, p<.001) and significantly negatively correlated with job stress (r= -.740, p<.001). In other words, higher resilience and empathy were associated with higher job satisfaction, while higher job stress was associated with lower job satisfaction. And job stress was the influencing factor of job satisfaction, with an explanatory power of 55%. Conclusion: To improve firefighters' job satisfaction, management programs should be developed to enhance resilience and empathy and specific measures should be taken to reduce job stress.

A Structural Analysis on Children's Pet Attachment, Empathy Ability and Prosociality (아동의 애완동물에 대한 애착과 공감능력 및 친사회성 간의 구조적 분석)

  • This study structurally analyzes the relations between children's pet attachment, empathy ability, and prosociality. The results are used to investigate the relations between pet attachment and empathy ability, which have recently emerged as important variables that affect children's prosociality. Data were collected about pet attachment, empathy ability, and prosociality from 209 elementary students in Daejeon who had experience with raising pets. SPSS 22.0 software was used for descriptive statistical analysis, correlation analysis, and reliability analysis, and AMOS 22.0 was used for confirmatory factor analysis and to examine the structural equation model. According to the analyses, children's pet attachment did not affect their prosociality but did influence their empathy ability. Children's empathy ability affected their prosociality and had a mediating effect on the relation between their pet attachment and prosociality. The results indicate that children's pet attachment and empathy ability are essential factors that influence prosociality. To improve prosociality, efforts should be made increase pet attachment and empathy ability. The study results can be used as a theoretical and practical fundamental basis for plans to improve children's pet attachment, empathy ability, and prosociality.

Predictors of Empathy for Nursing Students (간호대학생의 공감능력에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • The purpose of this study was to establish an intervention strategy for nursing students' empathic ability enhancement by confirming the degree of empathy ability of nursing students to confirm the relationship between empathy ability and diversity acceptance, emotion recognition clarity, and other person' s recognition. The subjects were 173 nursing students. Data were collected as a self-report questionnaire consisting of general characteristics, diversity acceptability, emotional clarity, other-awareness, and empathy. We carried out t-test, ANOVA, Scheff's test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression using IBM SPSS Statistics 19. The results show that there was a significant difference in empathy ability according to the general characteristics of the subjects according to academic year and practice experience, and empathy was statistically significant according to academic year, diversity acceptability, emotional clarity, and other-awareness. Factors influencing empathy ability of nursing students were academic year, diversity acceptability, emotional clarity and other-awareness, and these variables explained empathy ability as 51.9%. In order to improve empathy ability of nursing students based on these results, we should adopt a nursing education program that can accept subjects with various backgrounds and clearly recognize emotions in a therapeutic setting.

Cognitive and Emotional Empathy in Young Adolescents: an fMRI Study

  • Objectives: We investigated the differences in cognitive and emotional empathic ability between adolescents and adults, and the differences of the brain activation during cognitive and emotional empathy tasks. Methods: Adolescents (aged 13-15 years, n=14) and adults (aged 19-29 years, n=17) completed a range of empathic ability questionnaires and were scanned functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during both cognitive and emotional empathy task. Differences in empathic ability and brain activation between the groups were analyzed. Results: Both cognitive and emotional empathic ability were significantly lower in the adolescent compared to the adult group. Comparing the adolescent to the adult group showed that brain activation was significantly greater in the right transverse temporal gyrus (BA 41), right insula (BA 13), right superior parietal lobule (BA 7), right precentral gyrus (BA 4), and right thalamus whilst performing emotional empathy tasks. No brain regions showed significantly greater activation in the adolescent compared to the adult group while performing cognitive empathy task. In the adolescent group, scores of the Fantasy Subscale in the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, which reflects cognitive empathic ability, negatively correlated with activity of right superior parietal lobule during emotional empathic situations (r=-0.739, p=0.006). Conclusion: These results strongly suggest that adolescents possess lower cognitive and emotional empathic abilities than adults do and require compensatory hyperactivation of the brain regions associated with emotional empathy or embodiment in emotional empathic situation. Compensatory hyperactivation in the emotional empathy-related brain areas among adolescents are likely associated with their lower cognitive empathic ability.
