Test of Stokes-Einstein Formula for a Tracer in a Mesoscopic Solvent by Molecular Dynamics Simulation

  • In this work, the friction and diffusion coefficients of a tracer in a mesoscopic solvent are evaluated as a function of the tracer size by a hybrid molecular dynamics simulation where solute molecules evolve by Newton's equations of motion but the solvent evolves through the multi-particle collision dynamics. The friction coefficient is shown to scale linearly with the tracer size for larger tracers in accord with predictions of hydrodynamic theories. The diffusion coefficient of tracer is found to be inversely proportional to tracer size. The behavior of Stokes-Einstein formula is validated as a function of tracer size.

  • Planetary nebula in elliptical galaxies pose a problem in dark matter theory. Using data from the Planetary Nebula Spectrograph (PN. S), Romanowsky et al. (2003) reported that less dark matter than expected was found within 5 to 6 effective radii of three elliptical galaxies. We attempt to explain similar observations of elliptical galaxies with MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). We collect 16 elliptical galaxies with planetary nebulae from the public web data of PN. S. We investigate the dynamical behavior by analyzing the line-of-sight velocity dispersion in the framework of MOND.

실리콘 나노튜브에 관한 분자동력학 연구 (Molecular dynamics study of silicon nanotubes)

  • 본 연구에서는 분자동력학 방법을 사용하여 탄소 나노튜브와 같은 구조적 특성을 가정한 실리콘 나노튜브에 관한 연구를 수행하였다. 흑연판 모양의 실리콘 판에서 실리콘 나노튜브가 형성되는 활성화에너지는 매우 낮다는 것을 실리콘판 - 튜브 전이 에너지 도식도를 통하여 살펴보았다. 분자동력학 시뮬레이션 결과는 실리콘의 경우 단일벽 나노튜브가 불안정하며, 다중벽 나노튜브의 경우에 더욱 안정하다는 것을 원자결합수 및 결합각도 분포 비교를 통하여 보여주었다.

  • The Plate reformer consisting of combustion chamber and reforming chamber for 25 kW MCFC stack has been operated and computational fluid dynamics was applied to estimate reactions and thermal fluid behavior in the reformer. The methane air 2-stage reaction was assumed in the combustion chamber, and three step steam reforming reactions were included in the calculation. Flow uniformity, reaction rate and species distribution, and temperature distribution were analyzed. In particular, temperature distribution was compared with the measurements to show good agreement in the combustion chamber, however, inappropriate agreement in the reformer chamber

  • Since the sub-prime mortgage crisis from the US in 2008, the Korean housing market has plummeted. However, the deposit prices of the Korean local lease contract, Chonsei, had been increasing. This increase of Chonsei prices can be a threat to low-income people, most of whom prefer to live in houses with a Chonsei contract. In the housing and Chonsei market, there are many stakeholders with their own interest, hence, simple thoughts about housing and Chonsei market, such as more house supply, will decrease house price, would not work in a real complex housing market. In this research, we suggests system dynamics conceptual model which consists of causal-loop-diagrams for the Chonsei market as well as the housing market. In conclusion, the Chonsei price has its own homeostasis characteristics and different price behavior with housing price in the short and long term period. We found that unless government does not have a structural causation mind in implementing policies in the real estate market, the government may not attain their intended effectiveness on both markets.

Nonlinear dynamics of an adaptive energy harvester with magnetic interactions and magnetostrictive transduction

  • This work investigates the mechanical energy harvesting from smart and adaptive devices using magnetic interactions. The energy harvester is built from an elastic beam connected to an electric circuit by a magnetostrictive material that promotes energy transduction. Besides, magnetic interactions define the system stability characterizing multistable configurations. The adaptiveness is provided by magnets that can change their position with respect to the beam, changing the system configuration. A mathematical model is proposed considering a novel model to describe magnetic interactions based on the single-point magnet dipole method, but employing multiple points to represent the magnetic dipole, which is more effective to match experimental data. The adaptive behavior allows one to alter the system stability and therefore, its dynamical response. A nonlinear dynamics analysis is performed showing the possibilities to enhance energy harvesting capacity from the magnet position change. The strategy is to perform a system dynamical characterization and afterward, alter the energetic barrier according to the environmental energy sources. Results show interesting conditions where energy harvesting capacity is dramatically increased by changing the system characteristics.

Influence of Thermal Conductivity on the Thermal Behavior of Intermediate-Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

  • Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are among one of the promising technologies for efficient and clean energy. SOFCs offer several advantages over other types of fuel cells under relatively high temperatures (600℃ to 800℃). However, the thermal behavior of SOFC stacks at high operating temperatures is a serious issue in SOFC development because it can be associated with detrimental thermal stresses on the life span of the stacks. The thermal behavior of SOFC stacks can be influenced by operating or material properties. Therefore, this work aims to investigate the effects of the thermal conductivity of each component (anode, cathode, and electrolyte) on the thermal behavior of samarium-doped ceria-based SOFCs at intermediate temperatures. Computational fluid dynamics is used to simulate SOFC operation at 600℃. The temperature distributions and gradients of a single cell at 0.7 V under different thermal conductivity values are analyzed and discussed to determine their relationship. Simulations reveal that the influence of thermal conductivity is more remarkable for the anode and electrolyte than for the cathode. Increasing the thermal conductivity of the anode by 50% results in a 23% drop in the maximum thermal gradients. The results for the electrolyte are subtle, with a ~67% reduction in thermal conductivity that only results in an 8% reduction in the maximum temperature gradient. The effect of thermal conductivity on temperature gradient is important because it can be used to predict thermal stress generation.

초기 조건 변화에 따른 사출 운동체의 거동에 관한 수치적 연구 (Numerical Study about Behavior of an Ejecting Projectile for Varying Initial Conditions)

  • 본 연구에서는 전산유체역학과 6자유도 운동 해석을 결합하여 사출 조건 변화에 따른 공중 발사 운동체의 초기 거동에 관한 해석이 수행되었다. 해석 결과를 실험 측정 데이터와 비교함으로써 해석 기법의 정확성을 검증하였다. 다양한 사출 조건에 대한 사출 안정성 해석이 수행되었으며, 사출 운동체의 초기 거동에 지배적인 영향을 미치는 주요 인자로써 운동체의 무게, 전방 및 후방 사출력의 크기를 고려하였다. 이들 인자의 변화 범위에 대한 운동체의 사출 안정성 반응 곡면이 도출되었다. 모든 조건에서 후방 사출력이 작용하지 않는 경우에는 운동체의 안정 사출이 불가한 것으로 나타났다. 또한 운동체의 무게가 감소될수록 불안정 사출 영역이 확대되었다.

적층 구조물의 동적 거동에 관한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Study on the Dynamics of Piled Multi- Block Systems)

  • In this study, the shaking table tests of block systems on the rigid base have been performed to identify the seismic response and the dynamic behavior of the piled multi-block systems. To understand the characteristics of seismic response of piled multi-block systems, it is necessary to understand the dynamic behavior of single block system. Therefore, the skating table test of the single block system has been performed first. Moreover, by performing the shaking table tests of multi-block systems, the characteristics of dynamic behavior of piled multi-block systems have been analyzed. Also in this study, the distinct element method(DEM) has been used to analyze the nonlinear behavior of the piled multi-block systems. The results of the shaking table tests show that the response of the multi-block systems is very complicated. But by using DEM, the behavior of piled multi-block systems has been predicted and described well.

대학 졸업예정자들의 직업탐색활동의 변화와 개인적 특성의 영향에 관한 연구

  • Job search research has been criticized for failing to study the dynamics and change of the job search process. A lot of previous researches have used cross-sectional designs and treated job search as a static process. As a result, job search research has failed to examine how job seekers' behaviors change during the course of their search. This paper examined changes In job search behaviors(preparatory and active job search behavior, and job search intensity) and the effects of individual difference variables(self-esteem, self-efficacy, extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness) on job search behaviors. Data were gathered from 404 university students who had not found employment at the time of beginning of second semester The results of t-test pairs indicated that job seeking students increased their preparatory job search behavior and active job search behavior, but didn't job search intensity. The results of multiple regression showed that self-efficacy had strong relationship with preparatory and active job search behavior, and job search intensity, but self-esteem had not any relationship with them. Among big-5 personality, extroversion had relationship with active job search behavior and job search intensity, and agreeableness only with job search intensity.
