So far, geomorphologic dispersion due to the heterogeneity characteristics of flow paths in a basin has been demonstrated as a major factor affecting to the hydrologic response function of a catchment. This effect has considered by many previous studies taking into account flow path length factors, especially in the application of width function. Based upon the analysis of topographic index, another important geomorphologic factor extracted from DEM data, this work presents a new factor named saturation to evaluate its effects to the formation of the well-known instantaneous unit hydrograph (IUH) in Nash model and drainage structure in a river basin. First, the geomorphologic parameters corresponding to different saturation conditions are computed from DEM data with the support of GIS software. Then, in the combination of hydrologic and geomorphologic data, effective rainfall in each saturation degree and the Nash parameters are calculated using excel. Finally, the verification process with direct runoff data is conducted using Fortran programming. This process is applied to five sub-watersheds in Bocheong catchment ($485.21km^2$) in Korea where the necessary data are available and believable. The results from this approach will improve researchers and students'understandings about the relationship between rainfall and runoff and its relation with drainage structure within a catchment.

The objective of this study was to analyze the waste nutrient generation loads from hydroponics for three major crops in Gyeongsangnam-do. Study hydroponic farms were selected for the three major crops such as paprika, strawberry, tomato based on the agricultural statistics data and field investigation. The flow amount and water quality for inflow and outflow of study hydroponic farms were monitored and analyzed on a monthly basis. Monitored samples were analyzed in terms of DO, BOD, T-N, T-P, SS, and EC. The generated load of BOD, T-N, and T-P were calculated from the monitored flow and water quality. The monitoring results showed that the drainage ratio for the circular hydroponic farm was lower than the non-circular hydroponic farm because the outflow from the circular hydroponics were much lower than that from the non-circular. The generated load calculation results showed that the BOD tended to have a smaller value than the TMDLs guideline for land, while T-N and T-P showed higher value than that from the TMDLs guideline. In order to effectively manage the pollutant load discharged from the hydroponics farming complex, it is necessary to manage the non-circulating hydroponics farm. To improve water quality, it is necessary to gradually expand the circulating hydroponics farm through policy and economic support.
In disaster situations, to facilitate rapid drainage, electric underwater pumps are installed manually. This poses a high risk of electric shock accidents due to a short circuit, and a lot of time is required for hose connection and installation of electrical devices. To solve these problems, a Venturi pump using the venturi effect without external power is used. However, Venturi pumps that operate without external power make it difficult to install flow sensors such as electric devices; consequently, it is difficult to check the real-time flow rate. This paper proposes a flow estimation logic to replace the function of the flow sensor for the venturi pump . To develop the flow estimation logic, the flow characteristics of the venturi pump, according to the operating conditions, were checked. After that, the relationship with the flow rate of the venturi pump was defined using a pressure sensor corresponding to a low-cost sensor. Finally, an analysis of the estimation error was performed using the developed flow estimation logic.

Pigtail catheter drainage is a common procedure for the treatment of pleural effusion and pneumothorax. The most common complications of pigtail catheter insertion are pneumothorax, hemorrhage and chest pains. Cerebral air embolism is rare, but often fatal. In this paper, we report a case of cerebral air embolism in association with the insertion of a pigtail catheter for the drainage of a pleural effusion. A 67-year-old man is being presented with dyspnea, cough and right-side chest pains and was administered antibiotics for the treatment of pneumonia. The pneumonia failed to resolve and a loculated parapneumonic pleural effusion developed. A pigtail catheter was inserted in order to drain the pleural effusion, which resulted in cerebral air embolism. The patient was administered high-flow oxygen therapy and recovered without any neurologic complications.
Recently, typhoons or heavy rainfalls frequently occurred because of the effect of global warming, which caused serious damage such as landslide of mountain road, debris flow and uplift seepage pressure. Uplift seepage pressure induced on the pavement of mountain roads may cause serious pavement damage. It was known that subsurface drainage method is very effective to reduce uplift seepage pressure. Suitable permeability and stiffness of drainable base is very important to have the effectiveness of subsurface drainage. In this study, optimum particle size distribution of drainable base is investigate to meet the required permeability and bearing capacity of drainable base.

This study concerns the effect of drainage in reinforced soil on its stability during rainfall. A series of finite-element analysis based transient seepage analysis were performed on a number of cases with different drainage conditions in terms of layers of geotextiles installed in the reinforced zone. The results were then coupled with the limit-equilibrium slope stability analysis to investigate the variation of global stability factor of safety with rainfall infiltration into the reinforced wall. The results were thoroughly analyzed to get insight into the mechanism of pore water pressure reduction effect of the geotextile and into its effect on overall slope stability. It is shown that layers of geotextile installed in the reinforced zone can prevent decrease in suction in the reinforced zone during rainfall, thereby reducing potential risk of decreasing shear strength of the reinforced zone. Practical implications of the findings were discussed.

Pipe drainage is one of the effective slope protein works that can be adopted practically. As fine soil particles are suspended in percolating water, the strainer structure of under drain pipes in necessary to prevent the immediate clogging by soil suspension flow. This study deals with the effective strainer structure of under drain pipes for slope protection. The effective strainer structure of under pipes is the funneled strainer in which pore radius is enlarged toward flow direction. It is designed from the rheological properties of soil suspension flow which prevents the immediate clogging. Experimental results showed that the pipe drain discharge through the funneled strainers was larger than that through the constant pore radius strainers. This theorectial and experimental results indicate that the strainer with enlarged pore radius toward flow direction, is more effective than the strainer with constant pore radius.
The stationary dual-porosity model is not sufficient to describe the hydraulic characteristics of fractured aquifers as the groundwater flow in fractured aquifers is often controlled by the fractal geometry of fractures. This study deals with new stationary dual-porosity fractal model. This model simulates pseudo-steady state flow from matrix block to fissure in the fractal aquifer. Furthermore, it considers storage capacity and well loss effect at the production well. Type curves for different flow dimensions with different drainage factors are plotted. This new model has been applied to experimental data. The result of the interpretation shows a good accordance between the theoretical model and the observed data.

At downstream part of the hydraulic structures such as spiliway or drainage gate, jet flow can occur by gate opening. If stream bed is not hard or bed protection is not sufficient, scour hole will be formed due to high shear stress of the jet flow. We call this primary scour. Once the scour hole is formed, a vortex occurs in it and this vortex causes additional scour. We call this secondary scour. The primary scour proceeds to downstream together with flow direction but the secondary one proceeds to upstream direction opposite to it. If the secondary one continues and reaches to the hydraulic structure, it can undermine the bottom of hydraulic structure and this will lead to failure of structure itself. Thus, it is necessary to know the physical features of the vortex structure in a scour hole, which is the main mechanism of the secondary scour. This study deals with the characteristics of the vortex structure and its shear stress which causes the secondary scour.
A physically based model for rainfall runoff simulation in agricultural watershed equipped with tile drains is presented. This model is developed from the TOPMODEL which is based on the detailed topographic information provided by Digital Elevation Model (DEM). Nine possible flow generation scenarios in the tile drained basin are suggested and used in the development of the model. The model can identify the portions of the hydrograph resulting from tile flow, subsurface flow and surface flow. The performance of the model is assessed through a calibration and validation process. The results of the analysis show that the model describes the physical system well and provides a better insight into the hillslope hydrology of agricultural watersheds with tile drainage.
