  • In this paper, we have designed artificial double negative(DNG) transmission line composed of series inter-digital capacitor and two shunt inductive short stubs. This artificial DNG transmission line has the property of double positive (DPS) transmission line over some frequency ranges due to RF nature. In detail, this transmission line simultaneously has the contrary properties of DNG and DPS transmission line depending on operation frequency. DPS/DNG transmission line at leaky region is utilized to design frequency scanning antenna with backfire-to-endfire. We have simulated and measured the dispersion and for-field radiation beam patterns of symmetrical leaky wave antenna. The results show rough agreement.

  • Dynamic characteristics of tall building structures with double negative stiffness damped outriggers (2NSDO) are parametrically studied using the theoretical formula. Compared with one negative stiffness damped outrigger (1NSDO), 2NSDO can achieve a similar maximal modal damping ratio with a smaller negative stiffness ratio. Besides, the 2NSDO can improve the maximum achievable damping ratio to about 30% with less consumption of an outrigger damping coefficient compared with the double conventional damped outriggers (2CDO). Besides, the responses of structures with 2NSDO under fluctuating wind load are investigated by time-history analysis. Numerical results show that the 2NSDO is effective in reducing structural acceleration under fluctuating wind load, being more efficient than 1NSDO.

  • The propagation constant, which is defined for a double-positive (DPS) material of positive permittivity (${\varepsilon}'$) and permeability (${\mu}'$), is extended and derived for an epsilon-negative (ENG) material (${\varepsilon}'<0,\;{\mu}'>0$), a mu-negative (MNG) material (${\varepsilon}'>0,\;{\mu}'<0$), and a double-negative (DNG) material (${\varepsilon}'<0,\;{\mu}'<0$). By investigating how the permittivity loss (${\varepsilon}"$) and permeability loss (${\mu}"$) terms affect the propagation constant, we determine that the wave in the materials propagates as a right-handed (RH) triad or a left-handed (LH) triad. Regardless of the magnitudes of ${\varepsilon}"$ and ${\mu}"$, DPS and DNG materials become RH and LH media, respectively. However, ENG and MNG materials possess unusual characteristics that both materials become a RH medium when the sign of (${\varepsilon}'{\mu}"+{\varepsilon}"{\mu}'$) is positive and they become a LH medium when the sign is negative.

  • In this paper, a design methodology for the frequency-adaptive negative-delay circuit which can be implemented in standard CMOS memory process is proposed. The proposed negative-delay circuit which is a basic type of the analog SMD (synchronous mirror delay) measures the time difference between the input clock period and the target negative delay by utilizing analog behavior and repeats it in the next coming cycle. A new technology that compensates the auxiliary delay related with the output clock in the measure stage differentiates the Proposed method from the conventional method that compensates it in the delay-model stage which comes before the measure stage. A wider negative-delay range especially prominent in the high frequency performance than that in the conventional method can be realized through the proposed technology. In order to implement the wide locking range, a new frequency detector and the method for optimizing the bias condition of the analog circuit are suggested. An application example to the clocking circuits of a DDR SDRAM is simulated and demonstrated in a 0.6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ n-well double-poly double-metal CMOS technology.

  • Modal properties of guided waves along circular dispersive double negative (DNG) index metamaterial rod waveguides are numerically investigated. Identical forms of dispersive dielectric and magnetic material constants are used for simplicity. For degenerated azimuthally symmetric mode, a multimode region, a single mode region, a band gap region and a forbidden region are found which cannot be observed in the case of the conventional dielectric rod waveguide. As the normalized frequency goes down, discrete guided modes are continuously generated, which is a reverse property of conventional dielectric rod waveguide. Also, there are high-frequency cutoffs, which have been generally examined in dispersive circular geometries such as a plasma column or a plasma Goubau line. In the single mode region, both the low- and high-frequency cutoffs are existed where the propagation constants are continued between the guided oscillating and surface modes.

  • We compared various spectroscopic properties of a norfloxacin-single stranded DNA complex with those of norfloxacin-double stranded DNA complex. Norfloxacin binds to both double-and single stranded DNA, and we observed the following spectroscopic changes for both complexes: hypochromism in the norfloxacin absorption region in the absorption spectrum, the characteristic induced CD spectrum consisting of a weak positive band at 323 nm and a strong positive band at 280-300 nm followed by a negative band in the 260 nm region, a strong decrease in the fluorescence intensity and a red-shift in the fluorescence emission spectrum, and shorter fluorescence decay times. These results indicate that the environments of the bound norfloxacin in both DNAs are similar, although the equilibrium constant of the norfloxacin-single stranded DNA was twice as high as the norfloxacin-double stranded DNA complex. Both complexes were thermodynamically favored with similar negative Δ$G^o$. Negative Δ$H^o$ terms contribute to these spontaneous reactions; Δ$S^o$ term was unfavorable.

  • The Rotaviruses are members of the family Reoviridae and are the major cause of severe childhood gastroenteritis worldwide. Recently, electron microscopy has been used to detect non-group A rotaviruses to determine a relatively high resolution structure of the rotavirion. Mature, infectious virions(double-shelled particles) have a diameter of approximately 70nm, and have a capsid structure composed of two concentric protein layers. We have studied patient's stool specimen by negative staining technique complete removal of sucrose suspension. This negative staining technique that could be carried out in about 30 minutes and that could be used with crude stool specimen was an advantage of major significance. Removal of sucrose in the sample by has been completed washing with distilled of sucrose and by washing with distilled water. Ultrastructurally, typical feature of rotavirus has a double capsid construction with an inner capsid of 55nm and on outer 65-70nm diameter can be clearly demonstrated.

  • Background: In the thymus, developing thymocytes continually interact with thymic epithelial cell components. Self MHC restriction of mature T cells are imposed in the thymus through interaction of immature double positive thymocytes and thymic cortical epithelial cells. The site of negative selection, however, is a matter of debate. Through systemic injection of anti-TCR antibody or antigenic peptides, investigators suggested that most of the negative selection occurs in the thymic cortex. But the requirements for negative selection, i.e cellular counterparts and costimulatory molecules are more available in the medulla or cortico-medullary junction rather than in the thymic cortex. Methods: The direct and indirect pathways of thymocyte death after systemic anti-TCR antibody injection were separated through several experimental systems. B6 mice were either adrenalectomized or sham-adrenalectomized to evaluate the role of endogenous glucocorticoids from adrenal gland. Role of TNF were evaluated through using TNF receptor double knockout mice. Results: We found that without indirectly acting mediators such as $TNF-\alpha$ or corticosteroid, double positive thymocyte death were minimal by systemic injection of anti-TCR antibody in TNF receptor double knockout neonatal mice. Also by analyzing neonatal wild-type mice with adoptively transferred mature T cells, only peripheral activation of mature T cells could induce extensive double positive thymocyte death. Conclusion: Thus, systemically injected anti-TCR antibody mediated thymocyte death are mostly induced through indirect pathway.

  • Objective : To evaluate the clinical efficacy of adjuvant sertraline treatment in chronic schizophrenic patients, we carried out a double-blind, placebo controlled study. Method : Thirty six inpatients who fulfilled DSM-III-R criteria for chronic schizophrenia were randomly assigned to sertraline and placebo groups in a double-blinded fashion. A history of at least 2 years of illness and at least six months of hospitalization were prerequisities for inclusion in the study. Patients were received sertraline 50mg or placebo for 8 weeks in addition to their routine haloperidol regimen. Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), Clinical Global Impression(CGI), Simpson-Angus Scale(S-A) were evaluated at 5 points ; baseline, 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks of treatment. Results : The groups were controlled for age, gender, and length of illness. There were no significant differences in three PANSS factros(positive, negative, general), CGI, and S-A scale scores at any between sertaline and placebo treatment. Conclusion : This placebo controlled study showed no significant effects of sertraline on negative and positive symptoms in chronic schizophrenic patients.
