Genetic Polymorphisms of TCF7L2 Lack Influence on Risk of the Polycystic Ovary Syndrome - a Systemic Analysis

  • Background: The results of previous researches that analyzed the association between genetic polymorphisms of transcription factor-7-like 2 (TCF7L2, rs7903146) and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) were conflicting. Current systematic analysis was conducted to re-explore this association using updated materials. Materials and Methods: The PubMed database was used for data collection and the final search was conducted on January 3, 2014. For TCF7L2 rs7903146, a non-signficiant slight increase in risk of PCOS development was observed under three genetic models (dominant model: OR=1.06, 95%CI: 0.93-1.21, p>0.05; recessive model: OR=1.12, 95%CI: 0.87-1.43, p> 0.05; homozygous model: OR=1.14, 95%CI: 0.87-1.47, p>0.05). In the subgroup analyses in Asian group, allele susceptibility of PCOS was calculated (allele model: OR=1.00, 95%CI: 0.74-1.35, p>0.05; dominant model: OR=0.98, 95%CI: 0.71-1.35, p>0.05; recessive model: OR=1.79, 95%CI: 0.33-9.84, p>0.05; homozygous model: OR=1.78, 95%CI: 0.32-9.80, p>0.05), the differences were again not statistically significant. Conclusions: The findings of this systemic analysis suggest that the polymorphism of TCF7L2 rs7903146 may not be associated with the susceptibility to PCOS.

Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Mutations in Japanese Men with Lung Adenocarcinomas

  • Background: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations play a vital role in the prognosis of patients with lung adenocarcinoma. Such somatic mutations are more common in women who are non-smokers with adenocarcinoma and are of Asian origin. However, to our knowledge, there are few studies that have focused on men. Materials and Methods: One hundred and eighty-four consecutive patients (90 men and 94 women) of resected lung adenocarcinoma were studied retrospectively. Results: EGFR mutations were positive in 48.9% and negative (wild type) in 51.1%. Overall mutation was significant in women (66.0% vs. 32.2%) compared with men (p<0.001). For overall patients, EGFR mutation status was associated with gender, pStage, pT status, lepidic dominant histologic subtype, pure or mixed ground-glass nodule type on computed tomography and smoking status. However, in men, EGFR mutation status was only associated with lepidic dominant histologic subtype and not the other variables. Interestingly, the Brinkman index of men with mutant EGFR also did not differ from that for the wild type ($680.0{\pm}619.3$ vs. $813.1{\pm}552.1$ p=0.1077). Conclusions: The clinical characteristics of men with lung adenocarcinoma related to EGFR mutation are not always similar to that of overall patients. Especially we failed to find the relationship between EGFR mutations and smoking status in men.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze jeans market faced with economic difficulties to provide jean's maker with a large representative data base for jeans marketing strategy. This study surveyed jeans market and analyzed brand awareness. brand image and consumer's seeking image for 700 young adults. The 700 questionnaires were distributed at the five locations(Opkujung Shinchon Munjungdong, Shinrimdong '||'&'||' Suwon) and 656 reliable ones were used for statistical analysis. A. SAS statistical package including frequency table factor analysis. analysis of variance. and Duncan's multiple range test was used. The results are as follows : 1. Brand awareness involves "brand recall" based on asking a person to name recalled first and "brand rcognition" based on asking to identify brand name from 30 given brands. The result indicated that "Levis" was dominant for brand recall and Guess was dominant for brand recognition. 2. Regarding the brand image the result showed that "Vov" was best represented for sophisticated '||'&'||' trendy brand images "Storm" for characteristics brand image "Jambangee" for reasonable price '||'&'||' comfortable brand images and "Levis" for classic '||'&'||' design/color brand images. 3. As a result of factor analysis on consumer's seeking image six factors(characteristic/gay, intelligent/sexy, feminine/sophisticated , active/functional, cute/young, simple/comfortable) were found. Several factors had a relationship with demographic variables and preferred design. 4 Many young adults favored following design details ; low waist relaxed thigh with straight leg and long length up to the end of shoes. Also they preferred basic pocket to cargo pocket and simple logo accessories to metal ones.simple logo accessories to metal ones.

증례 보고 : Rieger syndrome (RIEGER SYNDROME : A CASE REPORT)

  • Rieger syndrome은 눈의 전안방 기형과 치아결손을 특징으로 하는 희귀한 유전질환으로 두개안면 이상과 체성기형을 동반하기도 한다. Rieger syndrome은 상염색체 우성유전(autosomal dominant inheritance)되며, 발생빈도는 약 200,000분의 1이고, Paired-like homeodomain transcription factor2(PITX2)의 변이가 이 질환과 연관이 있는 것으로 보고되고 있다. 본 증례는 Rieger syndrome으로 진단 받은 4세 7개월 된 여아에 대한 것으로, 양안에 다동공증과 후태생환을 보이고, 측모두부계측에서 상악골 열성장이 나타났으며, 상악유측절치와 더불어 다수의 영구치 결손이 방사선 상에서 관찰되었다. 이 증례를 통하여 Rieger syndrome 환아의 구강 및 두개안면의 소견을 관찰하고, 관련 문헌을 고찰하여 다소의 지견을 얻었기에 보고하는 바이다.

광주지역 산업단지 도장·인쇄시설의 휘발성유기화합물 배출 특성 평가 (Estimation and Analysis of VOCs Emissions from Painting and Printing Facilities in Industrial Complexes of Gwangju)

  • This study analyses the characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions from the painting and printing facilities, as well as ambient VOCs at industrial complexes in Gwangju. The major components of VOCs emissions from painting facilities were toluene, acetone, 2-butanone, ethyl acetate, ethyl benzene, o-xylene and m,p-xylene. The printing facilities mostly emitted ethyl acetate, 2-butanone, acetone and toluene. Aromatics (49.9%) and oxygenated VOCs (43.6%) were dominant in painting facilities, while oxygenated VOCs (92.7%) were the largest group in printing facilities. The total hydrocarbon concentration (THC) in printing facilities was approximately six times higher than in the painting facilities. The painting and printing facilities use many solvents. Their THC concentrations differed considerably depending on the type of prevention facilities. To reduce THC, it is necessary to improve the prevention facilities and operating conditions. The dominant species of ambient VOCs in industrial complexes were investigated with toluene, ethyl acetate, 2-butanone, ethyl benzene, m,p-xylene, butyl acetate, o-xylene, hexane and acetone. Factor analysis of ambient VOCs showed that the main sources of the VOCs were organic solvents used in painting, coating, and printing, as well as automobile emissions.

Hypoxia Inducible Factor-$1{\alpha}$ Directly Induces the Expression of Receptor Activator of Nuclear Factor-${\kappa}B$ Ligand in MLO-Y4 Osteocytes

  • Osteocytes may function as mechanotransducers by regulating local osteoclastogenesis. Reduced availability of oxygen, i.e. hypoxia, could occur during disuse, bone development, and fracture. Receptor activator of nuclear factor-${\kappa}B$ ligand (RANKL) is an osteoblast/stromal cell derived essential factor for osteoclastogenesis. The hypoxia induced osteoclastogenesis via increased RANKL expression in osteoblasts was demonstrated. Hypoxic regulation of gene expression generally involves activation of the hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) transcription pathway. In the present study, we investigated whether hypoxia regulates RANKL expression in murine osteocytes and HIF-$1{\alpha}$ mediates hypoxia-induced RANKL expression by transactivating RANKL promoter, to elucidate the role of osteocyte in osteoclastogenesis in the context of hypoxic condition. The expression levels of RANKL mRNA and protein, as well as hypoxia inducible factor-$1{\alpha}$ (HIF-$1{\alpha}$) protein, were significantly increased in hypoxic condition in MLO-Y4s. Constitutively active HIF-$1{\alpha}$ alone significantly increased the levels of RANKL expression in MLO-Y4s under normoxic conditions, whereas dominant negative HIF-$1{\alpha}$ blocked hypoxia-induced RANKL expression. To further explore to find if HIF-$1{\alpha}$ directly regulates RANKL transcription, a luciferase reporter assay was conducted. Hypoxia significantly increased RANKL promoter activity, whereas mutations of putative HIF-$1{\alpha}$ binding elements in RANKL promoter prevented this hypoxia-induced RANKL promoter activity in MLO-Y4s. These results suggest that HIF-$1{\alpha}$ mediates hypoxia-induced up-regulation of RANKL expression, and that in osteocytes of mechanically unloaded bone, hypoxia enhances osteoclastogenesis, at least in part, via an increased RANKL expression in osteocytes.

대마참나물(Tilingia tsusimensis (Yabe) Kitagawa) 개체군의 식생구조와 토양특성 (Vegetation Structure and Soil Properties of the Tilingia tsusimensis Population)

  • 금오산과 가야산 지역에 분포하는 대마참나물 개체군이 발견되었으며, 이 개체군의 생태학적 특성을 밝히기 위하여 식생구조와 토양을 분석하였다. 대마참나물 개체군은 대마참나물 전형 우점개체군과 자주꿩의다리 우점개체군으로 분류되었다. 대마참나물 개체군 분포 지역의 유기물 함량은 $25.0{\sim}32.3%$, 전질소 함량은 $0.83{\sim}1.04%$, 유효인산 함량은 $5.58{\sim}20.76ppm$, 양이온치환용량(CEC)은 $46.3{\sim}62.9$이고, 토양 PH는 $4.5{\sim}5.1$로 나타났다. 대마참나물 개체군과 환경 요인들과의 상관관계를 보면, 전형 우점개체군은 양료 중 치환성 K, Ca, Mg와 양이온치환용량이 다소 많고 해발고가 비교적 낮은 입지에 분포하고 있으며, 자주꿩의다리 우점개체군은 전형우점개체군보다 해발고가 다소 높고, 양료 중 치환성 K, Ca, Mg와 양이온치환용량이 다소 적은 입지에 분포하고 있었다.

캐릭터를 의류상품에 응용하기 위한 신세대 소비자 정보 분석 (Analysis of Young Adult Information Concentrating on the Significance of Application of Cartoon Characters on Garments)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a large representative data base for character goods marketing strategy. The study was to determine character name awareness in relation to segmented distribution regions and such demographic variables as sex and age. The author also analyzed preferred design. A total of 360 questionnaires were distributed and 359 reliable ones were used for statistical analysis. A SAS statistical package including frequency tables and Chi square test and factor analysis and Kendall′s relation analyses was used. The results are as follow : character name awareness involves "character name decognition" based on asking subjects to identify character names from 50 given names. "Tele-tubbies" was found to be a dominant commercial character name as a result of the recognition test, and "Sailer-moon" was found to be a dominant animation character goods as a result of the recognition test. Character recognition was significantly different in the segmented distribution legions, three age groups and different sex groups. People considered design first in purchasing any character goods, and they considered color second in purchasing them. The most favored part of garment far character to be stitch to was the center front in the T-shirt/dress shirt, the center back in the Jumper/jacket, back pocket in the trousers/skirt. The results of a Chi-square test showed that preferred part in the trousers/skirt of character was related with age variables.

Spring Dominant Copepods and Their Distribution Pattern in the Yellow Sea

  • We investigated the relationship between mesoscale spatial distribution of environmental parameters (temperature, salinity, and sigma-t), chlorophyll-a concentration and mesozooplankton in the Yellow Sea during May 1996, 1997, and 1998, with special reference to Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water (YSBCW). Adult calanoid copepods, Calanus sinicus, Paracalanus parvus s.l., Acartia omorii, and Centropages abdominalis were isolated by BVSTEP analysis based on the consistent explainable percentage (-32.3%) of the total mesozooplankton distributional pattern. The copepods, which accounted for 60 to 87% of the total abundances, occupied 73-78% of the copepod community. The YSBCW consistently remained in the northern part of the study area and influenced the spatial distribution of the calanoid copepods during the study periods. Abundances of C. sinicus and P. parvus s.l., which were high outside the YSBCW, were positively correlated with the whole water average temperature (p<0.01). In contrast, the abundances of C. abdominalis and A. omorii, which were relatively high in the YSBCW, were associated with the integrated chl-a concentration based on factor analysis. These results indicate that the YSBCW influenced the mesoscale spatial heterogeneity of average temperature and integrated chl-a concentration through the water column. This consequently affected the spatial distribution pattern of the dominant copepods in association with their respective preferences for environmental and biological parameters in the Yellow Sea during spring.

표면 습식 식각 및 열처리에 따른 GaN 단일 나노로드 소자의 전기적 특성변화 (The Electrical Properties of GaN Individual Nanorod Devices by Wet-etching of the Nanorod Surface and Annealing Treatment)

  • Even though nano-scale materials were very advantageous for various applications, there are still problems to be solved such as the stabilization of surface state and realization of low contact resistances between a semiconducting nanowire and electrodes in nano-electronics. It is well known that the effects of contacts barrier between nano-channel and metal electrodes were dominant in carrier transportation in individual nano-electronics. In this report, it was investigated the electrical properties of GaN nanorod devices after chemical etching and rapid thermal annealing for making good contacts. After KOH wet-etching of the contact area the devices showed better electrical performance compared with non-treated GaN individual devices but still didn't have linear voltage-current characteristics. The shape of voltage-current properties of GaN devices were improved remarkably after rapid thermal annealing as showing Ohmic behaviors with further bigger conductivities. Even though chemical etching of the nanorod surfaces could cause scattering of carriers, in here it was shown that the most important and dominant factor in carrier transport of nano-electronics was realization of low contact barrier between nano-channel and metal electrodes surely.
