High-voltage and low power consumption driver for an electronic paper

  • A custom-made display driver for an electronic paper is presented, which has high-voltage multilevel output capability and extremely low power consumption. An original level-shifter circuit can effectively reduce the power consumption and the chip area. This driver was implemented to a Quick-Response Liquid Powder Display (QR-LPD) and the image quality and power consumption was estimated.

  • System on Panel (SOP) can integrate many functions by Thin Film Transistor (TFT) circuits on an insulator substrate without using external driver LSIs. However, to make practical SOP has become more and more difficult because of rapid cost reduction of the driver LSIs. This paper will review the circuit design technology trend for SOP and introduce an example of a practical SOP, 2.0inch QVGA full color active matrix OLED with 8bit source driver.

  • 유기 박막 트랜지스터 (OTFT) 백플레인을 이용한 유연한 유기 발광 다이오드 (OLED) 디스플레이가 연구되고 있다. OLED 디스플레이의 구동을 위해서 게이트 드라이버가 필요하다. 저온, 저비용 및 대 면적 인쇄 프로세스를 사용하는 디스플레이 패널의 내장형 게이트 드라이버는 제조비용을 줄이고 모듈 구조를 단순화한다. 이 논문에서는 유연한 OLED 디스플레이 패널의 내장형 게이트 드라이버 제작을 위하여 OTFT를 사용한 의사 CMOS (pseudo complementary metal oxide semiconductor) 로직 게이트를 구현한다. 잉크젯 인쇄형 OTFT 및 디스플레이와 동일한 프로세스를 사용하여 유연한 플라스틱 기판 상에 의사 CMOS 로직 게이트가 설계 및 제작되며, 논리 게이트의 동작은 측정 실험에 의해 확인된다. 최대 1 kHz의 입력 신호 주파수에서 의사 CMOS 인버터의 동작 결과를 통하여 내장형 게이트 드라이버의 구현 가능성을 확인하였다.

  • As drivers spend more time in their cars, perception of driving a vehicle turns from utilizing a transportation means into residing in a personal space or even in moving office. Such a perception renders automobile manufacturers incorporate more vehicle functions, especially in-vehicle information systems As the number of system functions increases, the complexity of control and 2 types of display menus were designed after a literature review and a market analysis. With these controls and display menus, the experiment was performed to look into the difference of driver performance and preference on the integrated vehicle control type. Finally, the study suggests the integrated vehicle control type to minimize driver's cognitive load, and to use various functions efficiently. The study also discusses the practical use of the final integrated vehicle control type.

  • 본 논문은 차량 안전시스템을 위한 지능형 HUD 시스템의 특성을 고찰하였다. HUD 시스템은 차량에서 향상된 운전자 정보전달과 새로운 지능형 교통시스템을 제공한다. 자동차의 속도, 거리표시, 엔진 RPM, 내비게이션, 엔진 온도, 연료 게이지, 방향지시등, 경고 표시등에 대한 기본적인 정보를 운전자에게 전달한다. 본 논문에서 설계한 지능형 HUD 시스템은 TFT LCD, LCD 백라이트 LED, 평면 미러, 특수 제작된 렌즈 및 구동회로로 구성되었다. 본 논문은 운전자 안전성을 고려한 차량용 지능형 HUD 시스템을 제작, 분석하였다.

  • A simple sustain driver employing an energy recovery function is proposed as a highly efficient driver of a plasma display panel. The proposed driver uses dual resonance in the sustaining mode operation: a main resonance between an inductor and an external capacitor to produce alternative pulses and a sub-resonance between an inductor and a panel to recover the energy consumption by the capacitive displacement current of the PDP. The operational principle and design procedure of the proposed circuit are presented with theoretical analysis. The operation of the proposed sustain driver is verified through simulation and experiments based on a 7.5-inch-diagonal panel with a 200 KHz operating frequency.

  • We have developed a novel driving method, Six times Rate Driving(SRD) for the purpose of making cost competitive TFT-LCD. By applying SRD method to an a-Si TFT-LCD, the driving rate was increased six times as it was named but the number of data lines and so its D-Ics were reduced to one sixth of the conventional one which resulted in the cost saving of that much. We also newly designed the gate driver in order to avoid any expansion of the bezel width caused by applying SRD. Our newly developed driving technology, SRD was successfully applied to 7.0-inch WSVGA (1024 ${\times}$ 600) TFT-LCD which can be driven with only one data D-IC and here introduced.

A single-clock-driven gate driver using p-type, low-temperature polycrystalline silicon thin-film transistors

  • A single-clock-driven shift register and a two-stage buffer are proposed, using p-type, low-temperature polycrystalline silicon thin-film transistors. To eliminate the clock skew problems and to reduce the burden of the interface, only one clock signal was adopted to the shift register circuit, without additional reference voltages. A two-stage, p-type buffer was proposed to drive the gate line load and shows a full-swing output without threshold voltage loss. The shift register and buffer were designed for the 3.31" WVGA ($800{\times}480$) LCD panel, and the fabricated circuits were verified via simulations and measurements.

  • A new multi-level type energy recovery sustaining driver for AC PDP(Plasma Display Panel) is proposed in this paper. The multi-level driver has been developed to reduce the voltage stress on switching elements. Comparing the proposed driver with the conventional multi-level driver, 4 switching elements, 4 diodes, and two auxiliary capacitors are eliminated in the viewpoint of circuit structure. Moreover, the voltage stress on switching elements is more reduced and the sustain period is extended. To verify the validity of the proposed energy recovery circuit, computer simulations using PSpice program are carried out.
