  • Voltage-dependent transmittance characteristics associated with various cell parameters have been studied in-plane switching liquid crystal display when both common and pixel electrodes are transparent. When both electrodes are opaque, the transmittance is related to only the distance (I) between electrodes. However, where transparent electrode is used, it is influenced not only the 1but also an electrode width (w) and rubbing angle. In addition, these factors are related to operating voltage which shows maximal transmittance. To maximize the light efficiency of the cell and obtain low operating voltage, the above-mentioned cell parameters need to be optimized.

  • We report a cell gap variation tolerant liquid crystal display(LCD). Since the cell gap variation of the LCD results in the variation of brightness and contrast ratio, we should control carefully the process to get the uniform cell gap. For the projector application, this is more significant and the one reason of the low yield. We observed that the brightness variation of LCD is suppressed by insertion of dielectric layer between the pixel electrode and liquid crystal.

  • Inkjet printing is a typical printing technology with many advantages, such as material cost reduction, noncontact pattern formation without a mask, and process simplification. With the recent and rapid development of ink materials, parts and equipment, and process technologies related to inkjet printing, it is becoming a major process in various areas of the display industry. In particular, for the QD-OLED (quantum dot-organic light-emitting diode) display announced by Samsung Display in 2022, quantum dot pixel production by applying inkjet printing is a key technology. We analyze inkjet printing technology for mass production applied to the display industry and discuss the technology development trends in academia and industry toward the realization of next-generation displays.

  • Since the domestic introduction of iPhone in 2009, use of smartphones rapidly increased and many tasks, previously performed by various devices, are now performed by smartphones. In this process the importance of reading little text using small smartphone screen has become highly significant. This research tested how display factors of smartphone (pixel density, sub-pixel structure, luminance) and environmental factor (illumination) affect legibility related discomfort in text reading. The results indicated that legibility related discomfort is largely affected by pixel density, where people experience inconvenience when the pixel density becomes lower than 300 PPI. Illumination has limited effect on legibility related discomfort. Participants reported more legibility related discomfort when stimulus presented in various levels of illumination rather than single illumination level. Sub-pixel structure and luminance did not affected legibility related discomfort. Based on the results we suggest lower limit resolution of smart devices (smartphones, tablet computers) of different sizes for text legibility.

  • A method of improving device performance of OTFT was investigated. The mobility of device is more than 0.51 $cm^2$/Vs and $I_{on}/I_{off}$ is higher than $10^6$. An Active-matrix LCD driven by OTFT was fabricated. The resolution of this panel is 64 ${\times}$ 128 pixels and the pixel size is 550 ${\mu}m$ ${\times}$ 550 ${\mu}m$.

  • We have investigated the degradation mechanism of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a- Si:H) thin film transistors (TFTs) The threshold voltage of driving a-Si:H TFT is shifted severely by electrical bias due to a charge trapping and defect state creation. And the short channel TFTs exhibit less threshold voltage degradation than long channel TFTs. We propose the pixel circuits employing negative bias annealing scheme in order to suppression of threshold voltage shift of a-Si:H TFT.

  • A new liquid crystal display (LCD) Data identified Time Extension (DiTEX) driving scheme with a high charged voltage is proposed. The different charged voltage owing to the differential charging time and various initial pixel-potential can be eliminated or diminished under this method. It is compatible with a 2-row inversion and can be realized into the commercial dual-sided gate circuits.

  • We developed new circuit architecture for reducing the power consumption and chip-size of driver ICs. In this paper we describe a new drive scheme, based on the concept of time -sharing output and optimal circuit design based on color resolution. In case of 132 x 176-pixel class, we used only 8 O p-A mps for a 262-k color display.

  • In this paper, we try to make a systematic analysis for the vertical crosstalk on LCD driving. The vertical Crosstalk is one of the inevitable phenomena in the high-resolution TFT-LCDs. At first, the vortical Crosstalk is defined. Considering the structure of the pixels and data lines, a LCD (a pixel) is modeled electrically by its' equivalent circuit. The circuit is verified by experiment and used to find the cause of the vertical Crosstalk.
